Hey, I just started walking daily for 7 miles and I am on my 18th day and I’m on the second day of experiencing what I now understand is a shin splint. My initial reaction was that my muscles were sore and like regular weight lifting or something it would go away. I was 126 kilos almost a year ago and I am 90 now but it was all achieved through a proper diet. I started to get really into talking around 17k steps a day and this is why I am now in this video! This is the second day and I found this video after I noticed that continuing doing what I was doing was making it worse. Thank you so much for you video, although I’ll be honest that it hurts me to have to rest it out from the walking activity I was starting to enjoy so much. I’m going to try all this out and hopefully it doesn’t knock me out of the game for too long because I am really enjoying my daily walks and I wanted to share with people how this could also happen just by walking! And of course I know my weight and activity level had a ton to do with it. Thanks again for this video, I learned a lot and I appreciate it very much. (Edit: the pain went away with a combination of a few days of resting, new walking shoes and massaging the spots that felt tender and the specific stretching that people recommend for shin splints. Hope this helps anyone else starting out.)

Thank you thank you thank you for such a CLEAR and STRAIGHFORWARD video! No advertisements or witholding expert advice for payment -- I don't think you even introduced yourself -- you just want people to avoid what you went through and to get better! Thank you again. This has helped me figure out what I have and given me a plan to get better. I was very confused because I'm not a runner, but I am a climber who's been doing a lot of slab climbing which involves lots of pressure your feet. I'm super sad to have to stop climbing, but every injury is an opportunity to listen to your body and become stronger than ever before.

I have suffered with shin splints in the past. I bear the scars from them in the form of bumpy shin bones. Just returned to running 5 months ago after a considerable break. Have eased back in slowly & thankfully after completing my first 10k in 5yrs no shin pain. I can remember having to hobble home though 😢

Thanks for sharing your personal story. I have hyper-kyphosis and it's easy for me to get shin splints just from walking too much because of all the muscle imbalances. I appreciate your comment that there's no one right answer to etiology and that you want to look at what's causing the issue such as weak glutes or dropped arch.

Thank you so much, I’m 73 years old and am experiencing shin splints for the first time. I walk around 5km a day, but I think it’s my foot biomechanics that might be the culprit as I’ve had a big toe fusion 5 years ago. This now prevents me from standing on my toes so I need to find alternative ways of strengthening. I’m so pleased I found your generous information.

Pretty cool! I started running a couple of months ago twice per week and about 2 miles per run. At some point I started feeling some discomforts but not knowing what I was I kept running. Then, the last time I went running I felt this stinging pain in my left tibia and calf muscle when I got back home. I believe its shin splints so I stopped running altogether. The first few days I only rested my legs. Now, I'm doing strengthening exercises like the ones in the video and using foot rollers/balls to loosen up my feet. Walking doesn't bother me whatsoever. Also, I believe my toes are slightly deformed due to wearing shoes for too long during the day. I'm correcting all these issues hoping I can get back to running in 3-4 weeks (October) since my last run. Ultimately, if I don't heal I'll take a break until spring next year. It sucks having to take a long break from running but I'd rather take the time to heal than to have permanent damage.

Excellent explanation and ways to correct the issue to get back to activity. My partner is going take time with this approach to get back to running. I feel he's doing to much and should alternate walk/run days with walking only or cycling running again but and some exercise to strengthen up the weak links. Some glute exercises would be heloful too. He has just started running again as he is an avid cyclist who doesn't walk too much. He did have this issue years ago. I will encourage him to exercise some as my clients feel the positive effects of even simple exercise. Thx. 😊

this is the best Shin Splints video on KZfaq; thank you. my pain-point is less-typically located higher-up my shin - about 1/3 of the way down from my knee; at the intersection line of the top and middle third of my shin - so does this mean the cause for me is less my Soleus muscle and more something else? is the Soleus stretch still what i should be focusing on?

@Horus137 hey man! A few days ago I went on a brisk. 5 minute run for about half a mile and I didn't feel anything so I was feeling pretty positive. However, I did a second run at about the same slow pace and I started to feel a bit of discomfort on my shin towards my ankle. Previously the shin splints were so bad I actually ended up getting x-rays to make sure it wasn't a stress fracture as my legs would visibly shake after a run. So unfortunately my recover isn't quite there yet but I'm hoping in 2 or 3 weeks it'll be fully healed. It's progress but unfortunately it's not quite 100%

I started taekwondo when I was 12 and i think thats whats prevented a lot of bodily injury for me as an adult. Ive since moved on to jiujitsu and ive never had any type of leg/ankle injury despite many instances where i should have broken something or gotten shin spints from other training. I used to run and train taekwondo with ankle weights on and everyone told me id get shin splints but i never did. I truly believe it was because i started training lighter at a younger age and slowly built up my legs. My shoulders have taken a beating from jiujitsu, but my legs are peachy

Started running about 2-3 monhs ago, made enough progress to now do 5k+5k+10k runs every week. The 10k run sometimes ends up with light shin splints, not too painful, a 1/10 pain I would say. What seems to help is massaging the area in the hours/days after the run and the calf exercise that you mentioned in your video. I will stop increasing running distances and keep my current routine until I feel more comfortable with my 10k runs.

Great video. I've had recurring problems with shin splints since I was a kid, up till now largely due to not understanding the causes and how to treat it. It put me off running most of my life because it shattered my confidence, I thought it just wasn't for me. I wish they taught this stuff in school gym class - there is zero instruction on running form and leg strength training. I started running again recently and was overly excited, so increased my pace faster than my body was ready for, so I'm back to square one again. It's so frustrating but as you say, better to focus on increasing strength rather than keep running - for now. Thanks for the advice...

i'm not a runner, but i did a 5 k about two weeks ago now, i did so much better than when i did the same 5 k three years ago (because i've been on a health journey) I got a lot of confidence from that run and started using the treadmill at my small gym. I noticed a pain in my right shin much more after i ran at the gym, today i ran on it a little again, it hurt like a b*tch, but i'm happy i'm watching this video, because now i'm icing my leg and will stop running till it heals. What I thought was even more crazy, was a few days ago i got the insane urge to buy a bike, and i also got a huge tub meant for horses and cows to drink from (im going to use it for ice baths or just to soak outside.) Anyway, i still really wanted that bike and just got it today before i watched this video, I was so amazed when you said "pick up something else like cycling" My jaw literally dropped, the universe is just so awesome 😂❤ (P.S my 5 k time was 36:37, keep in mind the last time i did one was three/four years ago and i didn't even finish that one because i got lost!😂)

Never done running but I do a lot of walking and I dance for a hobby. Recently I developed what I think to be shin splints and it's been agonising torture. I like to walk the 1.5 miles into work and then home again but since about a month ago I've been having to stop at least 4 or 5 times on route because the pain is too much. It starts as a burning down the fonrt of my leg and quickly intensifies until it feels like my leg is just made from searing acid. Anyway, watched this video iced my leg for 20 minutes every couple of hours (as per NHS advice for shin splints) and now when at home I do heel walking to get around the house. The results have been pretty much overnight. It's still painful but I now only need to stop 2 or 3 times instead of the 4+ before and the pain is dulled from an 8 down to 4 maybe 5.

Thank you very much for these videos; they are really helpful. I'm a runner, and when I increased my running volume, I developed medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS) confirmed by an MRI. However, you mentioned something very interesting regarding my case. I also have a problem with movement from the hips. It's not particularly painful, but it's annoying because I can hear clicking sounds. Could this be related to MTSS? To be honest, I'm experiencing several issues in my right leg, including at the ankle. could it all be becouse of the wrong mechanical movemont at the hib or it is not rleated ? ??

Hey so, I've mostly played football in fields with grass, or syntethic, but it was all good, but last three weeks i played in cement fields, and this past saturday, even though i was playing in the grass one, i felt like an aching pain to my shins and i couldn't even run, every step was hurting, if i touched my shins it felt like if i had got a hit from someone playing, but that wasn't clearly the case. To resume, thanks a lot for the video and for the explanation! Been doing the stretching part and it seems to cool off the pain. Again, thanks a lot. 🇦🇷

Most comprehensive video I've found about this and how to address it. Thank you very much for sharing this openly! I've increased my frequency to daily runs and it has resulted in the pain described in the video. What surprised me is that after 1 - 1.5 km the pain has disappeared for the rest of the run. The pain itself wasn't that unbearable, but of course, noticeable. What I did to address it is that I've stopped for a 5 days, massaged my legs and used Voltaren (local inflammation decreasing gel) on the area. I've done a test run yesterday. The pain has decreased a lot and after a few hundred meters, I had no issues. Currently planning to do these exercises for the rest of the week, then give another try for a test run. I'll also adopt these exercises to my warm up routine for the future.

great video, thank you very much! A question though - can we say that a shin splint as the one you described is caused by an insufficiently strong soleus? I mean for the undertaken training intensity / frequency / whatever

So far, full body workout for 10 minutes pre run has taken away lower leg pain first half my runs. Agony if dont do some sort of workout before, doenst effect a long run too much. Not going for any pb's so dont see any reason being prefatigued a bad thing.

My shins hurt terribly when driving in heavy stop-go traffic (brake, clutch and gas pedals). To the point I fret that I might crash into a car ahead with a sudden uncontrollable press of the gas pedal. The pain goes after a couple days rest. Is this a shin splint problem? Which muscle groups should I strengthen. Thanks a ton for explaining the muscles visibly on a model.

Great video Ashley. Last week my 1000 mile run through the UK ended because of shin splints. I went and had a X ray and then a MRI done to determine if there was any stress fracture. Nothing. I am now 10 days on since the injury occurred and are feeling really good. Zero pain, have done some of the last stretches you referred too and no pain. I am doing a 1400 mile run in 6 months time, so want to make sure my recovery is thorough. My big concern is, how long will it before before I can start jogging again and then training given my current prognosis?

I have Shin Splints. In my case it happens when too much too soon. I was a sprinter. I ran without any issues. I then become lazy and got some fats and weights. Now when I am trying to be fit, my shin bone is chilling and in no mood for working. So take care of it like your girlfriend. You have to know when you are overpushing Or overtraining. U can't date a girl and marry her on that very moment. You have to be patient. And as for the cure of this I can say that a long rest and slow increase in intensity has worked for me. I know you've got it. Oh and by the way you can convince your Shin sooner and easier than that girl of yours. Trust me.

Thanks for the very nice video. I am a runner and anytime I start increasing the load to run a 10 miles or improve my speed , my shin splints (mainly posterior) increases to a level of pain I have to stop. What would be great a guidence how to handle it without stopping after the acuute phase at least (10 days no run etc..). Because a 3 months no run means I will loose my all running fitness :/ thanks a lot.

Thank you for this, very informative and useful as always. What if there is no other activity I could do? I run every day, but only 10 minutes and it’s very relaxed running. It is very important I do that because it helps with neck and back pain (I sit at work all day). I am very reluctant to stop this activity, and I feel like the shin splints are not getting worse, but there is always a bit of pain. Do you think it is possible to do foam rolling, stretching and strengthening but also keep running?
@PrecisionWellbeing
@PrecisionWellbeing 3 жыл бұрын
There's always an alternative, you just have to be creative and find it. If you don't feel that your running is making your shin splints worse then it's up to you to continue with it, but although it's not getting worse, is it stopping you getting better? It could be possible that foam rolling, massage, stretching and strengthening could help it. Try and see what works. Let me know how you're getting on in a few weeks time though. Best wishes, Ashley

If the pain is a little sore to the touch, slightly noticeable after an hour of running and a little sore after the run can i just dial back my running amount and have it recover? It seems like its the muscle i use to push off or from running on steep hills.

Yeah. I was stupid, starting getting fit, going gym going for jogs. Climbed Snowden with some pals. Next day didnt feel too bad, just a little pain, thought it was just muscular and went to go for a light jog. Half way through both legs were in agony. I tried to push through but went home. Every time I jog now I get pain and been the same for around a year and 2 months. Cant get rid of them.

question: do you think consistent and intense weight training of the legs can also trigger something like shin splints? I am not a frequent runner but have been running every other day now and have never experienced this pain before. I have played soccer my whole life and never had an issue with lower leg pain until now. The past year I have been training legs very consistently and put them under very heavy loads throughout the week. I just wanted to know if that is also a factor and if training the same way will hinder any rehab process I partake in?

I have shin pain and went to see a specialist, they say it could be weak hips, glutes, shin muscle and calves.. I have been given exercises for it, do you recomend to keep walking when doing the exercise programmed, because I have put on an extra 20lbs and because of this my shins hurt a tiny bit more, it's not painful to walk but rubbing my fingers across it has a dull tender pain.?

Thank you for your advice, I was training in the gym doing deadlift with 60kgs each side and when I got home I had pain in my left hip which after about a week went to the outside of my left calf and the front of my shin also left leg, I've already had a full compartment syndrome operation on my left leg but I just like to keep on training, I think at times I push too hard, I've been icing the leg three to four times a day plus Ibupofen 400mg three times a day for last week, still have pain and bearing weight standing up still but OK when moving about i.e. walking slowly. any advice for me? again thank you.
