From the sound of it you actually DO understand what's so great about the laptop. I think the title of that last video was the problem. I haven't even finished that video yet but I think that this video should have come out instead. You did a good job addressing the responses and a fair and non-antagonistic manner. Thanks for making this response.

You managed to gloss over the problem while explaining the problem simultaneously. The reason why people mentioned apple and not the 90% of products that aren't Apple is because apple is the world's most valuable company, so other businesses are going to take note of what they do that enabled that. For instance, after they got rid of the headphone jack, most Android phones got rid of it too. When the world's most valuable company became that way by being the most anti-consumer, it spells doom for us all because companies don't care about us, they care about money, and they see that Apple made the most by being anti-consumer. They're going to start mimicking the bad stuff.

Reality check, Apple's pc market is only 8%. they contribute nothing but anti trust practices that other companies follow since Apple gets to get away with it for way too long. I'm hoping the EU strangle holds that sham of a company and exposes their flim flammery out to the public.

I noted on the previous video that I sensed (a lot of) cynicism and I'm glad to see a more levelheaded approach. (And the Jinjer shirt. That's always a plus.) Thing is, I don't know what I expect from Framework, all I know is that I'll be fucked to buy a new laptop again because the charge port broke or there's a spot on the screen or something equally menial. Maybe that requirement makes it a niche. But I also think it's important for all trends to have a counter-example; as Linus said, companies got away with shitting on electronic right-to-repair because they were able to use their product's design to justify it, and I think it's important that there's a product now that fits into that category (ultrabooks, I guess) with a radically different internal design and business approach. It's important for options to just _exist_, that's where change has to start - change is still a long way away (if ever), but without options, there surely won't be any.

I believe that Framework is a conception capable of causing a radical shift in what is important to many people hoping for a change and hopefully more and more people to come as creativity gets rejuvenated and new innovations that are ethical and fair arise to consumers. It's an idea who's time has come. Thanks for the episode.

I hope this comment finds you well :) Here's the thing about this "vocal niche market". When I am asked by my friends or family which laptop should they buy, I'm going to immediately spout the word Framework. Why, because when it breaks or they need a new one they are coming to me to fix it (with no labour charge). It isn't about how end-user repairable it is; it's about the ease of repairability/upgradability. Further, I want two display ports on my laptop. That's one of the first things I'm going to try when I get mine.

This is exactly what I plan to do for every one of my luddite family members who's isn't remotely interested in the latest tech as long as it works. I immediately bought Framework's latest batch the moment I saw my brother's cracked screen on his 10 year old laptop and looked up what was involved in replacing just his display. No thank you . He breaks Framework's display, I know exactly where to go and know for sure it won't be a chore to fix it while not costing an arm and a leg.

-I bought a framework with the trackpad issue. I think the issue was allegedly that the connector could be pulled free, though for mine, it was rigidly seated, despite quite a bit of jostling by me. "Fixing" it took 5 minutes. -Bad thermal paste: I read that the issue was only with a couple of review units and that end users were not affected. -Audio buzzing: I didn't hear about this and I didn't notice anything. -Bad CPU: I use Linux (and not bloated Windows) so I'm unaffected by this. All it does is I guess make compiles take a bit longer. Day to day use I never get near to maxing out the CPU.
@CoilWhine
@CoilWhine 2 жыл бұрын
Idk, I checked the forums a lot about the issues and honestly they're relatively minor. Trackpad didn't seem too bad, though it probably sucked for the first couple of guys. Thermal paste is also easy enough to replace, it's not a _widespread_ issue, but it's got a decent forum thread. Buzzing audio is one of those issues that's been difficult to replicate from what I hear, but it might be some sort of grounding issue. I tried asking people about what chargers they were using and if it happened while on battery but it was mixed. CPU is what it is. I just feel like it's a mediocre generation from intel and it's frustrating because the next gen is going to be a significant increase (unlike the usualy 3-5% gen over gen improvements we've gotten used to). Overall it's not bad, I'm just waiting on the marketplace and pricing of the upgrades/spare parts to really decide if this is the answer to our problems or not. A repairable laptop isn't that useful if the parts aren't around or are too expensive. I don't think that'll be a problem but the continued delays on the marketplace launch make me uneasy. I hope you enjoy it, I'm just personally waiting on a gen2 or 3 when it's a bit more refined (and when my laptop gets too slow). Thanks for the watch and the comment. What distro are you running btw?

Gotta say you're 100% dead on with how businesses work. When I was in college I worked at a place that was using PCs so old and the hard drives were so small most of the engineers had bought external hard drives to do their jobs. They absolutely refused to upgrade anything as long as it still worked. Heck they didn't replace the vibration amplifier I used until the company that made it literally refused to do any repair work on it. (That bad boy was so old some of the circuits still used vacuum tubes) and most companies view IT the same way they view QA. It dosent produce product so it's viewed as overhead and they wanna keep overhead to a minimum.

when it comes to corporate it's all about the bottomline. Imagine an IT department having the ability to cheaply repair parts over time instead of adding to the e-waste of outdated equipment. instead of the pc maker swapping out devices it would be cost effective as well as time efficient to have a company department to do the same with very little training. Especially if the department requires certified staff.

You're probably associating with tech-centric circles. If I show this to my mom, my boss, my brother, etc they won't care. They just go "it looks kinda like my mac" and that's it. Techies love to take their stuff apart, as do I. We're just a giant block of the market. We're a vocal _minority_. It's why phones are glued together slabs of glass without SD cards or replaceable batteries. Everyone wanted "premium" materials and "water resistance" so the manufacturers complied. I prefer a plastic phone myself but it's just not a common enough preference to find a high end phone with plastic, replaceable battery, AOSP, unlockable bootloader, SD card slot, headphone jack, etc. I'd love for it to happen, but there's not enough of us for samsung to care. Oneplus pretended to care but now they make the same crap as everyone else. That's the way the market works. As for getting my hands on one, I don't really need to spend 1k on a 4core laptop. I already have one and I've already used a device with the 1165g7. It's not that impressive and I wouldn't spend that kind of money on one personally. I'll wait for ryzen or alder lake, and I'll wait until I only have to buy DDR5 once and be able to transfer that to future upgrades if I feel the need. Seriously, Alder lake is going to smoke these CPUs and it's unfortunate that the framework is launching so close to the alder lake release. Take it as you will, these are just my thoughts and my experiences working with people that aren't very tech savvy.

It does feel tough. I’m all for right to repair, but there are blatant compromises by going for the laptop. Limited options, there seems to be a premium price for it (1k for an i5 is hefty) and the gamble that if framework fails, it’s not that repairable. This is at the opportunity of saving $150 for an mba or a new version in 6 months. I’m really hoping they figure it out because I want to give them my money. My only other gripe is that, I hope it’s not futile due to the general public and their attitude of not caring.

I buy used Thinkpads. With a good SSD and the right amount of RAM I see zero difference in my workflow between an old and a new processor and I am totally confident that machine processors will do the job for me in 2 years, 5 years or 10 years from now. Framework has one thing that's better than the big pc makers. No GLUE. Your argument about the average user not caring about hardware, guess what, they don't give a squat what cpu is in a laptop unless it's intel. Chances are Intel chips made the most sense and to risk developing a new business model based on secondary parts like AMD, not a good idea. Especially when thunderbolt is native to Intel chips which happens to be the basis to their modularity design. If u had a choice to make a phone between Qualcomm or Exynos, which would be the most likely better business decision to develop for? I currently got their batch 6 shipment and the initial issues i have yet to experience except one design flaw when screwing the chassis back on, Don't over tighten the screws or you will find that the power button can't be pressed to shut off the laptop. This can be easily fixed by using longer screws so that it would be harder to over tighten the keyboard deck back on.
@CoilWhine
@CoilWhine 2 жыл бұрын
Few things to say, though I'm generally done with this product (I've replied to dozens of comments). Your first point is kind of contradictory. You claim that there's no glue (good!) but average user's don't care about performance. Who is this marketed to exactly? The average user cares more about ingress protection, weight, and frame rigidity than the existence of glue, and glue really helps with those characteristics. AMD parts aren't this crazy new concept from a nobody either, they're quite good and are more efficient than this generation of intel parts. Alder lake may be a different story, but this was not a good generation vs AMD in a restricted power envelope. I mentioned thunderbolt in the video, the reason is likely because of that + a decent discount as those CPUs are going to be replaced quickly by the 12th gen parts for most big OEMs. Thunderbolt is a big question for me though since there's been no addons that utilize it outside of an external GPU dock. I'm hoping there's some cool use cases out there but I haven't seen any yet. The comparison between Qualcomm and Exynos is actually really funny, because mediatek is being sold faster than either of those. www.notebookcheck.net/MediaTek-is-found-to-have-taken-its-biggest-share-of-the-mobile-SoC-market-ever-for-the-second-quarter-of-2021.568605.0.html I'm glad that your batch *6* unit is well built, by then the issues should have been resolved or I'd be quite concerned about their QC department.

@@CoilWhine My contradiction is my point. Although glue has been the excuse of making ultra thin and rigid devices, the proof of concept to Frameworks design shows it's not necessary. AMD has shown they have improved their silicon in the lastest generations of their chip but compared to Intel, they still have an uphill battle recuperating their reputation to the mainstream public. Framework is still a startup and they need to stick to a business leader to be recognized as a legit company. To go into using a tarnished brand such as AMD is a risk no matter how much better the chip is compared to the standard it's competing against. Regarding thunderbolt, it's an intel licensed ip. Using an intel platform should be easier to have this port certified. Would you know what hoops is involved to certify this port on an AMD platform? Is there an equivalent for compatibility considering as U claim even thunderbolt is iffy as a standard regulated to a few accessories. How many egpus are using the usb spec btw? I knew you was gonna mention Mediatek which I purposely did not include in the comparison and you realize the comparison is really analogous to Intel & AMD. Samsung has been pushing really hard to be competition to Qualcomm but Mediatek is only more popular to the industry it's marketed to which is barely the US market and usually regulated to what is perceived by the consumer market as Chinese knock offs or kickstarter campaigns. Until we start seeing a flagship device using a Mediatek chip, it a non-argument. Huawei doesn't count until they can actually be sold globally. Lastly I agree QC needs to ramp up their standards but any quirks overlooked is possibly due to them being relatively new to this type of business model. I'm giving them a pass for now. My screen doesn't wobble when open as the earlier batches I've seen in reviews but I'm surprised no one has mentioned in their reviews the screwing the chassis too tight issue even though the company's instructions simply mentions in passing as this is a known glitch in design. For a company that should have a lot of growing pains, I think it's looking promising they will mature to a competitive pc maker in no time. I can't wait for them to make a 15 inch equivalent version with discrete graphics instead of compromising with a device with an apu. I'm thinking a thunderbolt style daughter board inside a larger chassis while keeping the same design of their current 13 inch board (for upgradable options to current buyers). I can see the port being a pass through for I/O and the larger chassis offering more room for a bigger battery. Yeah, I know it's a pipe dream but the possibilities are there.

ill say it again, but slower. its half the price.. and has the same amount of cores. Just like how there are other laptops out there that are equally as serviceable (no qr codes boo hoo) with twice as many cores. I know it upsets you buddy, we all wanna see framework succeed but 4 cores in a $1000 laptop is a joke.

@@CoilWhine i'll say it again too but slower: e c o n o m y o f s c a l e And hey list those laptops here. Lets see how truthful your claims are of those laptops that are equally serviceable with no voiding of warranty upon user's tinkering right out of the box. List starts here:

Well similar to your car comparison, an important factor for a car is maintenance quality, which I’d equate to a computer’s repairability. I don’t care how nice a car is, if I have to get a completely new engine due to a broken spark plug, that car is both useless to me and way too expensive in the long run (I’m obviously exaggerating but you get the idea). Too many people just check the face value price and don’t consider the miscellaneous costs.

I love how you stated that Apple is in a league of it's own. Truth is, the problems the products have are rare. While it seems like there is a lot of issues, people forget the scale of all the sales they have.... they sell so many devices that the problems are a minority in comparison. Their products often last a long time and survive well... Which is why they can get away with what they do. They have quality and their products are more fairly priced than people would like to admit (seeming to be expensive when looked at a bias perspective). It's a quality product for a good price from a fairly reliable company. The horror stories we hear are often such a small minority that they kinda don't matter. And that's what allows Apple to dominate and mess with these anti consumer practices. Because to most consumers, the quality and reliability of Apple products are so good, they don't need to worry about it.

This is just straight up not true. Go look at some of Louis Rossman's videos documenting some of the terrible engineering that Apple has gotten away with (he's most well known for right to repair but he has outlined issues with their designs before). Apple has tried to sweep those issues under the rug multiple times and only offered replacements when class action lawsuits were filed. Apple is also a very big status symbol brand and people are more willing to disregard the faults when they are also buying the product for social reasons.

the only thing wrong is the pricing. $1000 for i5 11th is unacceptable. people are using 2012 macbooks to this day, so if you buy a m1 macbook right now, it will last for ages with no need to upgrade, and its cheaper, lighter, thinner, much faster and double or even triple the battery life. if only it came with a ryzen 7 5800u for the same price it would be amazing

Except the m1 MacBook has an excessive use ssd use issue from launch (Don’t know if it’s fixed) and there is no way to replace the ssd even if you opened it.

I appreciate that you liked it, I just had to take it a bit slowly since the prior video required a significant follow-up. There's a _lot_ of interest in this laptop and a lot of newer faces getting on board. Felt like I had to go over some stuff a bit more thoroughly than I normally would've liked to. I'm still working on scripting videos out a bit better as well, thanks for the feedback!
