Living in the PNW with these massive trees around you don’t cut corners even IF you underbid. The damage these trees will do is life shattering. To customers and tree cutters. Always do the right thing. Reg and August in Grants Pass, Oregon that I’ve found are true pros’. I know there are many unsung on YT. I’m glad YT showed me Reg.

As a potential customer in your area, I got to say this vid gives you a major advantage over others. You got the job done safely, and I wouldn't expect the price to remain the same if the job turned out to be much more difficult than originally estimated.

Nice job dude! You're only stupid if you make that same estimate mistake again on another tree. Meanwhile you didn't make any mistakes and crush a house or worse. The vast majority of people have no idea what it's like to take down a big tree in small quarters; the liability alone... not to mention the personal danger. You're a freakin' artist. God bless you and keep you.

Amazing video . . . good for all to watch and hear. Most customers have NO idea of what you all are dealing with especially on a job of this scale . . . you are seasoned professionals doing immensely dangerous work and risking your lives every day . . . there is great value in your work and you should be very well compensated. It's disappointing to see low-ball bids but those often don't turn out well. My husband has been called in to "fix" the mess started by a tree hack that walked away because he got in over his head. Thanks so much for your courage and for sharing your knowledge and experience . . . what a gift to those in the industry (and to those of us who are in a supportive role).

Reg; the part I enjoyed the most about this video is the way you stood by your word and took care of the customer. You got caught by surprise not bid low planning on doing only half a job and sticking the customer. To me that shines. am nobody important but I am very proud of what you did.

marvin ostman : I don't know how they charge the customer, but that tree I'd have to charge by the weight and clean-up. That was so rotten you wouldn't be able to burn it.

Yes very true but in situations where the tree job must change due to unseen circumstances the climber/cutter has every right to stop at that point and re-evaluate a proper price that will make the job worth doing and if the customer say's no way then I would stop work at that point and call it quits even if it means not getting paid for the work already done, this is the reason that open contracts on trees that have unknown problems or problems one cannot see from the ground. I would of bid way high and made sure that I could do the tree for that price regardless of what method would be used as in 10' sections or 3' sections either way $5700.-$6500. would of been an appropriate price for that tree is it was here in Santa Cruz County California 95018.

ProTrees, generally when running a business it pays a lot to keep a good reputation, since a lot of work will come from recommendations. I used to know the stat but can't remember now but in terms of revenue it's worth a lot. People who do bad jobs will make money quick at the start but will have no longevity.

This is really the only way to carry yourself if you want to have good name. A deal's a deal- simple as that. This is my kind of video. No manufactured drama, no ego/rockstar nonsense, and I got to watch another professional go about his business. Ultimately, it's still a win for you because no one got hurt, you learned a little something from the whole ordeal, and you're still making a living problem solving people's tree issues. Thanks for the vid, brother!

I understand totally what you're saying about industry standards and all that but for those new to the game and those still learning don't we have to start from well formed basics based on the physics and maths of the job at hand , the ability to change the dynamics of the job only comes from the experience and longevity spent in the tree industry and therefore makes people like yourself a wealth of knowledge and I for one am constantly picking up stuff from watching your videos even though I've been at it for over 15 years myself , every day's a school day , keep them coming and stay safe .

My father always cut dangerous rotted trees on days no one else would touch them. In high wind. Big gusts. He could read the strength of them somehow during high wind. Provided a couple exceptions when GOD had his hand on him he dropped them on a 'dime" . A couple did come down like crumbling blocks but he was never injured. I err on the side of caution myself. Great video and commentary. This is a reality check for all levels of tree fellers. I have been doing tree work, on the side, for 40 years and generally work alone except for bigger trees. Never this big. I am not in your league. I always give a fair price and if someone under cuts me I walk. Of course I can do this because it is not my main source of income. I have also under bid jobs and look at is as a learning experience. I've always considered a tree core sampling tool. I used this tool in college when aging trees. I think such a device would have been beneficial in detecting any rot at the base of this tree and further up if rot was suspected. How ever doing a full inspection would be time consuming and may not have been cost effective for giving a quote unless you were to be paid for doing a full inspection. Thanks again for sharing your experience. Be safe.

Not sure Merle has seen this yet - sent him a link. My humble thoughts (being only an arborists' wife ; ) . . . seems a fair amount of bids are like this - not knowing all the 'facts' until you're in the tree and cutting. Merle bids jobs (not an estimate) and takes the hit if he underbids. What about bidding jobs on the scale of this one differently? Pointing out the danger factors (high power lines, etc.) and the unknowns (rot in the tree). In cases like this where there are many factors to consider or a client has a tendency to do "add-ons" when you're in the tree, Merle will sometimes bid the work on an hourly basis. Of course, you must have a good reputation and built trust with customers for this to fly. I added a caveat to our contracts/invoices (for some jobs/new customers, etc.) that states: "PLEASE NOTE: A Change Order is required for any deviation from the original agreement." I did this because of feedback from the field ; ) You guys are doing dangerous work on a scale only seasoned professionals can handle . . . that has immense value . . . you should be compensated for all of the factors that go into doing work of this scale . . .

You reenforce your knowledge from success. You learn from mistakes. It is 1000 times easier to show your succeses than admiting a mistake. Move on and strive for succes. Good video!

Thanks for posting, Reg. I appreciated seeing the diagram before the work and the real-life scenario you presented. Much more helpful than a music video where someone drops a perfect tree. Thanks again.

Samuel Nekvasil : That was also educational. You're definitely right. I liked the tree in the diagram.😀😃😉

Great attitude to have and a very professional outlook! Informative video. As the previous guy said its a shame most other trades can go to the customer and say the job has developed into something more. Im sure, you will always have work and 95% of the time you will win and you get repeat custom. Cheers.

Great video...I think you made the right call by coming back the next day fresh. I run a service in Florida and I do all my own climbing and I know that feeling of being dead tired with only 30-45 min to go...it's just not worth it in the end though. Great job on that basterd of of a tree job. I can't believe you chunked that damn thing down that far piece by piece. Keep trucking mate

I’m a little late subscribing to your channel but as I’m finding out who the best of the best are in this business that I am a newcomer to I’m realizing I’m gaining so much respect for the integrity in our hearts that is our problem we are over achievers in we won’t ever let anybody else win✊✊✊✊✊ I want to say thank you very much for all the time that you have put into the videos and sometimes it’s better just to walk away the stress is what is killing all of us LOL LOL God bless

I'm not a tree climber or anything -- but when I bid the work I do I always try and figure out a fair price that makes sense and then double it. Nice to have a little insurance policy just in case. Great video. Full of life's lessons learned.

This was a really good video and explained well. The explanation at the end with examples was really good, I think most people will understand now. We all mess up on estimates/bids, best you can do is still not cut corners and just do a good job; like you did.

thexmanjdd kzfaq.info/get/bejne/atieqNl22LDQl6M.html not deleted, just unlisted. That was aimed at tree men and other such trades people. Not for my customers. I wouldn't be selling my services very well with such a down beat presentation.

Love it mate! Especially when you enlisted the help of a Steinlager Pure to demonstrate the relative merits of face cut depths and centre of gravity. The take home message is after an underbid and overdelivered job the beer should always go down ice cold.
