Living in the PNW with these massive trees around you don’t cut corners even IF you underbid. The damage these trees will do is life shattering. To customers and tree cutters. Always do the right thing. Reg and August in Grants Pass, Oregon that I’ve found are true pros’. I know there are many unsung on YT. I’m glad YT showed me Reg.

As a potential customer in your area, I got to say this vid gives you a major advantage over others. You got the job done safely, and I wouldn't expect the price to remain the same if the job turned out to be much more difficult than originally estimated.

Nice job dude! You're only stupid if you make that same estimate mistake again on another tree. Meanwhile you didn't make any mistakes and crush a house or worse. The vast majority of people have no idea what it's like to take down a big tree in small quarters; the liability alone... not to mention the personal danger. You're a freakin' artist. God bless you and keep you.

Amazing video . . . good for all to watch and hear. Most customers have NO idea of what you all are dealing with especially on a job of this scale . . . you are seasoned professionals doing immensely dangerous work and risking your lives every day . . . there is great value in your work and you should be very well compensated. It's disappointing to see low-ball bids but those often don't turn out well. My husband has been called in to "fix" the mess started by a tree hack that walked away because he got in over his head. Thanks so much for your courage and for sharing your knowledge and experience . . . what a gift to those in the industry (and to those of us who are in a supportive role).

Reg; the part I enjoyed the most about this video is the way you stood by your word and took care of the customer. You got caught by surprise not bid low planning on doing only half a job and sticking the customer. To me that shines. am nobody important but I am very proud of what you did.
@briantruckinglanders63757 жыл бұрын
marvin ostman : I don't know how they charge the customer, but that tree I'd have to charge by the weight and clean-up. That was so rotten you wouldn't be able to burn it.
@martiwoodchip45186 жыл бұрын
Yes very true but in situations where the tree job must change due to unseen circumstances the climber/cutter has every right to stop at that point and re-evaluate a proper price that will make the job worth doing and if the customer say's no way then I would stop work at that point and call it quits even if it means not getting paid for the work already done, this is the reason that open contracts on trees that have unknown problems or problems one cannot see from the ground. I would of bid way high and made sure that I could do the tree for that price regardless of what method would be used as in 10' sections or 3' sections either way $5700.-$6500. would of been an appropriate price for that tree is it was here in Santa Cruz County California 95018.

ProTrees, generally when running a business it pays a lot to keep a good reputation, since a lot of work will come from recommendations. I used to know the stat but can't remember now but in terms of revenue it's worth a lot. People who do bad jobs will make money quick at the start but will have no longevity.

Great video and commentary. This is a reality check for all levels of tree fellers. I have been doing tree work, on the side, for 40 years and generally work alone except for bigger trees. Never this big. I am not in your league. I always give a fair price and if someone under cuts me I walk. Of course I can do this because it is not my main source of income. I have also under bid jobs and look at is as a learning experience. I've always considered a tree core sampling tool. I used this tool in college when aging trees. I think such a device would have been beneficial in detecting any rot at the base of this tree and further up if rot was suspected. How ever doing a full inspection would be time consuming and may not have been cost effective for giving a quote unless you were to be paid for doing a full inspection. Thanks again for sharing your experience. Be safe.

Not sure Merle has seen this yet - sent him a link. My humble thoughts (being only an arborists' wife ; ) . . . seems a fair amount of bids are like this - not knowing all the 'facts' until you're in the tree and cutting. Merle bids jobs (not an estimate) and takes the hit if he underbids. What about bidding jobs on the scale of this one differently? Pointing out the danger factors (high power lines, etc.) and the unknowns (rot in the tree). In cases like this where there are many factors to consider or a client has a tendency to do "add-ons" when you're in the tree, Merle will sometimes bid the work on an hourly basis. Of course, you must have a good reputation and built trust with customers for this to fly. I added a caveat to our contracts/invoices (for some jobs/new customers, etc.) that states: "PLEASE NOTE: A Change Order is required for any deviation from the original agreement." I did this because of feedback from the field ; ) You guys are doing dangerous work on a scale only seasoned professionals can handle . . . that has immense value . . . you should be compensated for all of the factors that go into doing work of this scale . . .
