The New Rebel Offensive: Russian Roulette (Dispatch 72)

For three weeks, the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, the capital of the so-called Donetsk Peoples Republic, has faced a near-constant barrage of deadly shellfire. Hundreds of civilians have been killed as the Ukrainian army slowly encircled Donetsk and pro-Russia forces fought for control of what is strategically the most important city.
With the Ukrainian army having made sweeping gains since late June, the rebels announced a counter offensive to relieve the siege of Donetsk and other cities under their control. On August 25, rebel forces brought over a number of armored vehicles and tanks from the Russian border on the southern coastline. They quickly made a push towards the coastal city of Mariupol, but were stopped at the town of Novoazovsk after a skirmish with Ukrainian troops and volunteer forces.
VICE News headed to Novoazovsk to investigate claims of Russian involvement, and found terrified civilians trapped in the shelling, along with desperate Ukrainian forces angry at their lack of reinforcement from their leaders in Kiev.

Do you really think all the ethnicities lived peacefully in the Soviet Union? Stalin, even as a Georgian, continued the same Russification practices that the Tsars used to maintain power. 1940 isn't even a generation after millions of Ukrainians starved to death and is largely the reason there are many ethnic Russians in the eastern part of the country. Open a fucking book, rube.

If they were peaceful they would more likely give them more autonomy but they tried rebel with force and tried to take other oblasts that are more ukrainian than russian.

This is very strange: while the whole world goes toward more and more mixing of different races and ethnicities, Russians and Ukrainians. whom no body can tell the difference, are killing each other as the certain circles in the West rejoicing a war among Slavs.

it was possible but Ukraine were convinced that if they allowed it Russia would influence the region even more and try to destabilise other regions after there success. I believe if Ukraine thought they were just fighting donbass people this would not have escalated so much. they would have got some sort of independence. but after crimea it's impossible to believe

It's frightening, really. I'm so used to seeing conflict news cover things in the Middle-East, where everything seems so different, almost alien. Then you see this, you see people very much like yourself, almost to the point it could be your own home town. I think that strikes it home, the eeriness that something like war occurs in something so close.

I really hope that the Ukrainian Army and Pro-Ukrainian militias push the rebels (and if any SOVIET communist soldiers) out of Ukraine! Also for those who say America needs to send troops, there is no reason for them to get involved with troops only with military and medical supplies. The European Union should be very concerned about this incident and aid the Ukrainians!!!

And captured russian troops? Tanks T-72 -the type Ukrainians did not have at all-so cant be captured ones. How would you explain me that? Were the rebels suddenly got tanks and more people? Even in areas clear of them -just right beside russian border, like Novoazov.

at the start there was a mix of russain troops and separatists. the longer the war progressed the higher percentage of russain troops became obvious as local separatists gave up or were killed. simply put Ukraine soldiers won the civil war but russain troops forced the war to continue. and we all know what the consequences are now

Tabak419 You could clearly tell that they were troops based on the fact that all of their equipment and uniforms were the same. The question was whether they are directly affiliated with the Russian Armed Forces or were they military for hire (like Blackwater). Putin didn't lie by saying that it's the local self-deference forces, because there were in fact many self-defense forces backing up the Russian troops. You'd have to give a much clearer question about the exact location and time of the said troops to receive a definitive answer. (I know, very cunning, but that's Putin's KGB style). But as for the rebels in eastern Ukraine, I haven't yet witnessed the same level of professionalism from them as from the troops in Crimea. The only Russian military that is present in Ukraine could be Russian military advisers, teaching the rebels war tactics, which seem to be working out quite well. As well as we've seen some evidence of Mr. Kadyrov's special forces, courtesy of Chechnya. But aside from that, if you say Russia's directly invading, show evidence, not theories.

Eastern Ukraine has minorities of ethnic russians while some regions have a russian majority that's not the case in most of them . Putins popularity was going down so to rile up the population Putin attacked Ukrainie and obviously Russia being a bigger nation won then annexed Crimea . Russian people liked the move made by Putin so his popularity went up again. Ukraine was also going more and more to the west which Russia seems to see a disaster because if Ukraine joins nato then they would loose it forever
