Hello Skaters! Welcome Back! Today I am going to do my best to help you understand the International Judging System, which was put in place in 2006. This system is all about accumulating points so each jump, spin, footwork sequence and maneuver is given a quantifiable base value that skaters can work off of. Judges then grade each elements 'grade of execution' or GOE, to determine each element's point value. For a complete break down of the base value of each maneuver you can head to this page on the US Figure Skating site...

This scoring system is fairer than the old one but must still be improved. I don't think it's a good idea that a daring routine with badly executed or failed quad jumps can win over an overall reasonably difficult, clean and beautiful routine. It takes the beauty and the art out of the sport. And the high scoring for quad jumps ruins young female talents badly, as we have seen and continue to see in Russia. The score for quads must definitely be lowered and / or scores that concern the overall execution must be raised. I know the latter takes away from objectivity, but really are the judges objective now? No they aren't. The whole process of recruiting judges must be changed too. Only then will we have the chance to see fair competitions.

Thanx Julia for your interesting insight on the Judging System. In light of your assessment and with regard to Figure Skating being a "subjective sport" what is your perspective as a professional on Kamila Valiewa and Anna Shcherbakova on the one hand and Sasha Trusova on the other? In particular, Sasha having the more athletic approach and presentation of the three and perhaps a less preppy artistic presentation. However, if she stands all of these incredible quad-jumps and a triple Axel she should be uncatchable due to the technical score alone, even if Kamila, again, stuns us all with the breathtaking magic she does on ice. Or would it be possible to reduce points for artistic presentation so massively in a fair manner that Kamila would win? How much - fair - margin for judging is left? Or is the future of figure skating set?

My daughter and I support Chock/ Bates and Hubbell/ Donahue. We watched a miniseries On Edge and fell in love with the teams that participated in the series. My daughter attributed roles to us , I am an alien (Madison Chock) and she is a beautiful girl (Madison Hubbell). So we have to dance on the floor pretending we are competing. She's 5 but it is adorable to see her perform an ice dance in front of the TV and root for her favorite team.

Is it still true that the highest and lowest score are excluded to make it less corruptive? Are the actual rules written rules (like how many rotations in a position etc) freely available somewhere? For the untrained eye it is very difficult to break down footwork and transition elements. What could be the best way to better understand it? Can you do a video where you break down let's the Olympic champions footwork into smaller elements? I love your channel, please keep going, because I learn so much about figure skating as a competitive sport and also can use your tutorials for my hobby skating.
@CoachJulia

I love the idea of breaking down olympic step sequences! I will work on that. Yes, the highest and lowest still get thrown out to keep corruption at bay. If you look in the description of this video you will find a link to a page that has quite a few of the values listed, ie how many rotations, etc. But a lot of the rules are in coaches handbooks, and are also in the yearly required testing that coaches have to maintain.

it feels like the +5-5 system is turning into the new 6pt system. and pcs seems irrelevant to the judges now. more quads =higher pcs apparently
@CoachJulia

We need to return to the 6.0 system. As is the judges can over or underscore participants. Return to the old judging system, which is more fair.

The Olympics women single competition. Why the 5 quads couldn’t win the gold? I love all of them.
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 2 жыл бұрын
Because skating is about more that just quads. That skater didn't have high enough scores in other areas to bring her to the top. It is important for skaters to have a well balanced program, and not just quad heavy. Plus, if there are mistakes made, that will bring the score down.
@sgsmozart

The system awards too many points to quad jumps. It has destroyed the artistry of figure skating. The time has come to seriously limit the number of triple or quad jumps allowed in a program. Now we have young juveniles doing these difficult elements and seriously injuring their bodies.
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 2 жыл бұрын
I could not agree more! I miss the artistry of older skating and a so sad for these young athletes who will likely have to undergo hip surgery at a young age.

Yeah, look what happened at Sochi! The obviously better skater, seriously, I watched break downs of Yuna’s textbook jumps, over the Russian skater who didn’t even execute her lutz- it was a flip! Yet, Yuna was robbed of her Gold because of this scoring system. Unbelievable

@@icedcat4021 but there is! They can go over the recording and see if the jumps and sequences were executed correctly. Like, was the Lutz, salchow or loop actually executed? How was the form? We’re they over rotated?

I didnt know there was a "fight" about figure skating not being considered a sport as opposed to a performing art until I started as an adult 3 years ago (I'm 36). I've heard the difference is if there is a judging system. Most sports pretty much play themselves with officials to make sure fouls are called or people cheating doesn't happen. I don't think it is good for the mental health of the athletes to be held to such subjective perfectionist standards. The sport already obviously has tons of eating disorders in both sexes. There also are fairly sexist elements left in just like there are in gymnastics, which is ironic because both sports have higher numbers of LGBT, at least on the men's side. Examples: men's floor gymnastics doesn't have choreography or music. Men can't do beam. Women can't do high bar or parallel bars. Ice sports: women have to wear elaborate costumes, smile, wear white boots. Men have to wear black boots. If we smile too much we are gay or crazy. We already get enough looks from the hockey guys. We have to dance to music. We have to dance with a female partner if we do pairs or ice dance...even though it is pretty obvious the male partner is often very gay. Not sure why we have a whole month of corporate Pride month and all these promotions of gay firsts this month but some sports or performing arts are in ice age. We have yet to have a male transition to female to ruin the women's figure skating like it did in swimming. But she probably wouldn't be as flexible as a bio female. Not sure why we can't just enjoy figure skating how people want to show it rather than having to create testing and standards for it. E. G. I think Adam Rippon is a better artist than Nathan Chen even tho he doesn't jump the same. And I speak all this as a fairly politically conservative person who is fine with LGBT other than teaching kids about drag queens and trans in kindergarten.
