if anyone is wondering whether or not they should start this diet, start RIGHT NOW! I've been on this diet and lost 75 pounds in 3.5 months with exercise! My sibling who is on this and doesn't exercise still lost 50 pounds in 5 months. Definitely worth it!

I did Atkins for several months about 20 years ago. Not only did I lose tons of weight, gain tons of energy, achieve mental clarity, eliminate my low grade depression, reverse prediabetis, lower cholesterol but the greatest benefit was that sense of euphoria I was able to achieve. These days, I’ve been researching all the latest diets like keto or lchf etc. After all of this, I’ve come to the conclusion that for insulin resistance, hypercortisolism (Cushings), Atkins is still the best way to go along with fasting. Ty Dr. Atkins. RIP

My husband and myself were personal patients of Dr. Atkins. My husband had malignant hypertension and was on all kinds of meds. After six weeks on the diet, we had both lost considerable weight and my husband was able to get off his meds. I was pre-diabetic before the diet but my sugar numbers plummeted on this diet. This diet works!

Atkins is my go to!!! It is very sustainable and realistic however I sometimes start sneaking in carbs over time and realize the weight gain then I just go back to induction. I love being in ketosis!!!!! So much energy, low low mood swings, and I’m burning my own fat!! Thanks Dr. Atkins for everything.

Just got back from my endocrinologist. Started the Atkins/Keto way of eating in April. I've lost over 30#, a1c is now 6.7, neuropathy is gone. I'm off all insulin and oral DM meds except metformin. Blood sugars are normal and stable. Blood pressure was 160's/90's, now 127/71. Cholesterol is half of when i started. I no longer need a statin. Even skin keratosis I've had for 3 years is gone after a few weeks on this. This way of living saved my life and has many others. Sugar is killing us. Try cutting out bread, pasta, milk. Go easy on the fruit. Start eating a high fat diet, moderate protein and low carbs. It really has some wonderful dishes to try. You can eat out about anywhere. This diet is recommended for children with seizures, inflammatory illnesses including arthritis, IBS, cardiac problems, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and even cancer since cancer feeds off of sugar. I am never going back to a low fat, high carb diet again. This works! And no cravings! Shame on you ADA for advocating this lie. It's hard to stand for truth when your funding comes from drug companies and sugar producers. Picked up your cookbook at the library, 43 carbs for 1 serving of one entree ! More than i can eat in a day! Shame, shame. People trust you.

With all due respect; also in previous times, people weren't couch potatoes either and they worked from sun up until sun down; they got plenty of exercise to burn off any weight. Also, they didn't have all the processed chips, candy bars, fast foods, etc. that keep you hungry and make you fat. Food for thought

i've been doing low carb for 2 years now and lost 90 lbs in 1.5 yrs and kept my weight. i even lost 5lbs more in one week when i started over again to loose some 20 more lbs. my resting heart rate went down from 80-110 to a steady 60 all day. my blood sugar levels went down from 110 to 80 and when i do sports it stays at 70 for 2 days even after meals. i have a lot more energy and was able to perform a 1 hour workout with an average heartrate of 140 (min 135, max 160, never going below 135 for 60 minutes) just after four 30 minute workouts and i never did any sports before, not even when loosing the 90 lbs. and i wasn't exhausted at all. can't think of any healthier way to live and feel. just my 2 cents..

Not sure chemically what was going on with me in March of 2011, but I went from 240 to 195 in just a month doing Induction. I was having seconds on steak and veggies, eating Swiss and cheddar cheeses, and ate like 2 Endulge bars a day. If this hadn’t happened, I know I’d have missed out on such a miracle!! I had a line dance workshop in Atlanta just in time for the weight loss, and I don’t remember the exact inches I lost in my waist, but my arms went down 2 inches each!! Atkins is a miracle!! Of course this happened at age 29.

It is a life style change on it 17 years ago lost 50 pounds. But went back to junk food a few years later and put the weight back on. Getting ready to jump back into it. And yes it is harder to get going but I love the notion I can lose weight thru Ketosis. I start tomorrow. bought the food I need. the family will eat their meals. But I am back on my journey. My dietician told me 8 pounds would be enough to lose. I think more like 30 pounds.

I've lost a little over 14lbs on Atkins and nearing the end of my 2nd month. Because I took a small break and am getting closer to my goal, the weight loss is slowing down but I'm happy with the results. I was on a plateau for awhile and just could not get the weight down, that's why I picked up Atkins in the first place. It's helped so much. In total, I've lost over 40lbs since deciding to lose weight.

I had to lose about 35 pounds so through trial and error I have discovered something that seems to be working so far. I alternate the Atkins diet and 1200 daily calories every other day. So far I've lost 1 pound every day for a week, 7 pounds total. Of course I expect to lose less each week after this but the main thing is that the weight is coming off on this plan and not so fast on other diets I've been on. And believe me I've been on many! On my Atkins day I do not count carbs but I also do not eat anything with carbs except vegetables. I also eat both full-fat and light foods. I don't consume Atkins bars or shakes, just pure food. On the 1200 calorie day I eat all the carbs I want within the maximum calories allotted. Anyway, so far this plan is working and I am happy!

I am sitting here almost in tears because this is just yet another thing for me to look at and try and then fail. I wish someone could come up with a video that includes letting people know that if they have a hormonal and metabolic disorder to being with then it really doesn't matter what you do. It really does feel like that sometimes. I have Polycystic Ovarian System with is such a terrible thing to have as a woman. One of the main symptoms is WEIGHT GAIN AT AN ACCELERATED RATE. You gain weight faster than most people. I have seen gynecologists and an endocrinologist and they have both told me that is just very very very hard to lose weight. One told me to just cut out all the refined carbs. He said specially white pasta, white bread, white rice, white potato. So I did and I gained weight. I make sure that most of my food is homemade. I have healthy fats all the time. I have green vegetables all the time. I have so much protein but still I am stuck with this body....don't know what to do anymore. So unfair that there are women out there who are just born with perfect genes and can eat whatever they want and never gain weight. Just feel like crying about all of this....

You still have to watch calories. AND it’s about consistency. We didn’t get overweight over night and it can take many months and years to really see a significant change. But it’s daily consistency. Example … if you only go to the dentist once a month for a cleaning, will that prevent tooth decay ? No. Because you have to brush DAILY.

@EDECO79 Paleo is also cost prohibitive, since a strict application of the Paleo diet emphasizes things like grass fed beef, free range chicken and pork, as well as wild caught fish. These items are far more expensive than you regular grain fed beef, cage raised chicken and pork, and farm raised fish. Though there is a lot of agreement between Atkins and Paleo dietary guidelines, concerning carb restriction, Paleo is less accessible, in its orthodox application, because it is so expensive.

Eat proteins and unsaturated fats, but stay off the bad carbs which are mostly refined sugar... Anything that is white is bad... Bread, potatoes, rice, etc... Veggies are good if they are green... That Christopher Gardner lecture at Stanford was described by Gary Taubes in Why We Get Fat: "He begins the lecture by acknowledging that he’s been a vegetarian for twenty-five years. He did the study, he explains, because he was concerned that a diet like the Atkins diet, rich in meat and saturated fat, could be dangerous. When he described the triumph of the very low-carbohydrate, meat-rich Atkins diet, he called it “a bitter pill to swallow.”"

Carbs = sugar. When you eat carbs they are turned into sugar in the body (by glycolysis in a very short space of time).

Correct. Most people seem to forget this little tidbit. Carbs = Glucose, Fructose and Sucrose. Glucose causes faster aging. If your brain needs glucose, it will convert protein to glucose (glucogenesis). The brain needs very little glucose and runs fine on Ketones (Fat = ketones).

An Atkins advocate told me just the other day that I was most likely torpedoing my weight loss efforts by eating so much sugary fruits. So I ditched the mangoes, grapes, bananas and got rid of my brown rice. And although I ate a lot of strawberries and blueberries with full fat yogurt yesterday, I was three pounds lighter today. However, I am not going to jump to any conclusions until I shed at least 15 more pounds of blubber. Only then will I know this diet is working for me.

Yes, it does work! The atkins diet is one of the most effective and reliable ways to lose weight. Carbs make us fat; not fat just itself. They (carbs) do that by triggering the increased secretion of pro-fat storage hormone, insulin. In particular, when carbs are in excess, the excess as converted into glycogen then stored in the liver and muscle cells but since the glycogen stores are limited, the increased intake of carbs prompts the body to convert the excess glucose to fatty acids and glycerol, which are then stored in the various fat stores around the body. So when you reduce the intake of carbs, you effectively reduce the amount of insulin that ends up being secreted, open up the fat stores for metabolism and reduce the body’s inclination to store fat. When you pair low carbohydrate intake with high fat and high protein intake, you have a perfect recipe for weight loss. How is that? Well, fats and proteins tend to have satiating effects, which essentially means that if your diet involves lots of fats and proteins, you are unlikely to want to keep eating because these two macronutrients are filling and take longer to be digested. This ultimately makes it easy to lose weight and keep it off. The atkins diet is one of the most effective and reliable ways to lose weight. This book is where I started. It's a great way to get things going and meet your goals. www.amazon.com/dp/B071YVVLRN

"How can the low carbohydrate diet work if you are taking in fat." It limits insulin secretion. Insulin is what makes people fat. We can know this because we can observe that Type 1 diabetics can't get fat, no matter how much they eat, unless they inject insulin.

I am just starting today, doing induction phase 1, i am ok with low carbs but why can't i have milk tea? i know excessive caffeine can cause low blood sugar which can make you crave sugar, but i am not really a sweet tooth kind of person, i don't even like chocolates or ice creams or sweet stuff, u get my point. So having brewed tea, with about 2tbs milk per cup, i have just max 4 cups of tea per day, would that affect my phase 1 with atkins? And what about sugar, sweeteners will do? or best not having any sugar?? confused.
@xraystylex
@xraystylex 9 жыл бұрын
WintaTime the answer is lactose (milk sugar). it's a kind of sugar with a glycemic index of about 35. that's not very high, but most vegetables have a glyc. index of about 10 to 20. induction phase is only a week up to three, so try not to drink any milk until then, after that you can add some again, but add the net carbs of the milk. it's all about your body learning to use fat instead of sugars. and eating milk sugar destroys that plan and your body will stay with sugars. that's why.

The Atkins diet isn't geared to Olympic or Pro athletes. It's geared to overweight and obese people eating a crappy diet. And it works. It's been proven in dozens of randomized controlled trials that low-carb/high-fat ketogenic diets are superior to any other diet for weight-loss, glycemic control, insulin-sensitivity, cholesterol ratio and triglycerides. Using the "pro athletes don't eat low-carb" argument is rather ridiculous since 99.99999% of the planet aren't pro athletes.

This video is mostly just an advertisement for Atkins products. You don't need any of those over priced, low carb, specialty products to enjoy a low carb diet. You can go to the farmers markets and buy reasonably priced, organic veggies and sometimes meats, and buy the cheaper meats (nitrate free ones!) at the health food stores.T

I think it's easy to declare that you already see results after a few days or weeks. Here is an example of American people that follow the Atkins diet. I think that if you as an American people follow any diet, you will see result after a few days, or weeks because of the change of the food. It's already known that the American food is in general more unhealthy. So if you change a little thing in the food I think that all the American people will lose weight.

"MCS? Very 1989." No. 1968. Remember this?: "Indeed, the results of the study went unpublished for sixteen years, by which time the controversy had been publicly settled. [...] The Minnesota trial began in November 1968 [...] When I asked Frantz in late 2003 why the study went unpublished for sixteen years, he said, “We were just disappointed in the way it came out.”"

still alive? isn't it interesting how Henry Blackburn who's there at the time at the age of 98 and is still publishing papers told a different story. Go check the Minnesota study. Henry Blackburn's work was cited. he and the author said since the patients were getting out of the hospitals here and there. Hospitals stays on average is 292 days and they couldn't track those people. or Death from smoking, alcohol addiction, suicides makes the data very unreliable. or the author told that he only started to feed the people in 3 years of the last stage of the study. So the length of the study was cut down from 8 to 3 should I trust a 3 year study on mental patients who behaviors are often unpredictable and there are lots of self-harm? u believed it? still on the high fat diet? have any chest pains or heart attack yet?

Alphacause, you don't always have to buy the priciest meat. I can get 1 pound of nitrate free bacon pieces for $3 at one of the health food stores. Local eggs are $3 a dozen. Give up Starbucks, soda, pizza, fast food, movie popcorn, vending machine snacks, breakfast cereal and the rest of the junk food. That's a lot of savings. You also have to factor in medical cost of being fat and sick. How much is that worth? How much is being slim and full of energy worth?

I tried the Atkins diet and going into ketosis is horrible... after one workout session while in ketosis I realized that I had no energy and I couldn't stand the smell of my own sweat. from what I remember my sweat kinda smelled like urine but strong....Once the smell hit me I just figured that the diet couldn't be healthy....

samuel lopes I tried cutting all my carbs back too and felt like I was going to die by the third day. But instead of giving up I did some research and realized that I wasn't doing a ketogenic diet correctly. 1. You are basically breaking a sugar addiction and need to eat as much fat as you can to help send signals to your brain that you wish to change your metabolism. 2! You must increase salt intake a little bit to prevent a low blood pressure. It's been two years since I first tried this way of eating and I'm telling you not only is it safe but it's actually going to make you so much healthier in every way conceivable. As a novice you are really not supposed to workout right away. It can take up to several weeks to become fully adapted.

samuel lopes Well I have so I don't know what to tell you. Humans have been on a high fat low carb diet for 2.5 million years. I've done a ton of research bro. And I will continue to do so. Just stay away from trans fats, and sugars and you'll be doing better then most. Harvard is finally admitting that not only are sat fats not bad for you, but that they are good! Think about the huge food companies that benefit from telling people to not eat sat fat (eat carbs.) Pepsi-Cola funds medical institutions as well trying to cover up the truth. They literally pay doctors to tweet stuff in their favor. Not all calorie's are created equal. In the year 1800 there was a study looking at Native American diets and health. They found that they were extremely healthy and they ate a HFLC diet. You got to consider also that most humans as most animals have evolved to go through periods of not eating. Our bodies can store about 2 days of energy from glucose where as ketones from fat can store a potential 2 weeks or more AND you don't feel hungry. But what do I know.

"Carbohydrates are entirely irrelevant [...] are not particularly relevant" You seem to be contradicting yourself. How, specifically, would "red meat" cause, or stimulate, the growth of cancer? Lewis Cantley has shown how carbohydrates stimulate the growth of cancer, but not "red meat". How, specifically, would "red meat" cause CVD? Is there something *in* "red meat" that causes CVD? If so, what is it?

Those who forget history are destined to repeat it. During the Ice Age, winter was as long as 7 months! Cro Magnon men, women and children ate meat, meat and more meat. We are hybrids. We can run on carbs or fat, but we do much, much better on fat. Eating carbs is like burning leaves. The fire only lasts a short time. Eating fat is like burning logs, the energy is steady, even and lasts a long time. Paleo on carbs is not paleo. How could our survival depend on carbs that we NEVER ate?
