This video introduces the viewer to the transverse arch. It explains how all three arches of the foot are interrelated. The video also reveals some of the implications of both proper and poor biomechanics in relation to these arches.

Thank you so much!!!! 4 decades ago I remember an US Army doctor saying something about my transverse arches. “Collapsed” is the description I remember. This video confirms to me that my my memory is ~correct and now I can pursue treatment .

You make sense about the ball of the big toe not in contact. And I thought foot docs only used inserts and surgery. Respect to you. Combining this with what I have learned from the Upright Health KZfaq channel on feet has made this actionable. Thank you. (Note specifically Vincent who raised his own arch with exercises had 2 upright health videos, 2023)

Thank you so much, this video was great. I work at running shoes store and on a weekend shift i fit about 12-15 people easily per day. We have a scanner that gives us a tone of information such as arch height, instep height, ball width...etc. I will certainly add this into my fitting and not over correct the foot and fit based on flexibility of the transverse arch especially for insoles as well.

Is it possible to flatten the transverse arch so that all of the MTPJs are in alignment? On my good foot this is the case, but the transverse arch seems too arched on my problem foot.

Thanks for explaining! I got splayed feet and I thought it was healthy splay, but this is because of fallen transverse arches. Resulted in tailor bunions and maybe some neuromas. My metarsal heads are more pronounced. Is it possible to rebuild and strengthen the transverse arch with exercises?

I am not a believer that exercises alone can rebuild and strengthen a compromised transverse arch. Thanks for your comment.

Thanks for this... I was told I have a "dropped metatarsal arch"... I started using Dr. Scholls' arch support inserts (half size, not full, like $8-9 per pair), which helped me walk without pain... then they stopped making them so I stopped buying them, of course. I went to another podiatrist and HE said there's no such thing as a dropped metatarsal arch... but that he would sell me a different orthotic for $500 (which ain't hay)... he added that it wasn't him: he'd sold his practice to a hospital group (there's an ongoing epidemic of this bushwa currently laying waste to the medical profession) and it was THEY who were going to charge me a small fortune for this 49 cent piece of plastic; not him. Anyway I started to say that was too much but before I even got the whole sentence out of my mouth he was already leaving the examining room and with a jaunty- "well good luck! ," and he was gone. So doc: is there such a thing as a dropped metatarsal arch? And any further thoughts on what can be done about it, if anything?

Dr Dave are you taking patients?? Who do I need to get help with this issue because my podiatrist is not helping me. This sounds like exactly what I have but can get through to my podiatrist.

If I were looking for a podiatrist who should also understand this concept I would find a doctor who strongly believes in Sole Support orthotics. The website has a provider search for that purpose. www.solesupports.com.
