Hello Ladies & Gentlemen and as always, thank you for watching!! I hope my viewers are enjoying the new 4K videos!!! Today, we are called by the Missouri State Highway Patrol to extricate a semi truck with a loaded trailer that went off the road and became tangled in the barrier cable system. The cables work, but they do a lot of damage to everything they come in to contact with. We take our Peterbilt 389-X with a Miller Industries Century 1150R rotator towing and recovery unit, our Western Star Vulcan V70, our Peterbilt 337 Century 4024, and our Dodge traffic control truck to help untangle this beast. We show how we release the tension on the cable system WITHOUT cutting the cables. PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS AUTHORIZED AND TRAINED TO DO SO!!! We put the rotator in "unicorn" mode to start pulling the truck backwards. We have a few tricks up our sleeves. Also, I have one of my best friends, who is from Australia, who is visiting and gets to go on a ride-along to see how we do things on this side of the world. It was a difficult task with the air system ripped out from the truck and trailer, but we still manage to have a good time and get the job done safely and in a timely manner!!! I hope you all enjoy this video!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

I think it was really awesome how Michael comes from another country to visit and gets to help out. You could tell he was enjoying himself. All of Ron's crew is amazing, but hats off to Kenny. It is really nice to see an older gentleman who doesn't mind doing work like this. He is amazing at it, too.

My wife has family in MO and I totally misunderstood what these cables were designed to do. I'm from MI and we use barriers so seeing 'flimsy cables' keeping traffic apart seemed, almost, negligent. Now that I've seen how they're SUPPOSED to work it looks like a superior - and less expensive - method of keeping the 2 directions apart.

It's perhaps less interaction with the cables down the middle but more problematic for mowing.

States which use these report 80-100% reduction in cross-over fatalities. Cable barriers can also lessen severity of injuries in single car accidents, and you don't get that pinball effect of vehicles bouncing back and forth between solid barriers. On the downside, they're unforgiving to motorcycle riders.

@@JV-pu8kx Wonder if placement depends on whether or not the ground is solid enough to hold the rails in when something impacts the cable?

Happy Easter to you and yours Ron. Kenny proves again he is worth his weight in gold. That Yank-em rope may be expensive, but sure gets the job done and is easier to carry than a chain. It's why I always tell people: if you are traveling in Missouri and need a tow, call Midwest Truck, there is no one better. And, I say Missouri's law about tow trucks and sirens need to be extended to _all_ Second Responders, in _all_ fifty states and territories. Second Responder is a term that needs popularized. We all know what a First Responder is: police, fire, and medical. Second Responders include towing and recovery, DOT workers, and utility trouble (wo)men, the people needed to shut off electricity, gas, and water, to make things safer for the First Responders, victims, and bystanders. They are also the ones who clean up the messes so that addition lives may be saved: water, power, and communication restored to homes and businesses, and road blockages removed so the traffic can get moving, again, thus preventing secondary crashes, and get the economy moving again. I extend the Slow Down, Move Over, to _anyone_ on the side of the road, not just emergency vehicles with their lights flashing. Never needed a law to get me to do this: it was taught to me in Driver's Ed.

I really like the insight into the behind the scenes view, (audio and video) what goes into towing a damaged truck ... Very interesting ... Certainly not easier like towing a car, or light duty vehicle ... like they say 'You learn something new every day ' ... Wow! ... I still can't get over that box truck, that flew off the interstate, and the cab of that truck was badly OBLITERATED (looked to be a International cab - head first into a tree) ... I am glad to hear that driver only had minor injuries, considering the smount of damage!

Even big trucks have had rack and pinion steering for quite a while now. The first ones I encountered with it were Freightliner Cascadias but, I don't know if they were first to have it. I can really feel for Ethan while trying to turn that wheel though! I've never tried to steer a big truck without the power assist to the rack and, I'd never want to! I once had to drive a small car about 10 miles to my shop from a friends house without it and was about worn out by the time I got it there...that was with the engine running and the car drivable! I can't even imagine the effort needed to turn the wheel in this situation! It's not anywhere near as easy as it was with the old "recirculating ball" steering. I drove an old Chevy that was supposed to have power steering but didn't (the pump was bad so the belt was removed) for 3 or 4 years and, it wasn't that bad at all compared to that little Dodge that my friend had.

Watching the steering wheel trying to be moved left or right brought me back a long time ago. My parents had a 1973 chevelle dad didn’t believe in power steering and had to use that vehicle to take my drivers test. The 3 point turn was trying. Passed my first time. When the officer told me I passed was told deserved a truck license for making thru the test. That was a long time ago I’m 65 now. Enjoy watching your team. Have a blessed easter and stay safe

Another fine example of the team working together. I was amused by the different understandings of "driver's side", especially as I'm with Michael on this one. I did notice that as you were walking towards the Western Star at about 11:50 that it did not seem to be particularly visible - maybe some hi-vis material on the under-reach would help.
@Underscore11
@Underscore11 Жыл бұрын
It's not just the Western Star - though I agree it's particularly bad without the hi-vis on the underreach like the 2 Petes. I think the big problem is none of the 3 heavies have any code lighting on the rear aside from the lightbars on top of the cab. The rotator at least has 2 of those amber strobes (and iirc mini pete has something similar), but it looks like the WS doesn't have anything. Even just 2 code lights would help a lot I imagine, though I image that would be a ton of work and there might not necessarily be the correct wiring there.

That was legit force of habit for me. I even had a giggle at it when Ethan said to me "other drivers side Michael" 😂

That was a great team effort, very ably assisted by Michael. Obviously knows his stuff (not surprising when one learns that he works for a large outfit back home). As a Brit, I might also have made the same mistake of going to the right-hand side 'driver's side' in sipte of knowing that you Americans drive on the 'wrong' side of the road in vehicles configured the 'wrong way' round!! 😄😄 The job needed plenty of 'hands to the pumps'. Well done, all. God bless.
