As a lay minister, I have to say this is the most theological/biblical sermon/lesson I have listened to regarding this subject. I don't know what "Second Selected Passages" is, I'll have to look that up. Other than that, I am happy to see that a pastor/preacher is trying to do the right things by saying the right things and being within biblical bounds. Mr. Batchelor has obviously taken the time to research this subject, used scripture to back up this subject, and gave the lesson with love. I am, from a lay minister's point of view, have found comfort in my soul and mind that perhaps not all pastors/preachers have lost their minds.

Pastor Batchelor I do understand and believe you are a born again Christian man of God and that makes you my brother in Christ. You do quote several scriptures that deal with speaking in tongues as recognized human languages. I absolutely accept that. To be honest I do come from a charismatic background but I have questioned some practices in some of the churches I have attended. It is absolutely true that some of these practices are out of order within the church. Paul gives us clear instruction in Corinthians regarding that matter. Being a learned man of God I know you probably have better understanding regarding biblical interpretation than I, but the scripture directly speaks of talking alone with God speaking mysteries by the spirit. In 1 Corith 14:5 from my laymans perspective it seems that the Apostle Paul is encouraging believers to speak in tongues, but he would rather we prophesy. My question is this. Does speaking in tongues when you are alone with God exist in scripture? I beg your indulgence with another question as I am desperately trying to find a "denomination/movement" to call home. My final question regarding scripture is this: It seems as though Paul had similar issues with the church at Corinth during his time. How do you reconcile 1 Corinthians 14: 14-15 which seems to indicate that Paul says that when he prayed in tongues his spirit prayed". Does this mean that the author of the majority of the new testament is babbling with the spirit the enemy? I believe as members of universal church , "The Body of Christ" we need to be very mindful and consider our words very carefully when discipline is applied to the entire body of Christ. It causes division and strife within the body when these messages are made public. I do understand that you must determine your own interpretation of the scriptures but I believe the scripture is very clear that all discipline should be given in a spirit of love. Especially considering the complete body of Christ as this is a public message and not a message contained within the confines of your denomination.

The bible says that tongues are for a sign to unbelievers. Also when you pray in tongues you pray to Father in Jesus name. The Bible clearly says that you were edifying yourself when you pray in tongues and that in public there should be an interpreter in one or two people should be speaking in tongues at a time in public with an interpreter or else the person who is excited and speaking in tongues she didn't become silent if there is no interpreter I pray in tongues it is a gift I asked God for this gift early on because a lot of my cousin I spoke in tongues and I love the way it sounded I was 15 and it felt powerful I loved what it felt like when they would pray for me I so full I felt complete it after having being prayed for in tons and the lord gave it to me and I've had ever since I'm 47 years old now is a gift certainly that can be developed or underdeveloped you can have diverse tongues where you can get stuck at the first time you spoke when you first spoke but if you pray in tongues all the time your tongues change they become fluent they become more diverse they become interchangeable I also asked for interpretation even when I'm alone I can interpret my own tongue it is an it a partial interpret interpretation and it takes time for it to come through the actual understanding I'm a working progress tongues are a working progress it is a gift that you work on it is a gift that you continue to use or it becomes less effective it's just like anything that you don't use for a while it becomes Rusty and when you pull it out to use it it's not as efficient same things with your tongues which reminds me I need to go pray in tongues right now excuse me

And as was mentioned by another commenter....the unknown tongue that is to God, where does that fit? Im asking sincerely because it appears there is a tongue not unto man but also unto God. Id be standing on dangerous ground saying all tongues are for men to hear the gospel when the text says there is an unknown tongue not unto men but unto God. How do we harmonize this with the spreading of the gospel?

I was curious about the reference to the tongues or languages of angels that I found in 1 Corinthians 13:1, thanks. 1 Corinthians 14:14, some Bibles get translated 'my mind is unfruitful'. My NIV Bible says that. I suppose it should be 'the minds of others are unfruitful'?

+Tumealicious21 it's an odd one because through translation chinese whispers, the meaning has changed from "I am unintelligible to those around me", to "I am unintelligible to myself" It's just like in Mark 7:19 where in some Bibles it seems permission is given to eat the unclean animals. (Yes, but if I take it in its context I don't get to enjoy this delicious bacon and egg baguette, and later, lobster for dinner!)

The fact fractions of Christianity are so divided speaks volumes in my humble opinion. We dont know everything we think we know, we arent the authors of truth, God is, and He revealsbto whom he will and the widespread division on this topic and many ither basic truths leads me to believe that we all have bits and pieces of truth so its our job to look into the 12 baskets full of the remains of the 2 fish and 5 loaves and see where we end up when the true judge shows up on the scene. In the meantime come and let us reason together and consider one another rather than ridicule, bite, and devour another

Pastor Doug Bachelor use to pastor the Waterflow Christian Center before it became the Waterflow Seventh Day Adventist church. Anyway he mentions that the Navajos use peyote or hallucinogenic and hollow all night long which isn't true. He says that they speak in strange tongue which isn't true either or roll around. The truth is I use to go to these peyote rites, and I know what went on. There was no speaking in tongues or rolling around, it was done in a orderly fashion. I use to go to these ceremonial rite, don't go there no more.

Pastor Doug Batchelor, I agree with everything you're saying. However these spiritual gifts are given to the church to profit us. But if the church is not teaching these gifts, how are the Body of Christ to be aware that they can have the awareness which gift they have? Similarly, the healing of Jesus is for the church. But if the church fails to teach this, i.e. hold healing services, would the Holy Spirit heal anyone? The answer is No! Jesus is more than A Saviour! Jesus is everything we believe Him to be! This is why He's our El-Shaddai. I'm saying this because many Adventists have died prematurely, when they could have been healed!

I didn't think this was that important, but I have a landlord that was put off the whole church/God/Jesus thing by the erroneous version of the gift of tongues. I might have to show him this video at some stage. My parents do it a bit (though praying quietly to themselves) but I could not pinpoint it in the Bible, and as I had not read much of the Bible back then, I assumed it was on one of the hundreds of pages I hadn't read. Interestingly I asked mum what language it is, and she said a heavenly prayer language, but didn't know what it meant.

I believe he is wrong speaking in tongues is a gift from God. GOD is speaking to you, but you are NOT to speak out loud unless there is someone to interpret what you are saying, if not you are to sit quietly not to speak. I do not have the scripture to write here at the moment but it's in the Bible. I also believe that some /many fake it there are going to answer for that. But there is truth to speaking in tongues. It is one gift from God. Look it up.......

I dont agree with the misuse of the gift in churches as they are going against 1 corinthians chap 14 worth reading for all christians but my point today is there is a personal tongue that paul speaks about it is in cjap 14 v 19 another point the pastor missed if they are only human languages to share the gospel with why is there a gift of interpretation do we have to interpret them back to another language so people understand no no there are divers kind of tongues 1 corn 12 v 10 he fails to mention this

Pr. Doug Batchelor, The lady was right when se said you're not baptised in the Holy Ghost, when you said you don't speak in tongues, As the Five Biblical accounts of people receiving the baptism in the Holy Ghost, Making tongues the Biblical evidence of the baptism in the Holy Ghost. If you were baptised in the Holy Ghost, You would know that feelings follow faith.Tongues come from our born again Spirits, 1 Cor 14: 14--15, NOT our heads. The gift of prophecy, ISN'T preaching or teaching. You don't half show you Biblical ignorance about tongues, when Paul talks about the need to speak in a tongue that people can understand in1 Cor 14: 9, He was talking about edifying the Church, 1 Cor 14: 9--12, But there are OTHER operations of tongues recorded in that same chapter. One of them is OUR SPIRIT PRAYING, v14--15, Which you come against.Paul said when he prays in tongues, it's his spirit praying and HIS understanding is unfruitful, NOTE the word, "MY", not the congregation. The disciples NEVER preached or taught in tongues, They spoke the wonderful works of God.When God gives a gift, such as tongues, He never takes the back, Your teaching is devil inspired and bring confusion to TRUE Bible seeking Christians. It's quite obvious that you aren't baptised in the Holy Ghost.

I had some familiarity with the so called 'speaking in tongues' when I was young and learning from the SDA's while my best friend had gotten involved with Pentecostal's tongues movement. It was easy for me to see through it back then as a non-authentic Bible practice. All it takes is a little bit of the right information from a good Bible teacher or book, and your own human noggin reasoning powers! Boy! what a deception! even though to my knowledge my friend never practiced it and eventually left the Pentecostals behind, after some frank discussions on the topic of speaking in tongues.

Where does it say in the word of God that tongues are done away with? You cannot tie in the tongues at Pentecost in Acts 2 with the gift of tongues in 1Corinthians 14. You must study the Word of God with spiritual eyes. JESUS SAID: It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.." John 6:63. The tongues that were given to the disciples at Pentecost were to be used to preach the gospel to the JEWS from other nations. "And there were dwelling at Jerusalem JEWS, devout men, out of every nation under heaven." Acts 2:5. These tongues were FOR MEN TO UNDERSTAND! "And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? ActsS 2:8 The gift of tongues that was given to the Body of Christ through the Apostle Paul were to be used for PROPHECY or to speak ONLY TO GOD! " For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh NOT UNTO MEN, BUT UNTO GOD: FOR NO MAN UNDERSTANDTH HIM howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries." 1Corinthians 14:2. " Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my SPIRIT prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. "What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 1Corinthians 14:13-15 KJV. Furthermore, the gospel of the circumcision (the Jews) was given to Peter and the gospel to the uncircumcision (the gentiles) was given to the apostle Paul; "But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter; (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles." @ Pastor Doug : I have great respect for you and admire how you talked about Sabbath in a debate regarding it with another minister. But i totally disagree with you in this message regarding gift of tongues. (Starting from 23: 29) How come prophesy is equal to preaching..first of all you should not utter a word of teaching about gift of tongues as that's not your cup of coffee. Why are you twisting another biblical truth to play down the uniqueness of gift of prophesy? I advocate you first ask forgiveness to the Holy Spirit and fast & pray..maybe if God willing he will gift you the 'tongues' or prophesy and then you will realize the truth. The Truth will set you free and wherever the Holy Spirit abounds there is liberty (2 Corinthians 3:17)

Ok so I loved most of the amazing facts videos that I've seen but a few things he states kind of make me go ummm.....I'm not so sure about that...like I don't think Biblical matters that are up in the air because they could be interpreted in different ways should be decided with such unquestionable certainty. I.e. He said states that the term "sons of God " definitely means other created beings considered Gods children (in the same way born again believers are) exist somewhere out there in the universe. In addition somehow he manages to define the unpardonable of sin of blaspheming the Holy Spirit as the rejection of Christs salvation. So apparently in this video he says what we see in churches today (the strange speech emitted by worshippers) could likely be from unclean spirits . the prevalence of "speaking in tongues " is much too common to be attributed to fakery or demonic influence. Lastly he denounces dancing exuberantly /strange behavior (or something along those lines) in worship as being of he flesh. Well king David was a man after Gods own heart and that is exactly what he did. There had been other things he said that caused me to pause for a second but I cannot recall at the moment. This goes to show that no human is perfect God cannot be explained or put in a box by finite minds. And this is coming from Ellen g whites biggest fan. as Christlike as she was even she made very human mistakes which I'm sure anyone knowledgeable of her knows what those were.

First fore most why did he command the disciples to wait in the upper room? why would they need to hear the tounge in there own language when all were from the same region of Israel? The proof is the didn't. the power they were waiting on was the same power that rose God from the dead. Also why were they accused swing drunk at third hour of the day. they weren't they were filled with the dunamus power of the holy ghost a language that Satan can neither understand or interrupt it's between the child of God and there heavenly father. Unfortunately the Seventh day Adventist have some things right returned to God's commandments. The Sabbath as Saturday. I have a few well know I'll call them acquaintances because never once Did God manifest in the flesh out women over the church. Neither Ellen G White to hear her name at some there devices males my skin crawl it's as her words are greater than the Bible. I say this because we're not supposed to talk about our neighbors man if they'd let Ellen G White RIP and go with the power of the holy ghost they.would have a powerful ministry. But hasn't happened in many many years don't see it happening now. It sad because I see them selling themselves short.

I listen to the entire message and quite frankly it was hard for me to seat in and listen. The whole premise of the message was to discredit the part of tongues that is not understood by man. It’s funny how he read 1 Corinthians 14:1-2 but leave the part that says no man understand it because you are speaking to God. For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. He also said that Corinth was a booming seaport with a diversity of people with different languages and that Paul was saying they would have different speakers that would speak in the language or in their tongue so they were creating confusion. People of God stop that. That is not what the scripture is saying. Paul spoke about a spiritual tongue that needed interpretation, so you mean to tell me these people were only able to speak their home language and nothing else. You mean to tell me no one else in that group spoke that same language and if some did they couldn’t translate for those who couldn’t. Come on people that is logically impossible. How than did Paul converted and formed a church with people who couldn’t understand each other and only spoke their own language. I hope y’all see where I am going with this. I am sure he mean well but that is not what Paul was talking about. The unknown tongue was simply unknown. Jude talks about praying in our most holy faith because it build an edifice in us. But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost. That is meant for you and you alone not for others. Anyway I hope that help somehow.

What about 1Corinthians 14:2? I'm a tongue talker. And it is genuine and not that of devils. Just because someone can't interpret it doesn't mean it's false or evil. It is very real and anyone can receive it. Whether you belive it or not, is on you. It's a very strait and narrow path that leadeth unto salvation, meaning, most people will just discount it as jibberish and unnecessary. And contrary to belief, the majority of people do not believe in speaking in tongues. Being an Israelite that has had the experience, I know. Shalom

Most people come to God with their heads not with their hearts. To receive the Holy Spirit you must have a broken and repented heart. You have to be hungry. You can't have the attitude, if I don't receive it, I don't believe on it, and that's what most of them do. You must come to God with all your heart.

+David Martin I do have a response for 1 Corithians 14:2. Speaking in an unknown tongue/unknown language, is like speaking in a language not known to others. For instance, a preacher who goes to an English congregation and speaks Chinese is unknown to everyone but God. Only God knows what that person is saying, since God knows all language. What the rest of the passage says is that your only preaching( or edifying) to yourself if you do that. However, the purpose of speaking in tongues is to reach other people, so that others can understand what you're saying. So when you go to china and speak in English, you can pray that you speak in tongues that they understand. However, if you go to church and don't know hat you're saying, you have no idea if you're saying anything of value.

1 John 2:27 KJV But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. Why is he trying to force me to understand the scripture his way. He needs to focus on the sabbath. The teaching of speaking in tongue's is not his specialty. It seems like he's trying to make the scripture say something that is not. To receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in a tongue, you must have a broken and repented heart.

There are a lot of ministers who are creating their own religion. They take bits and Pieces from the Bible to make their point. Speaking in tongues is not natural. It is actually an Encrypted language. One person is speaking in tongues, two people next to each other may speak the same language, one of may understand what's being said while the other didn't understand a thing. The one that understood what was being said ear was open while the other did not. Speaking in tongues is a spiritual gift controlled by the Holy Spirit not by this know it all minister.

Johnny Marra His information is coming from the bible bro. How do you know that what you're saying is that of the holy spirit? How is it that an atheist can speak in tongues as well? Are you saying Jesus doesn't have the holy spirit because he didn't speak in tongues?
@johnnymarra67

Acts 2:6 KJV Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. The key word is "that every man heard them speak in his own language." It didn't say that they were speaking a specific language, but it looks like the miracle happened to the hearers. The speaker spoke, but didn't understand a thing. If you understand digital communication, you will understand this. People who never had the experience of speaking in tongues always have an issue with that. They try to make it a carnal thing, but they don't realize that it is spiritual.

The Bible never talked about most of Jesus prayers. She didn't have to because all of his prayers were holy and everything was Revealed to him. Our prayers are selfish. we need the Holy Spirit to intercede for us to fix our prayers so they can be accepted God. I heard a story of a missionary in the mission field who was about to be eaten by a bunch of cannibals tribe. This lady had an impression to pray in tongues. While she was playing, she had a vision she saw a man. About the same time the tribe leader Came to kill the missionary, he stepped out of his tent because he heard the tribes man. Suddenly the tribe people bow down before the missionary With fear. After the whole tribe got saved, the tribe leader said that when they saw giants with Swords standing with the missionary, they were afraid and thought that they going to die and thought that he was a god. Years later the missionary and a lady that was praying in tongues shared their testimony, they Realized all this things happened about the same time the lady was praying.

For the first time pastor Doug skipped other scriptures in the new testament that talks about tongues and focused on newspaper reports to push a narrative. this post is full of half truths and misconception. How come he didn't mention the fact that on the day of Pentecost that the people said that the apostles were DRUNK and peter had to explain to them about the holy spirit. How orderly is a drunken man?

Even the Jews called Jesus a drunkard yet he never sinned by getting himself drunk. The devil will always plant seeds of confusion. It's also besides the point that the "tongues" were known languages and not just ecstatic utterances without any meaning.

The definition of ad hominem is : 1. appealing to feelings or prejudices rather than intellect 2: marked by or being an attack on an opponent's character rather than by an answer to the contentions made The ad hominem attack on EG White and name calling on SDA show we are appealing to feeling or prejudices rather than intellect. I used to do this to their members until recently. However I have noted John Wesley holding a similar view with SDA in one of their beliefs and wondered why would I call them a cult without doing the same to Wesley. The last few months I have objectively delved into their literature and it's been an eye opener.

People Please read your Bible, Jesus is returning SOON, just look around. 1 Cor.14:1-5 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, *no one understands them*; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. One who speaks in a Tongue edifies himself, but one who prophesies edifies the Whole church. 1 Cor. 14:13-15 Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he my interpret. For if i pray in a tongue, my Spirit prays.

It is amazing to me that people today still do not understand speaking in Tongues. Tongs are a language spoken in the world many different languages are in the world. The Apostle Paul said Tongues of men and angles. The Baptist teach that all the gifts of the spirit are no longer in operation today. They are wrong. The baptism of the Holy Ghost is a separate work of grace. I have never seen anyone that was filled with the Holy Ghost that didn't speak in tongues. The Holy Ghost witnesses that He is there.

You shall receive Power Acts 1:8 Jesus spoke to his disciples christians... When you receive power the only biblical ref is that tongue is the sign. Further more when you personally accept JESUS AS LORD AND SAVIOR you have spirit inside you or you drink from a glass o water, but when you receive the baptism of the HOLY GHOST it's like you JUMP IN THE OCEAN and so you are all soaked inside and outside. my dear friend if you have been taught to reject this bible truth like what they did to me it is a spiritual robbery, dont be robbed by unbiblical doctrines, doctrines of sects, denomination, tradition of man. Religion will always be a hindrace to anyone's spiritual growth. God loves you :)

They give themselves up to wild, excitable feelings, and make unintelligible sounds which they call the gift of tongues. A certain class seem to receive it, and are charmed with the strange manifestations which they witness. A strange spirit rules with this class, which would bear down and run over any one who would reprove them. God's spirit is not in the work. His spirit does not attend such workmen. It is another spirit. Still such preachers will have success among a certain class. But this will increase the labor very much of God's servants whom he shall send..4bSG 154.2
