Understanding Quaker Parrot Body Language

Quakers are notorious for being difficult to read their body language and understand it, especially if you are a new owner. The reasons it is so difficult is a) they are so quick to change their intentions and mood that you cant react on time and b) when they get excited and happy there is an overstimulated threshold where they switch from happy to angry and aggressive and its difficult to catch it. They are also known to out of the blue bite or attack, and you end up with experience and time around them developing a sixth sense for knowing when it's going to happen. But even I who has this still has my days where I miss their sign and get bit. Theres no one obvious answer I can give that fits the box for all quakers but I can give the basics that can later be a helping point to pick up their signs and I promise you will get better at catching them and reacting though do expect that you will miss them at times. We love them but they can be so evil on purpose. Be patient with them as this is the parrot you chose and they are highly rehomed for many of their trolling behaviour as they love to play around and sometimes rough house it not understanding our skin is so easily breakable.

I agree. These guys have a range of human-like behaviors and moods. My 20-year-old QP and I understand each other completely with our moods and feelings. My QP has mellowed out in his old age but still can be a demon sometimes. I'm 68 and we're probably the same age in bird years. my girlfriend and i love him even when he is a demon. Loads of fun when he's nice.

OMG best quaker vid ever. We have FIVE quakers - oldest is now 6 and the leader of the pack. So tired of people going on about their sweet little one that they have had for all of 3 months - they are truly little devils. i train them everyday. I hang with them everyday for at least an hour or two. I care for them as much as I care for my kids - bath, bedtime, regular meals, cleaning 'rooms', changing and updating toys, checking their health, their body/toes and MOST of all, watching over their interactions like they are in daycare ie break up fights, stop bullying, make sure everyone gets food, oh and stopping them from stealing shiny things from around the house. But they love us so much that they fly around the house and outside garden and still come home everyday.

@@mimisbirdhouse great video!! 💚 love your babies too! Also, just for future reference, “quaking” is a behavior that stems from an instinct that begins in the nestling stage 😊 quaker babies quake when they are hungry, specifically when they’re anticipating a feeding! The reasoning is the same though - excitement! Some babies all but grow out of it. But the large majority (as we well know) do not 😆 in my experience it seems to vary from one individual to another a little bit. Some do it any time they’re in an elevated emotional state, some do it mostly when they’re happy excited, and others do it when they’re being naughty or territorial! Anyways, just wanted to put that out there for ya! Thank you for your dedication to learning and educating others about our feathered companions. Quakers in particular have a very special place in my ❤ Keep up the greet work! Just subscribed and looking forward to future videos!

I have three now, and two are rescues. The one who ISN'T is my special angel (4 years old) who acts more like a tiel than a quaker often (except for being territorial for me). I do NOT recommend quakers for new bird/pet owners. They are adorable lil demons.

I totally agree with everything you said! My Quaker lived to be 27 years old. She was the sweetest thing & the devil bird! If you spend time with them they can speak quite well. My girl could sing the entire Sesame Street song. Sometimes she would repeat a verse over and over waiting for me to sing. Other times she got angry and squawked if I sang. She was extremely smart, bossy, sweet and mean all in one little bundle. It took me a couple of years to stop trying to pick her up when she gave me several warnings. Oh and if she wasn't ready to be put in her cage, she would fly all over the house to get away......I knew that I would have to put a small towel over her to avoid getting bit if she didn't want to go to the cage. I did love her being part of the family. I still miss her. I will say that it is a commitment and anyone that can't commit to taking care of them for a long time (20-30 years) maybe should not get one.

I have my second Quaker parrot. She is 18 years old. Never heard her growl or hiss...she mainly does a click noise when things scare or pies her off. I have other birds so even subtle body language hasn't been a big problem...but yes they do like to laugh after biting...which most nonbird people don't seem to think is funny at all. I love their busy, sassiness. They can be more of a challenge than some of my bigger birds....but so worth it. I enjoy seeing yours on the videos.

Hi Fellow Quaker friend Mimis, you rock! Advice, don't apologize for making content, you are helping people, and what you have here is spot on! Good on you! Mr. Otis is my blue QP, and he rocks, and yes he goes through everyone of these with exception of the hissing and wings out one. After years what I have observed is this Mr. Otis will hold a grudge, if you don't spend enough time he gets mad for a bit. And it's up to him as to when he's ready to drop the attitude. At first I used to get upset, now I just give him space and keep trying and then he's fine! So if in doubt, just give him space. One time he was in a mood, so I said ok, I am going to let you be free to experience real flight... He was never out on his own before, but I just knew that we bonded and I wanted him to have a chance to experience the world... And guess what he somehow found his way back after about an hour on his own, and ofcourse me looking like crazy! How he did it was beyond me. Also I won't do it again! Otis Flys free kzfaq.info6gpveW2OAEg Keep up the GREAT WORK, and I learned that tapping is sign that he's marking his spot, did not know that at all! Appreciate it! Stay strong all!

My quaker parrot is the chillest bird ever. She doesn't ever scream, she almost never shows any aggression. She's only 8 months old and hasn't started talking yet, she might never just because she's not super vocal. When she does a wing lift and tilts forward she wants to be picked up or she'll wave a foot at you to be picked up. She loves the hang out in my jacket all day and will take naps with me. Shes great with new people and isnt scared of any noises. Down sides, she doesn't like toys, so doesnt like the color orange, she doesn't like any sort of citrus, doesn't like most vegetables, wastes most of her food, and she likes to wander on the floor. But she is by far the most perfect bird (for me) that I could ever ask for
@mimisbirdhouse

The amount of times I've fallen for his cute act and then suddenly BAM! he's nipping at my arm 🥲 He totally laughs at me too, the little devil! And I definitely know what you mean by growling!! Rico growls a fair bit but it's usually because I had to put him down to do something else so to me it's more like a toddler throwing a tantrum when I hear it 🤣 Truly a menace, but he's adorable and I love him and his feisty nips so much!!! Hahaha awesome video, and so accurate! Yep, you are right quaker parrots finds it funny to see your pain. Bruno can come to me to kiss, cuddle etc. then he out of nowhere starts biting my hands so hard, I start to question my life choices ;) But he still is not messing with me as much as with others because I am ignoring his attempts to bite me, when my grandma started to show that she is scared every time Bruno comes to her very fast, he started to literally troll her. He was flying on her head, around her, biting her ears and fingers, things he never do to me. And he sometimes is coming to someone, biting ear, and starts laughing. And yes I have to guess what mood Bruno is at this moment, he seems cuddly then bam! bite. I know that he is angry if he sits in the cage for too long or if I am not home for too long. Or if i am trying to take something from him/ change his toys positions. He was absolutely furious when I bought him a new cage and started to move things from the old one. Hahaha yes the head shake :D Looks amazing when they do this. And tapping, Bruno is tapping my shoulder, usually when I am turning water on. Yep Bruno is sometimes hissing jus because. When it comes to the sounds when they are trying to mate with you...yea, it is hard to replicate you just need to hear that :D Sometimes he also is taking toys from me with visible aggression, like angry kid, like 'give me that freaking toy!!!' :D And yea, Bruno tries to mate my arm from time to time, that's when I know I have to back off. And yes I can agree with you on one more thing, when Bruno was a baby he was so sweet I was sure he won't bite me, when he started his puberty, well...:D Also sounds, when he was a baby he wasn't screaming. Now he has sleeping cage and cage dor a day because my parents can't stand his morning screaming at 5 AM :D And i kinda like those sounds.

Great video you are spot on I got my first Quaker parrot because I was sitting outside smoking a cigarette and it landed on my head I thought she was a dude for the first 3 years I had her until she started laying eggs by herself because she was so aggressive. I had her for 7 years until she escaped and I could not get her back because I was at work and I was the only one that she liked. I just went and picked up two little babies last month I've never had two at the same time wish me luck. ✌️🍻

Man I had a Quaker (Twinkie) when I was a kid. Was a great friend, but learned by trial and error how to handle him. Experienced everything you mentioned in the video. He would go into this attack mode for about 10-15 minutes where he would lift up his wings, start laughing nonstop while climbing/sliding down from his cage, and sprint full speed to me just to climb and attack me 😂. Had it where he would be cuddling with me just to bite the crap outta my face with no warning. Would have to endure the bites while putting him in his cage/house and locking it until he calmed down. They're beautiful maniacs.

Rescued a Quaker and named him Oscar (Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street). And maaaaan does that little turd live up to his name. He purs like a cat when I give him scratches on his neck and out of absolutely nowhere, he’ll just chomp my arm. I’ve also got a Goffin’s Cockatoo who was also a rescue. Used to pluck and have horrible separation anxiety and was scared to leave his cage. He’s fully recovered, no bald spots, and loves to fly outside. But to my point, rehabbing my cockatoo who’s species has a reputation for being difficult was significantly easier and more pleasant than any time I’ve had to deal with my Quaker. Love him to death but I don’t think I’ll be going out looking for another one anytime soon. Anyway, beautiful birds you have. Thanks for the video

People's replies are so different from my experience. We adopted our Quaker as about a 2 1/2 year old. He was somewhat bitey when we first took him in, but he got over it. Breeding season tended to be a little rougher. The rest of the year he was snuggly. Loved to sing. I did clip the outer two flight feathers as he had a tendency to fly into things. We also had young children in and out of the house all the time, and I did not want to risk him slipping outside. I do suspect that not being fully flighted may tame some of the random aggression. I realize that upsets some, but I think it is important to work with the individual bird and the living situation. Reepicheep lived until he was almost 29 years. It is very strange without him. I truly can't say I ever saw him bite out of spite or just for fun, other than possibly one time more than 25 years ago.

A few minutes is not enough for training, you need hours with them to bond. Your quaker sounds like he just doesnt trust you, and bringing another bird who he isnt bonded to can post problems. Quakers are parrots in need of a lot of attention as they are very social birds. They need many hours of out the cage with interaction and stimulation. It was mainly one of my qukers. The other one was more bonded to humans, and my sun was more bonded to humans. They all have their personalities. Keep in mind quakers are SUPER clingy so if your gonna get one be prepared to spend majority of your day with them.
