Who would have thought my favorite youtubers would up and decide to make a video together? These are all excellent by the way. I loved seeing the different takes each person had on a subject played back to back. What an incredibly interesting watch.

Ian, you forgot about the 17th century Savoyard type helmets. Those closely resemble the skull shaped bad guy helm and can even be more nightmarish and bizzare. Their face protection parts are also more flat than in previous helmets. Really, look it up. It's a fascinating topic, and one I'm really looking forward you cover someday, because this stuff is so obscure, that almost non existant on the internet, despite it's popularity in the period.

Excellent job, guys! I love the fact that some of my favorite Medieval-themed KZfaqrs made a collab together. I am surprised, though, that in discussing the accuracy of the armor as a whole no one mentioned that the armor portrayed is from the 15th Century while the movie itself is set in the so-called Dark Ages.

Well that was too obvious to mention I guess Also the armor portrayed is from no century at all, although it does draw inspiration from late-15th and 16th century armors.

As to big front gates, there ARE quite a lot of examples, as long as you're thinking about outer walls- especially where it encloses a small town. You needed large gates there to accommodate the flow of traffic and commerce, as well as the largest things you might be bringing through like building supplies.

It's not a castle gate, but Westgate in Cantebury is large enough for a doubledecker bus to drive under. There are also some fortress gates in India which were big enough for an elephant to walk through.

Couple of interesting points on the video, +Knyght Errant : 1 Crazy Helmets: The Samurai might be the best example of this, just because many of their masks and crests were very fancy. Knights did have a lot of great crests too, of course. 2 Parade Armour: As you'll recall from the Knight and the Blast Furnace, ironically parade armours were sometimes better armour than combat armours. It was a better quality steel (because the other smiths got lazy), and the smiths who made most of it were very skilled indeed. Many of the parade armours and helmets would, I expect, be fine to take into battle, though the more unusual ones may have some weaknesses in their design.
@duchessskye4072
@duchessskye4072 6 жыл бұрын
There is a fine reason they wont - it's because even though the steel is top shape the shape of the armor is not really made to fight in. It would impose restrictions that general armor doesn't and would end up getting you killed

I have seen several gars that ware modified (shrinked) in later times. You see different stones used to make the opening smaller. Many from the 10-12-chentory had gats where you cold ride in with your upright lance. Later the changed that and the even made some gats narrower, but all lower. Somehow I get the idea (read that?) that it was not allowed to make the gats lower, because the King should never be forced to lower his lance. Here in town is a ruin of a castle that had a water gate big enough that a ship could sail in! The walls of the main tower were stronger than 12m. I guess that would fall under you über or uber- castles.

I would be more inclined to call it a palace seeing that it doesn't have any fortifications, functional or asthetic. Previous versions of the palace were certainly castles, but this last iteration was built in the 18th century.

Shadiversity I know that, but there are fragments of fortifications, like the gate behind st. Georges basilic. Also around that gatehouse is wall with crenelations and a tower in the corner. And about that rebuilding I know, but mentioning it because of its history I think is worth. By the way I am from Czech republic. Thanks for reading

I wonder if there's shots where you can see the reflection of the crew and camera(s) in the armor. If I could criticize, I'd point out that a lot of the armor is *so* shiny it looks like aluminum, which is probably what it's actually made of, but makes it difficult for me to view it as armor. So I kind of prefer the overall effect of the kind of scruffy looking, darker armor that you see more earlier in the film, and consistently on the bad guys. But I understand why the knights of Camelot have super-shiny costumes in their prime, it's to make them look rich. For a while I thought that the shininess of the armor was supposed to imply that it was silver-plated, but then Percival's armor gets rusty over the course of some scenes, meaning it's uncovered steel, so the shine is just stylistic.
@KnyghtErrant
@KnyghtErrant 7 жыл бұрын
The armor in the movie specifically doesn't really look like real polished armor because the color is off. Like you said, it looks like aluminum. Stainless steel is usually given away by it's color as well, the chromium makes it look too white. Carbon steels, even when polished bright, usually have a grayer quality to them.
@maddockemerson4603
@maddockemerson4603 7 жыл бұрын
Hey, I think that's the first time a channel replied directly to my comment. Cool. I posted just before watching the video where one of you talks about the polish of the armor, so maybe it would have been more appropriate there. Also, I avoided watching these as they were posted because I thought they might contain spoilers, (just saw it on HBO a few hours ago) which it sorta, almost did, if the audience really knows *nothing* about the Arthurian legends to where they don't know that Arthur and Mordred kill each other at the end, they might not want to be shown that part. But generally, there was nothing too specific to the movie that was revealed in these videos. I appreciate that.

Here is my question For as long as I've been a lover of Arthurian lore (which I am.) I've long wondered if Camelot is the name of Arthur's kingdom or just the castle? If Camelot was a kingdom/city, did it have houses for the villagers inside or outside the walls
@KnyghtErrant
@KnyghtErrant 7 жыл бұрын
In most stories, Camelot refers to the castle and court of King Arthur. He's the King of Britain, but sometimes in some versions of the story, Camelot is more loosely interpreted as his whole Kingdom.

Castles were build for defense: if you take Hochosterwitz in Austria: it has 14 ! fortified gates, one after the other circled around and up a mountain. Build to be easy to defend and (without artillery) frustrating to attack. So no big gates for real castles. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hochosterwitz_Castle#/media/File:Hochosterwitz_01052004_04.jpg

Well of course none of the armor is historically accurate because armor like that didn't exist in the 6th century. I think Excalibur has lots of problems (the utterly inane screenplay being the main one), but to be fair to Boorman, the film is purposely set in a mythical Britain, one that someone from the late 15th century (ie when Le Morte d'Arthur was written) might have imagined.
@gorazdvahen492
@gorazdvahen492 6 жыл бұрын
I have to admit this is painful to watch. Excalibur should either be considered a fantasy flick like LOTR or GoT, or a disastrously inaccurate semi-historic film. To understand the film one just has to know one thing about it: Hollywood. If Arthur ever lived it was around 500 AD, almost a thousand years before the weapons and armour in the film. Guys, you know this, at least some of you. Does anyone ever mention this? I can't be bothered to watch the whole thing so if you do, I apologise. To anyone interested in King Arthur I recommend a book trilogy by no other than Bernard Cornwell: The Winter King, Enemy of God and Excalibur. www.amazon.com/Winter-King-Arthur-Books/dp/0312156960
