There's no way I'd have grasped the concept of these torsion angles if it weren't for this video. I owe you my life, no jokes.

Dr G N Ramachandran would have been so delighted to see your video if he was still amidst us. He did an amazing discovery and I have tried reading Lehninger, Voet to truly grasp the concept of phi and psi and no book could have done more justice to his contribution than your animated video. Heartfelt thanks.

I don't think those who wrote my book understood them either. like, at no point did they clarify that 6 atoms were co-planar, which to me seems kinda crucial...

VERY clear video, thanks! You'd think "basic" stuff like phi and psi would be difficult to forget but apparently not. My mnemonic; "NCC phi psi"; phi N-CC, psi NC-C. Middle C being the alpha carbon, of course - kinda intuitive and easy to remember since N -> C and "phi psi" is in alphabetical order (h before s; phi before psi)

Hi, is there any recommendation for group theory? I am a math-beginner for a biology major, but currently I need to deal with Euclidean group in molecular symmetry.

Incredibly helpful video on these dihedral angles, i for one really struggled to understand phi and psi from static 2D images - (for me they seemed to always be 180 in diagrams!). As soon as the image rotated in 3D space it all clicked and the clock diagrams were a nice touch as well for keeping track.

Thank you very much for this video! I might have never figured out what these dihedral angles phi and psi actually mean from those textbook descriptions. You know, they should really suggest something like a student should refer to a good KZfaq video for a better understanding, sometimes. And, I don't think not many people understand this concept clearly (even those who've been teaching this). Thank you very much! ❤️✨

we are saying that at particular values of phi and psi we have to look down in ramchandran plot and we will get an idea of its secondary structure but the plot u displayed is for alanine so if there is a peptide solely made up of alanine only then it can be true but if we are having variety of other amino acids in our peptide then how can we surely say that at those values corresponding will be the secondary structure. I mean the plot would have to change in that case

Hello I am learning this outside of the textbook for research. Can I ask why the substituents on the nitrogen are 180 degrees to each other? Shouldn't the nitrogen atom also have a lone pair so the substituents have to be 120 degrees or less apart? If this is a convention in some textbooks can someone explain the logic? Thanks very much. Edit: I think I just figured it out. Since the nitrogen is in resonance with the carbonyl, it does not have a lone pair and the N atom is essentially planar with only two substituents. It looks very cursed to have two groups 180 to each other in a Newman projection.
