I think some of you need this too much, so here it is! Before applying cases, you need to understand them, and understand them well.

A direct object is direct because it doesn't require a preposition (I read a book). An indirect object needs a preposition (I'm looking for a book). Another way of looking at it: to "get" to an indirect object, you have to go through a preposition first. I hope this helps. Great video!

What about: I gave my brother a book. Isn't brother an indirect object. (Я дал брату книгу. Is this correct?
@edwarda.casimiro9808
@edwarda.casimiro9808 6 жыл бұрын
You are correct. Another way of saying it is "I gave a book to my brother." "Book" is a direct object (no preposition), and "brother" is an indirect object (preposition). So брат is in the dative case, and книга is in the accusative.

Edward A. Casimiro Thanks for the extra help here. For me, grammar in my native language is more intuitive and so I struggle with these principles. I'm quite late to these lessons but hopefully not too late to ask... What about "I'm writing in a book"? I think 'in' is a preposition here, so does this mean that this sentence has no direct object, only an indirect one?

@@Balazak The sentence 'I am writing in a book' has neither direct nor indirect object. It does not say what you are writing and it does not say to whom you are goint to show what you are writing. It will help if we extend the sentence to read "I will show to you the poem that I wrote in this book'. What am I going to show? -The poem. This is the direct object; it answers to the question what? To whom am I going to show the poem? To you; this is the indirect object. Where the poem has been written? In a book; this is a specification of place, and various languages express it in a different way.
@evangelosgeronicolas2385

In the proposition 'I am looking for a book' we have to ask what describes the verbal acitivity. The verb is 'to look for'. Some prepositions are used to describe the verbal activity and they function as adverbs. E.g., in 'I look at you'. 'you is a direct object because the complete verbal expression is 'to look at'. Similarly, in 'I am looking for a book', preposition 'for' specifies the meaning of the verbal activity. If we ask: What am I looking for? the answer is 'a book'. Therefore, the word book is the direct object of the verbal activitiy 'I am looking for'. Now, if I were to say: 'I am looking for a book for you', in this case the 'you' stands for the indirect object of 'I am looking for'.

Here are my answers. I will also try to explain my reasoning, so this comment might be a bit long, sorry about that. 1) MOM - Nom (She is the subject), SOUP - Acc (Direct action of making the soup), SALT - Inst (Salt is the tool being used to make soup) 2) I - Nom (I am the subject), CAKE - Acc (Direct action of buying the cake), YOU - Dat (I bought the cake to GIVE TO you) 3) PLATE - Nom (Plate is the subject), TABLE - Dat (The action is being done to the table by the plate) 4) I - Nom (Subject), BERRY - Acc (Direct action of taking berry), TREE - Gen (The origin of the berry is the tree) 5) I - Nom (Subject), LESSON - Acc (Direct action of the completion of the lesson) Thank you so much, this is the probably the best explanation of cases I have seen. Can you please continue to do few more practice fridays for cases? Slowly giving us more advanced examples and exercises so that we can get a better understanding and practice of cases over time. Maybe 6 practice fridays for 6 cases?

this makes so much sense! I did not get that from the lessons, I have been doing, in the notes. I thought the entire sentence had to be a case, but did not understand how or why. I now see that the case is applies individually to each word that it applies to.

@BeFluentinRussian
@BeFluentinRussian 6 жыл бұрын
Dative is more of a transfer of things (giving to you), while in that case it's more of a directional thing. Im putting a picture onto the wall. It's hard to explain, and probably there's a better explanation. So, as soon as I find it, I ll share it!

....N A I 1. Mom made soup with salt N A D 2. I bought a cake for you N A 3. A plate is laying on a table N A A 4. I took a berry from a tree N A 5. I completed this lesson Is it wrong that I feel a bit more comfortable doing this in Russian than in English? Whenever I think of cases, especially in Russian, I automatically think "different endings" but when it comes to English because words don't necessarily undergo ending or stem changes, it's slightly offsetting because you have to think of a different way to identify what role a word plays in the sentence whereas, in Russian, one can simply look at the ending of a noun and tell how that word fits in the sentence. In this sense, I can now understand why English is difficult to learn because words don't undergo changes, it's a lot more difficult to tell if the word "me" in a sentence is used as "Me and my friend" or "Give it to me" Whereas, in Russian, there is a way to tell the difference, "Я и мои друзья" and "Дай мне". Disregard my little schpeel, I'm simply thinking out loud. But thank you, Fedor, for this lesson. It was very insightful and thorough! I always look forward to your new videos!

@carter2335 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not a teacher or a native russian, but I think there are some mistakes in your sentence (I can be wrong so don't take these as the right corrections): about the second sentence: торт is masculine inanimate singular so it's "Я купил торт для тебя" and для тебя should be genitive and not prepositional (because тебя becomes тебe in prep.) about the third: it's all right, but I think that на столе is prepositional and not accusative, because the plate is not moving, it's motionless, so it stays there in the table. you have to use accusative when you are moving to some place, conuntry, etc... about the fourth sentence: it should be Из дерева and not Из деревy, because in gen. sing. O becomes A so...no "y" in genitive case)

This video is so old I doubt anybody will answer this. I was under the impression that when it came to cases the whole sentence had to be in the same case. It would appear that a complete sentence can be made up of several different cases.
@somebodyuknow2507
@somebodyuknow2507 4 жыл бұрын
tsmartin yeah that’s not what cases are at all. Every noun in a sentence takes a case depending on its role in the sentence. Example: I hit you with my sister’s stick. I (nominative, subject) hit you (accusative, direct object) with my sister’s (genitive, possession) stick (instrumental). In Russian, Я (nominative, I) бью тебя (accusative, you) палкой (stick, instrumental) моей сестры (sister, genitive).
