This is great, very interesting. In a previous work life I met many Asian (mostly Chinese and Korean) students here in Ireland and it was striking how little connection there was between their formal qualifications in English and their actual ability to communicate. I know a few who are 'fluent' according to their IELTS or CELTA but really struggle in many situations, even after many years living here - they can't break out of their textbook 'box' to speak normally. But I've also met many who from day 1 are very comfortable in normal communication despite often just basic formal learning. I've become convinced that Stephen Krashen is correct that formal learning languages can often be counterproductive. The important thing is to relax and find material you enjoy. Talk if you are an extrovert - if you struggle with social aspects, then just read a lot of fun books and watch lots of fun tv shows or whatever. My best Chinese friend made a huge breakthrough when she started reading the mystery novels she loved in English, I could immediately hear how she improved.

Ielts is a joke. I scored 8/9 when i had never spoken any English or wrote anything in English in real life. I only memorized templates/ 10 essays and still got 6.5 for speaking and writing . I literally wrote unrelated shit for essays. In the speaking test i dominate the examiner by asking back the same questions and kept rotating the 10 senteces from memeory without a pause 😂 Confidence and speed is the key lol

You are a very beautiful Chinese lady, Zoe and your videos on language learning are super helpful ❤❤❤. I speak some English, and I didn't even know that "mute English" existed. I started watching movies I most love in English to level up my overall skills in the language. I can understand most English speakers whatever their accent in order to improve my listening skills so that I can speak better, more accurately and fearlessly. English has a very simple grammar compared to several languages, but many people, anywhere in the world, are still struggling to speak and master it. It should be really easy, as it was meant to be, but it actually takes a lot of time and practice. This applies to any language you want to learn. I do practice my English speaking skills very often, but I would not become proficient in the language if I stopped working on it. It's important to note that getting messy in one's learning style is advisable to look for fluency when it comes to language learning.

I am from Hungary, remember when I was taught german in the school at least for 8 year but I sucked at it because the whole teaching and way to comprehend it was unintuitive. The english is a bit better for me because I am a gamer and I started to learn through playing games so my english is much better than my german what I barely can use. The fear of speaking is a valid thing because it connects to confidence and if you like me who lacks of confidence usually find it hard to acquire new people, friends, learn new traits and use it confidently. My grammar also not the best but hopefully someone can understand it but I only care about to be understandable in my native language. The written english is better because by copying others and later add some meaning above it you can get through on some level but I personally not feel I will be on a level as native people but you can always learn something new. My approach to this or personal agenda to the matter would be: check what is interests you, try to aquire as much information to the subject in your mother tongue then try to translate those into a language your choice. If you have some knowledge on things or you find an interesting place, cultural slur, common identicals or even some food you like and you want to know the place where it's made then you have better starting points. Usually people will not start and speak naturally on a foreign language and not about deep talks hence people speak minor things or chit chat. With this way if you have time and patience and not lazy like me, then you can learn a language faster. The important thing is you need a little interest in on what the other people are interested in and trying to think with their head. If I were a Chinese person I would think about Jangce, (sorry if I write it wrong in my native language we write this way), the great walls, the culture bending with locals (I am aware in China there are a lot of kind of people and ethnicities), funny writing system, work your way to success and maybe the ricefields or even some coastal cities and their infrastructures. These things could give you some hint and idea where to start after you aquired a baseline knowledge. And no, I am not going to learn Chinese because for me it is difficult but I see as an interesting language and the importance of the grand scheme. Side note - I like your smile.

I think it’s one of the most common problems that people face in English learning. I was one of them too until I got older. I was a typical shy Japanese person always struggling with how to take the edge off my anxiety whenever I speak English. While I was in college I started drinking and talking to foreigners at bars and suddenly my speaking got better 😂 After a while I got used to speaking and I started to feel confident without beer. Might sound weird but it really worked for me lol

Exactly the same with a Japanese friend of mine! She said she spent the first 6 months of her college course in Ireland struggling to understand and speak. But she was dragged out by Irish student friends to the local pubs, and she said after a few beers she just found herself joining in the conversation naturally without thinking about it! I told her she discovered language learning by AI (alcohol influence).

Learning a new language is really difficult to me and I don't know why, it took more than half of my life to comprehend my mother language which is mandarin, and I started to learn basic English when I was 15 in a classroom with 10-year-old children. Fortunately, I do understand the rules of English grammar and a lot of new words, my English might not excellent but at least I can understand those words surrounding me and never stop attempting to learn new English words. Honestly, I admire those ppl who can speak and understand few languages like you without rote memorizing. I do have inspiration from you to keep doing the same simple thing to progress myself, hope to see your more quality videos in the future!

안녕하세요 Zoe. (Hello, Zoe. I'm glad to see you.) (My name is Kim Kwanghyun and I live in Korea. I'm trying to study linguistics, which is very useful information, thank you.) (I'm studying linguistics, but I'm studying Danjeon breathing and Myeongri(命理學)at the same time.) 1. (1. The reason why I study linguistics is because I think it will help me do what I want to do if I communicate well with foreigners.) 2. (2. The reason why I study Danjeon breathing is to find the health and self-identity of my body, mind, and mind. It has been more than 10 years since I started and I am a teacher who teaches trainees.) 3.Fusion명리학(명리학+IT)을 공부하는 이유는 사람마다 태어난 날짜와 시간, 그리고 잠잘때 자세를 알면 성격, 외모, 부, 명예, 권력 등 타고난 능력들과 그것들이 발현되는 시점을 아주 자세하게 알아낼 수 있어요. (3. The reason why I study Fusion Myeongriology (Famousology + IT) is that if I know the date and time of birth, and the sleeping posture of each person, I can find out in detail my natural abilities such as personality, appearance, wealth, honor, and power, and when they are expressed. For example, there is a person who is born with a fate similar to that of a "prince," and if you look at his or her study fate, he or she becomes smart from the age of 27 to the age of 47.) (If you use these parts, you can know at what point you should study, when you should do business, and when your personality starts to improve, so it can be helpful in your life.) (I have continuously studied how to produce accurate data by looking into the fate of celebrities and people around me.) Zoe. (Zoe, please. If you want, let me know when your birthday is, what time you were born, whether you sleep on your stomach or side, and I'll email you with details of your past and future fate.) (Please help me with my studies. Thank you)

I can understand everything, read a book comfortably and write without any hesitation, but when speaking, i just go blank. Hindi and punjabi are my native languages so no problem with them , first i thought it was bcoz that here are not english speakers that's why i wasn't able to use and speak english, but i realized i was wrong. From past 3 years, i have been learning korean by myself and can speak decently and i realized it wasn't about native speakers, it was that in india english is like considered a standard. Like the one who knows english is more smarter than the one who doesn't. So we are just not immersing ourselves and just reciting textbooks. So people does have fear of speaking wrong. I learned korean by myself and it wasn't a standard for me and i was not afraid to make mistakes and that helped me a lot! BTW, LOVE YOUR VIDEOS AND STARTEGIES AND TIPS❤❤ THNX! FOR SUCH A RICH CONTENT

Hi Zoe! How are you? Well, I want to share my journay too🙋‍♀. This is my 3th month studying English for the first time (I'm 28 years old by the way) and I'm follow step by step your English video ("Learn English as an adult. A1-C1"). I didn't have English in my school 🏫It's was a little of French, but they always teach the same: le présent. But, I've always watched movies in English so, I understand almost everything, maybe I don't understand some slang. And, in only three months I see a lot of improvement.👍By example, I can write this text and I don't feel shy to send to someone a text for being a language buddy partner. For me at least it's a big change, because I was starting from nothing. I write/correct a lot of people when they send things in Bussu. This week I did my first audios in English. I've started to notice something weird😆, but I think it's helping me and my mental health. "Yes, I finish my chapter of my book!" or "Or, this text doesn't have so many mistakes" can give your a lot of motivation. I'm so happy about it❤

@@Suheda.languages Your first language is Turkish? I put on Google Traslate to check what you said. Zoe has a video: "How to learn English as an adult? 0 to fluency (Resources, Methods and Study Plans)" 1) Pronunciation: I recommend you to see a lot of TV or KZfaq with SUBTITLES in English. Focus in pronunciation to learn how it is pronounce, this is 100% learn by memory. 2) Now, you have some basic vocabulary and you already know the pronunciation of a lot of words, but you need to learn "the real pronunciation". Learn IPA (The International Phonetic Alphabet) English has diferents sounds that you native laguage.

@@Suheda.languages These are my tips, hope this helps you: You can try with videos/series with a lower level, try to find A1/A2 level. Or Disney movies/Kids movies that you already know. Also, try to do every day for a short periods of time, if you start to stress because you do not understand it can be worse. Baby steps and constancy is the key to learn. Found a language partner: someone who is learning Turkish and they can help you while they learn your native language. What I do: I learn a sound of IPA, I search for words with that sound and I send it to my language partner and he tells me if I'm doing right. To learn IPA: my favourite chanel is "Michael Roberts - British Accent Method"

I have a similar problem, though not as bad as other anglophones, with Chinese, partly due to dialects, also because Chinese has sounds we really don't have or distinguish in English. I throw all the movies and videos I can at me, though maybe you have advice or could do a video on that topic.
