There's one downside to getting your accent out ahead of your actual comprehension and speaking ability -- native speakers will hear you and assume your Spanish is _way_ better than it actually is.

Thanks for that pretty simple rule of thumb. In other words (latín) : In dubio pro subjunctivo.

Another false friend is "borracheiro", which has nothing to do with drunkenness. In Brazil I saw an article about um borracheiro cego: a blind tire changer. I use "sotaque" in Latin, as "sautāx, sautācis".

Telling someone to study only the subjunctive mood in Spanish is just as stupid as saying that it's best to learn ONLY the preterite form of verbs, rather than also the imperfect forms. Some things absolutely can't be communicated unless the proper verb form is used. Try saying THIS in Spanish without using the subjunctive - "I want you to do this for me." A direct translation: It can't be done without the subjunctive. "Quiero que me hagas esto." Yes, that's a direct translation - Hey, and even if native speakers will still understand you when you don't use the subjunctive, well ... it's not good for your ongoing learning simply because you'd actually be practicing an incorrect form, and then your brain would need to learn how to shift gears again when you actually DO comprehend the subjunctive mood more deeply. It's also used in English, although perhaps not as often. But here's a memorable sample in English - A song from a movie, and the lyrics are as follows: "If I were a rich man ... " The word "were" is used in the subjunctive form because you're expressing something which is contrary to fact - You're actually NOT rich. I was a Spanish teacher. I lived in Argentina. I have a university degree. I know damn well what I'm talking about. And the BEST advice anyone can get is to actually LEARN the subjunctive mood deeply ... and then actually use it in your speech when the situation demands.

Depending on what is said, yes ... a Spanish speaker can sometimes understand Italian, or at least get the general idea of what is said. I speak as someone who knows Spanish fluently, but knows virtually NO Italian, and that's been my very limited experience with Italian.

Correction on the US comment that you made about we calling ourselves boricuas was before the US invasion dude boricuas were the natives before the Spanish invasion too just keep that in mind lets not try to put these politics and these personal views on the history of our Island please. We are boricuas and still are boricuas doesn't matter who invaded or came first.

Fun fact, we also have a subjunctive in English, "It's important that he study", and study is not conjugated. idk if that helps. Also drilling type 2/3 conditionals might help.

It's quite astounding to see how Americans feel so much pride in speaking two languages, here in India people generally on average speak around 3-4 languages but here nobody cares sadly ...

This focus on speaking a lot to learn a language is so misguided. Speaking in and of itself does NOTHING to teach you anything. However LISTENING to the responses does teach you. You don't learn a language by speaking it. You need to listen and read ALOT. And then a small amount of speaking practice to train your mouth to move the muscles to produce the sounds correctly.

I don't reckon my personality changes depending on the language I happen to be speaking at any given moment. I lived in Germany for 10 years and fitted right in from day 1 probably because, although I'm Scottish, I just seem to have many things in common with Germans. I currently live in Spain and don't find the people that much different and seem to get along with the same old personality.

I'm Swedish and during our English language year in England, UK we were also taught Latin, which helps a lot when trying to learn Spanish. My Spanish host family friend taught me some Spanish and the other Spanish speaking language students, they were from Colombia, Spain, Mexico etc. And when I worked in London in a hostel the majority of the guests were from Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries, so we tried to learn the check in procedure in Spanish, Portuguese, French and Italian. I still try and practice
