As a Spanish teacher to thousands of online students, I hear a lot of people asking: How do I overcome nervousness and speak confidently in Spanish? Even if you know a ton of vocabulary and have studied grammar, the truth is that speaking won't come naturally until you follow this simple progression that will ease you into having conversations with natives. Even if this idea seems scary now, trust the process and know that I have seen hundreds of students overcome their difficulties speaking Spanish in the real world and go on to have amazing conversations. Follow these simple steps to speak confidently in Spanish, then test your skills with a short conversation practice with me at the end! Thank you for watching, you're awesome :) New videos every Saturday.
👋 Hola, I'm Nate. I used to not know any Spanish at all, and I had no interest in learning the language. I thought learning Spanish would be boring, a waste of time, and would provide no value to my life. Then I started taking Spanish classes in high school and everything changed for me. I struggled with learning the language a lot at first, but thanks to my teachers and my Spanish speaking friends, they helped make the learning process fun. Within a few months, I had gotten to a conversational level, but more important, I had become a more confident person. The real win for me, though, was the friendships I made and strengthened. I discovered that not only did I have higher self esteem, but being out in the real world with people, whether old friends or new ones I met, made me feel more alive and connected with the world around me. Now it's my goal to create videos that make you smile and inspire you to learn Spanish or another language!

I have literally the exact opposite problem. I can speak very well in Spanish but understanding what people say is by far the hardest part of the language for me.

Then you just have to apply the exact same opposite advice: listen Spanish as much as possible ; depending your goals maybe you would, at least at first, focus on one kind of accent, it would help you For example for Mexican Spanish or Spain's one, you can watch the channel "easy Spanish" with native subtitles and English one ; try to listen some music and read along with lyrics ; watch some kid show, don't be ashamed, they speak - in general - a bit more slower, but specifically more clearly Good luck amigo

Same for me. I was honestly surprised to find out that most people have the opposite problem. I almost would rather be able to understand than speak - it gives the natives the false impression that I know the language better than I actually do lol.

Same, I haven't really had any problem with native speakers understanding me, but I cant understand nothing. Understanding is more important then speaking imo. I listen to content on average of 2 hours a day, but I don't see much improvement. Im working on more vocabulary and grammer now, hopefully that helps. If you think about it learning 5 words a day is only like 1700 words in a year and basic conversations I read use something like 3k-7k words. The average native speaker of any language knows around 30k (depending on language and education)

I too have developed a great accent and joy to speak (vocab is still growing) but understanding can be challenging if I’m speaking to someone who’s less formal and more fast

0:53 - 1:06 was spot on. It’s nerve wrecking to talk to a native speaker. Especially when you say something and they start rambling off at 100 words per second 😂

I'm so lucky to work with spanish speakers at my job in construction, it really helps with my listening trying to understand their conversations in spanish (I can't help but eavesdrop 😂). I even speak with them sometimes and it always puts a smile on their face when I speak to them with a good accent because I'm the only gringo on the job site that speaks in their native language

My issue is confidence. English is all I know but, I still rarely speak unless spoken to. I feel as if I need to know everything there is to know, about a given topic or to not even bother speaking. That's my brain. Maybe some day I'll break that chain and begin speaking. ¡Gracias por tu vídeo Nate!

The gym analogy is definitely one I've told friends of mine who are starting up learning Spanish. You need to start speaking publicly to "get your reps in, " my advice is just start using the most simplest words/phrases publicly you can until it becomes easy and you don't judge yourself. Then it will branch off from there, slow progression. Of course I do understand the big problem for people is not knowing people that you see on the regular who speak and don't mind speaking.
