The fact that the universe is the dream of someone makes the Lich's lesson make complete and total sense. As a child, you climb into bed and you're afraid of the dark. Inside your mind, there are only monsters. Then you fall asleep, and there's nothing. Then you dream, but when you're in a dream, it's like the dream was always there.

I mean, it's not hard to understand from a meta standpoint. Prismo's boss is the one who first dreamed up the multiverse and it's people and set the first laws. Prismo's boss is an external entity, not of the multiverse. AKA Pendleton Ward. Even without further episodes the multiverse continues to exist thanks to us, the fan base.

"What do you think, Finn? Can we pull back the layer of static and reach into the source of all being? Behind this curtain of patterns, this random pattern generator... so clever, right here in every home, watching us from a one-sided mirror." This quote from Ice King always stood out to me, and I think it's a bit of a meta commentary not only on Adventure Time being a show, but also how the Adventure Time universe works in the lorel. If there's no one watching the stories/episodes, then the show (and the world) will end. However as long as there are at stories to tell (not only in the minds of the "official" writers but also the fans) then the Adventure Time universe won't end because it has someone watching. When the Lich asked for "the extinction of all life" as his wish, the Universe didn't properly end because the Audience, Finn, Jake, and Prismo were isolated from that request and therefore there were still people watching and keeping at least part of the universe in existence. Sorry, old Adventure Time fan ramblings. I used to be big on theories back in the day 😅

That idea works so well that it makes me wonder if that was their intention, and they just never outright stated it as to not overexplain the Lich. Because he also calls himself a "scholar of GOLB," and GOLB represents total chaos, it would seem that the Lich wants to eradicate all life in order to return existence back to the primordial monsters that existed before time. It works way too well!

The creation of the universe has to be connected to the extinction of the primordials. The way I see it, back then the primordials were babies (just in terms intelligence) that would throw around their massive powers with thought. Then i would wager some of them gained a understanding of themselves and their powers which eventually led to a primordial war that ends with the creation of the universe.

There way too many lovecraftian inspirations in adventure time for me to count. Like the cosmic imagination is just straight up based on a widely know misconception of Azthoth (of whom I bet Golb is also based on so a small theory I just thought up is Golb not simply being an aspect of the dream but in fact the actual representation of the cosmic imagination trying to burn down the dream and escape back to reality)

@@TrueLocalEnthusiast I remember there being a theory that the sea of monsters is what’s left of a previous cosmos. Perhaps the cosmos that is the previous before it was destroyed by Golb and the previous Primordials, and just maybe this process was happening way before even this previous cosmos. My working theory is that the dream ends once Golb or perhaps whatever iteration of him was destroying the multiverses, was cosmic imagination allowing itself to wake up and once it falls at sleep creation begins a new and the cycle repeats itself. Just a theory tho tbh

I think the Cosmic Imagination is a meta element Who was the first who dreamed Ooo? Well, it was Pendleton Ward, of course. He is the cosmic imagination. And now it is Adam Muto and the rest of the crew. Also, time existing all at the same time makes sense, and it's probably how it works in our universe as well. Space and time are one and the same, so if space exists all at the same time, why shouldn't time as well? It also ties to the cyclical nature of adventure time's history and themes

Something i don't see anyone mentioning is the picture of abraxas next to golb in the book Simon is reading when explaining what golb is. Abraxas in real life is the representation of the material world, either an avatar of the demiurge, the creator of the material world, or one of it's archons. The moment I first heard of the Cosmic Imagination I was reminded of the Godhead from the Elder Scrolls. It's an entity that unconsciously manifested the entire Elder Scrolls universe from its dreams, and exerts little to no conscious influence over its creation. There are a lot of similarities between AT and the Elder Scrolls, like beings that experience time in a non-linear fashion, and destroyers whose entire goal is seemingly to end all existence (The Lich and Alduin the World Eater).
@theenderdestruction2362

Alduin main job is to end the current kalpa but yeah pretty much, my favorite part is that no mortal can ascend in the normal fantasy way, you have to trick the godhead itself into believing you are the god your trying to mantle, so hence my headcannon that the hero of kvatch is just playing a act and very few people actually know about this, anyways that's one of mt favorite parts no one is able to actually ascend you have to trick the LITTERAL godhead into believing you are that god, and it isnt easy nor is it painless

I think it's fascinating that the cosmic imagination is dreaming. it makes sense to me that everything would start as chaos, and then slowly reality would form around it. After all when you're dreaming it doesn't make sense, but over time you start to buy the strange setup that you're given in your dreams. Like when you just sort of understand something without having any way of knowing. I imagine most of reality is just a strange, entertaining, chaotic show that the cosmic imagination is just letting happen... but sometimes, something happens that is so fundamentally against how the cosmic imagination perceives reality, that it changes it. not much, just enough to keep the dream semi-coherent. This would also explain why entities that can affect dreams (king worm, nightmare princess, the cosmic owl, etc) are so rare and so powerful. Dreams are literally the foundation of existence so it makes sense that even mortal dreams are treated with such reverence

Abstract concepts in adventure time like life, death, imagination ect. Are way more abstract then how we in real life presuppose things, whether we know things for a fact or not. Things we believe in are only thought of because of us. Yet in adventure time, concepts themselves are universal constants, since if the balance of reality is held together through the power of belief. This shows that the world of adventure time only exists because WE see its happening.

An interesting theory I though of: what if the Adventure Time Reality’s existence was caused by a Bootstrap Paradox Loop, maybe at some point in the distant future, someone learns about the origin of the multiverse and the primordial sea before it, then when time itself ends and the multiverse ceases to exist, this being is the last soul surviving, they use the cosmic imagination to create the primordial sea, then the entities in said sea eventually gain enough sentience and understanding of the cosmic imagination to create the multiverse once again (technically for the first time), this somehow causes their extinction and the events that lead to their creator’s creation (and their creation itself) begins

This is also the secret of both the lovecraft universe and the elder scrolls universe. But if you think about it, doesn't that mean that everyone is also the person dreaming? If you were to encounter azathoth or something, could you not say "wait, that's me." And realize that you are inherently azathoth devoting some of its attention to roleplaying the life of a human?

I wonder how the deadworlds fit into this. Either A: They are inside reality and thus killing everything wouldn't end the dream, or B: they are outside and the universe would disappear but the deadworlds likely would stick around. This also might explain why the Lich worded his wish to Prismo so strangely "The extinction of all life" simply wishing for everything to die would just send them all to the deadworlds, but extinction is something permanent, and if souls are just life essence they would be destroyed as well likely ending reality.

I think it's interesting cause you could technically deactivate The Lich by using the knowledge of the book. Prismo says that he deactivated in his time room because he couldn't escape or kill anyone. If you presented the fact that all times and universes are happening simultaneously to him you could prove that he could never achieve his goal cause if he could they'd all not exist. Sort of a "this statement is false" paradox for a computer.

I've recently been falling down a rabbit hole on youtube about quantum mechanics. It sounds complicated but most of the videos I've watched mostly focus on just the conceptual aspects and explain it in plain terms, without focusing too much on the math, even though quantum mechanics is pretty much 90% math lol. But the few philosophical implications of quantum mechanics are still fascinating. A lot of the aspects of the lore of adventure time kind of seem to be inspired by these ideas of quantum mechanics, and just theoretical physics in general. The idea that something does not exist unless there is an observer to describe it, or "believe in it" as you put it. The idea that time is nonlinear, our perception of time is actually an illusion. Even the little bit about the universe falling into chaos after all life ceases to exist. Some hypotheses state that when the universe eventually "dies" and is devoid of all matter (which would take like, a googol years), random quantum fluctuations will rule the world. It's difficult to explain, but basically the main idea is, that with enough time, anything that can happen will happen, sort of. In other words, chaos. A cat could just materialize into existence due to random quantum fluctuations (theoretically, at least). Of course, every single particle would have to randomly arrange itself into the perfect form of a cat. It's more likely for particles to arrange themselves into a boring clump of gas or something. Still, there's an infinitesimally small chance of the particles arranging themselves cat-wise, and because eternities are analogous to a nanosecond during this age of the universe, with enough time, it could eventually happen.

This is so similar to Buddhist cosmology. We believe that reality is subjective and that the material universe is entirely dependent on the observer. We live in a dream-like reality, and enlightenment is waking up from it. Quantum physics is actually slowly starting to unravel this theory as well, with the recent Nobel Prize having been given to scientists who proved that the universe is not locally real. I love how Pendleton Ward has introduced so many Buddhist concepts into this show.

The way Adventure Time's universe works reminds me a lot of Mage the Ascension, where Consensus (reality and it's laws) is what masses consider to be true and Mages are those who saw through the veil and find themselves able to alter reality to some extent, with possible Paradox backlash from universe, as a way to punish them for breaking it's laws

The magic/dreamer in adventure time is similar to the concept Chim in the elder scrolls where a person realizes they and the world is a dream but still recognize they exist (poor summary check it out on your own). Once someone achievement chim that level of enlightenment grants them the power of a god. This is what talos used to become one of the Nine.
@CertainlySnazzy
@CertainlySnazzy Жыл бұрын
This was my first thought, it is really similar to the Godheads dream that contains the Elder Scrolls universe. I’m gonna elaborate on Chim incase anyone who reads this is interested (also i’ve been obsessed with TES lore for the past month and need an outlet) The concept of Chim is realizing the universe and everything in it is just a dream, yet still retaining the ego to say “I exist” when all logic says you shouldn’t. You basically become a lucid dreamer, and can manipulate the dream as you see fit. However, if you fail to retain your sense of self upon realizing this, you don’t achieve CHIM but instead experience what is basically ego death. You realize you logically cannot exist, and so you don’t. It’s usually called Zero-Summing, and when it happens you cease to exist or have ever existed. TES lore is crazy, if anyone is interested I implore you to check it out.

A TV show. You described a TV show. It only exists when it's being perceived, events that have transpired are nonlinear, being able to play in any order at any time, but only making sense going to start to finish. With certain entities simply having more power based on their potential, otherwise known as their plot relevance. Remember that Golb's scream, that renda reality around him, removes the color palatte and degrades the style to a hand drawn animation, because reality is a show, with events that have a set beginning and end but can be perceived in any order, but must be perceived in order to exist. That is also what catalyst comets are, the addition of concepts or characters to the show. With the Hero Comet came Shoko, Finn, and now Shermy. With the Death Comet came the Lich, and the extinction of the Dinosaurs. The lore of Adventure Time is that reality is a narrative, and a narrative that seems to repeat time and time again, as Marceline said. Magic, by extension, is to realize that this place is unreal and your limits merely a manifestation of the status quo, and to bend the rules and do things a character within the fiction is not meant to be able to do.

So is the reason why the people of Fiona and Cake universe exist is because people of Ooo perceived them that they exist through Simon's story. And the reason why Cake(non magical) popped out behind Simon's head is because he was the one who originally perceived their existence. Edit: Hahhaa got close on episode 4 Spoiler : Fiona and Cake universe exist because Prismo wants it to be real but can't wish it for himself instead prejected it to Ice King while he sleeps thus perceiving it and making it exist.
@RicPendragon

'ang about! Ice King says he doesn't dream of Fionna and Cake, but the images are beamed into his head when he sleeps. And these beams have been caught on VHS before...so the imagining of them makes them real and them being real influences the imagining of them...

Never thought that the Elder Scrolls and Adventure Time would share a baseline consensus on the nature of reality, sort of. The difference is that in the Elder Scrolls, the universe is not based on consensus but is acknowledged as not being actually real and instead a dream of an unknowable Godhead. The idea of being able to shape reality by believing things is also true but I imagine is far harder based on the criteria for doing so in ES.

I think the excerpt from the book is more metaphorical than say legit. Its like that one saying, "if a tree were to fall and nobody to see it, did it really fall?" Or something like that. Though the reality being a dream of a higher being still makes sense and still explains magic. Magic is essentially manipulating the dream without following the basic rules of it. What princess bubblegum fails to understand is that magic is more reliant of ones will power than material needs like technology.
