This video is part one of a two part series on this channel with ‪@TheLastBacon‬. Be sure to check out his part of the series here: • Explaining the SCIENCE...
Now, when each and every one of us made it to the Lava Zone location in Subnautica for the first time, it’s pretty safe to say we were all a little surprised. How is there magma underwater? Why doesn’t it boil the surrounding water? These were only a few of the questions pertaining to the lava zone we all likely wondered. And it turns out, there are scientific answers to these questions. Today, we’re going to be exploring the science behind the Lava Zone in Subnautica, and answering some of the questions you may have about it...
Another interesting note I forgot to mention in this video is this: If you're reading this, let me know in the comments section, so I know. It is also possible that the mass of 4546B, being different from that of Earth, would change the pressure deep in the ocean of the planet allowing for such high temperatures. Just an interesting thought I wish I included in the video.

Highly unlikely, the game has plenty of common minerals sedimentary rocks that can only originated from terrigenous rocks common here in our planet. Sandstone and quartz, specifically, are a proof that the geology of 4546b is similar to ours - in fact, all of the rocky planets on our solar system and also many asteroids and comets are pretty much made out of a few select minerals. Our planet has a greater diversity of rocks because it suffered diferentiation through time, something that does not seem to occur on 4546b given it has a practically neglectable landmass coverage. Nerded out pretty hard right here, sorry.

Hey, I came here from The Last Bacon and I really like your concepts! Maybe do one about kyanite? It’s a mineral found in mineral veins of sedimentary rock (rock that was created by constant pressure), but the lava zones’ rocks should be igneous (formed when lava is cooled down). Maybe you could explain that as well?
@SpeedyMouse
@SpeedyMouse 3 жыл бұрын
I'll put that on the list :)
@matheusviolante8364
@matheusviolante8364 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, kyanite does not occur in igneous rocks. In fact, the temperature of the lava zone is too high for that mineral to be chemically stable, it would probably be either andalusite or sillimanite. The devs just didn't choose it based on science, which is forgivable since diamonds don't occur on shale, copper is usually found in sulfide deposites, not carbonates, etc.
@norielsylvire4097
@norielsylvire4097 3 жыл бұрын
It is possible that the lava is covered in a film of colder material, a sort of crust, that doesn't transfer that much heat, however the water should still boil and lava should not shine this way, so most probably the devs got it wrong. Maybe the film or crust of colder magma and the cold ocean water from the river or the void equalizing the temperature works
@SpeedyMouse

That's a really interesting possibility and I think it's likely!

About the temperature mystery: It may be that the rock composition on 4546B has an abnormally low Specific Latent Heat, meaning that it requires lower energy input to melt that you would expect from rock, leading to cooler lava than on Earth. Additionally, the solute concentration in the water might be raising the water’s Specific Heat Capacity, meaning that it takes more energy input to raise its temperature. These two combined would mean that the lava is cool and has a hard time heating the water, leading to low temperatures of 70 degrees Celsius.

Another theory is that gravity could be higher thus creating higher pressure. This would then change the waters boiling point. Buoyancy is not affected by gravity explaining why submersible vehicles still work. The one flaw however is that we don’t notice this gravity difference while on land or in sea bases.

i'd like to put in this possibility; while the immediate gradient boils; the gas barrier reduces temperature via insulation; add on a few layers of sandwiched pressurized water and there you go. though; that would require at minimum a 10 meter cube volume divided into 1 meter sections to in theory buffer the heat; but i really dont know; thats what i think could be happening.

The vaporizing and condensing and the cold convection current theories are likely, however Alterra thermometers are extremely broken, as you find out in Below Zero, The P.R.A.W.N. Suit and Thermal Plant thermometers both say that the surface temperature ranges from 1-8°C, however, this is extremely inaccurate for three reasons. One, temperatures above 0°C do not support ice, so there wouldn't be any ice, and definitely not the ice shelves you see in-game. Two, the AEP you are wearing is rated for activity in temperatures above -10°C, so presumably you wouldn't lose body heat at all. Even without the AEP, it would be unlikely to die of hypothermia as quick as you do in 8°C. It definitely is significantly colder than the thermometer readings, as in what the thermometer says is 8°C, you can die of hypothermia with the AEP in 00:01:45. Yet another terrible safety feature of Alterran design.

Water boils at 99,974 °C, ambient temperature on these biomes is max 70. So it can't boil. Lava temperature is 1350-1400°C and it solidifies at temperatures of 600-800 ° C. In my opinion the water does boil. But we can't see it. (In fact water steam is invisible and thing that we see above water when we boil is is steam that is turning into liquid).

Hey, how about having the question of, how do ________ live? This could be a series of how certain creatures can live by using basic, or advanced biology, probably the bests results may come in a marine-biological answer, by using known fish and comparing them to Subnautica’s creatures, you might be able to learn about how these work. Things like reapers and sea dragons would be an interesting 2.
