Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit gave sound teaching about the use of tongues, privately and in church. If people studied the WHOLE chapter, and not cherry-picked bits of it to support their prejudice, then they would see that multiple loud speaking in tongues without interpretation is what Paul taught not to do. Most people who pray in tongues correctly will never be seen on video. If the Holy Spirit is inspiring people to speak and pray in tongues, then to make a blanket accusation that it is of the devil is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit and those who make that accusation may find the gates of heaven shut against them one day, unless they do an unbiased study of 1 Corinthians 14 and see how the gift of tongues should be practiced according to Paul's teaching.

Speaking in tongues is paired with gift of interpretation, in acts the apostles sounded like gibberish to the unbelievers but heard in their native tongue the ones with interpretation . On the other hand, when we speak in tongues to God we hear ourselves as gibberish but Father God is the interpreter. The entire concept of speaking in tongues is to edify (teach) others the gospel. In a nut shell, someone is blessed with ability to understand and speak in a language that is not their native language, that that they may minster in that language to those that only understand that language.

What part of 1 Corinthians 14:2 is difficult to understand? I agree with you completely but Paul said if they want to be ignorant let them be ignorant so he said forbid not to speak in tongues. Paul said tongues is for a demonstration to unbelievers the power of God and not for the church 1 Cor. 14:22. If anyone studies 1 Cor. 14 with an open mind we can clearly see Paul's position on speaking in tongues.

Tongues in Acts was a gift given to the disciples.. when they spoke the gospel... those who heard it heard it in their own language.. it was for the disciples... not the saints.. not the Gentiles.. not the Jews.. but for the apostles

Great job of examining the truth about speaking in tongues. I still remember a church I went to, where this lady "spoke in tongues" almost the entire service, every service. She repeated the exact same eight or ten syllables every time, and it simply sounded ridiculous. You could see the self assured pride on her face as she repeated herself often. I still don't know what she was gibbering about, but I know that when she went on, I wasn't paying attention to the Pastor; I was looking, and listening to her. Eventually, I quit going to that church when they said if you don't speak in tongues, you aren't saved. ( I did try, but all that seemed to come to mind was la,la,la,la,la.....)

A church that does not experience the gifts of the Spirit is a church that has no discernment. How can they discern such spiritual things if their church are not practicing it? The gifts of the Spirit are continuous and always prevalent.

With a careful look at the book of Acts 2, 10,19 and 1 Cor. 12-14 you'll see the richness, depthness and usefulness of tongues. It's a sign to the unbelievers, it's a gift for the edification of the church along with interpretation, and it's a way of praising and connecting to God, where no man understands. There are tongues that can be understood as an Earthly language, there are tongues that needs interpretation inside the church, there are tongues that only God can understand. Please study the Bible not the some abuses inside the Pentecostal movement, bcoz all movements and denominations has its own weaknesses and faultiness.

I rejected God and left the church in 2005 because of this. The churches i went to did the weirdest things like convulsing and loud babbling, running around church, etc. it was scary but most of all just seemed insanity. Every time I asked someone what something meant or why this person was doing that, they said “it’s the holy spirit”. I was done. Truth is, people will believe anything they’re shown by people they trust.

I wonder why those who opposes the pentecostal blessing are the churches where the gifts of the Spirit are not working. There are some misuse and abuse of the gifts in the Pentecostal and Charismatic movement, but it does not invalidates the genuine miracles happening inside the movement. The doctrine of Spirit Baptism in the purpose of empowering Church is truly evident in the movement. That's why Pentecostalism is the fastest growing movement in the world. I'm not being prideful, but the most praying, fasting and Scripture believing people are those who believes in the gifts of the Spirit and those who experienced the blessing of Pentecost. Tongues is not essential for salvation, it has its own importance and purpose.

Let's worship God in Spirit and in TRUTH. There are a lot of traditions of men that are mistaken as sound doctrine and spreading throughout the church concerning Spiritual Gifts, specifically Tongues, these denominational doctrines are designed by Satan to confuse the children of God and ultimately rob them of their faith in Christ alone, and place their faith in a Gift -tongues. First, concerning gifts, just as Paul begins in (1 Corinthians 12:1-2) we don't want to be ignorant, misinformed or unaware about Spiritual Gifts or led astray into doing the things of God our own way and not Christ's way. (Ephesians 4:16) EVERY believer, through the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 7:7) (1 Corinthians 12:4,7), receives DIFFERENT Gifts designed to serve, uplift, motivate and edify the whole body of Christ (1 Corinthians 14:26). Since all gifts belong to the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:11), we are not to envy another, or believe a man when he says YOU MUST HAVE this or that specific gift for Spiritual Growth (such as Tongues), to be saved or fulfilled in the Spirit, as it's not up to any man to say what Gift you must have, but entirely up to the Holy Spirit to decide what gift is needed and where, in the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:18). For your SPIRITUAL GROWTH the Apostles by the Holy Spirit teaches this (1 Peter 2:2) & (James 1:3-4) and to edify & build you up this scripture is for every saint (Acts 20:32). Desire Gifts, see the gift that God has placed in you, (1 Corinthians 12:31) (1 Corinthians 14:1) No one will have all the Gifts, and everyone won’t have the same Gift. (1 Corinthians 12:14-17) So never feel left out if any specific gift is not obtained, while failing to see the gift that God has already placed in you, remember God chooses what gift is best for the body, and it’s not all about WHAT WE want. The Holy Spirit joins and holds the communion (1 Corinthians 12:13) of the body of Christ, every believer is joined by the Holy Spirit, not by the water baptism or a church name or denomination, and He is the power of each saint to do the will of God with one common goal to build up and edify the church. the Holy Spirit provides us with these Gifts or in other words, tools or abilities of service, so that we may accomplish our full potential as abounding believers & disciples. GIFTS ARE LISTED AS …. (1co 12:7-10) Word of Wisdom, Word of Knowledge, Great Faith, Healing, Working of Miracles, Prophecy, Discerner of Spirits, Speaking in Various Tongues, Interpretation of Tongues, (1co 12:28) Apostles, Prophets, Teachers, Helping, Administrating (Romans 12:6-8) Service, Encourager, Giving, Leader/Overseer, Mercy, (Ephesians 4:11) Evangelists, Pastors, (1 Peter 4:10) always use your Gift diligently or consistent with the Word. The Gift of Tongues are the most misunderstood of all gifts, and are never to be forbidden (1 Corinthians 14:39), as they are a gift of the Holy Spirit. However, Paul warns us (1 Corinthians 14:37-38) that all things written concerning Tongues and all the Gifts are of a command from God to all and not to be ignored. There are TWO TYPES of Tongues as described by Paul (1 Corinthians 13:1), TONGUES OF ANGELS AND MEN, however one of them requires an interpreter when there is another hearer present. The Tongues at Pentecost (Acts 2:4-8) were Tongues of Men, which means they were of the native languages of the many different men present at Pentecost and as a result needed no interpreter. However, with the Tongues of Angels (sometimes called a heavenly language) described in (1 Corinthians 14:27-28) in the order of worship with others, and to promote love and harmony to prevent discord and confusion (1 Cor. 14:33), an interpreter is needed. At Corinth to prevent chaotic utterances that ends up confusing and turning off the non-believer, of whom they are meant to edify, (1co 14: 22, 27) Paul directed that not more than two or at most three should speak in tongues, (one at a time). (1 Corinthians 14:1-4) this gives the reason for interpretation, but sadly & selfishly many will only read the part that says, "speaks to God" & "edifies himself", when the emphasis is to not be selfish with any gift, with the objective to interpret in church to be decent and in order (1 Cor. 14: 27-28, 40). However, when alone, the Tongues of Angels need no interpretation and may be exercised freely. Because gifts can be corrupted, abused or even operated by a DIFFERENT SPIRIT (2 Thessalonians 2:9) (Matthew 24:24), Paul by the Holy Spirit, knew it was important to bring knowledge and order concerning the gift of tongues. Many traditions of men will say the only evidence of the Holy Spirit is by the Gift of Tongues, because of the examples of the early church at Pentecost (Acts 2:4). The Apostles nor Jesus himself EVER TEACHES US TO SINGLE OUT THE GIFT OF TONGUES as the only sign or evidence of the Holy Spirit or a standard or prerequisite of receiving the Holy Spirit. (Mark 16:17-18 Notice: CHRIST lists examples of many Gifts not just one - tongues.) (1 Corinthians 12:7) - the spiritual gift of tongues is not given to prove your salvation or baptism of the Holy Spirit, but for service. THE EXAMPLES of Tongues IN THE EARLY CHURCH WERE simply to evangelize and prophecy in the languages of each one of the 15 different nationalities that was present at Pentecost and for waking up the world to the Gospel of Jesus Christ by the shocking nature of Tongues, and not to be taken as a standard event for all time, as it was and is up to the Holy Spirit to choose and determine what Gift is needed at whatever stage of the Gospel. Receiving the Holy Spirit is explained in (John 7: 38-39) where Jesus tells us that as soon as you Believe in Christ as your Lord and Savior, you shall receive the Holy Ghost, and the Apostles taught (Acts 2:38) to repent and be baptized in Christ and you shall receive the Holy Ghost, neither Jesus nor the Apostles mention Tongues ONLY as a confirmation. However, Jesus does mention in (Matthew 7:16, 20) that you shall know them by FRUITS not by GIFTS. There are many traditions of men that teach that praying for someone in tongues is more powerful but (1 Corinthians 14:6) says that NOTHING is MORE POWERFUL than THE WORD of God spoken over someone’s life. Myths vs. Truth Myth #1 - Rub the belly to receive the Holy Spirit. Truth - There is no scripture or example given that says rubbing the belly brings the Holy Spirit. Jesus already revealed to us His criterion or bases upon which we receive the Holy Spirit, (John 7:38-39) (Luke 11:13) believing in Christ. Myth #2 Tarry to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. Truth - You can’t recreate Pentecost, In the Bible, no one agonized & cries or begs over a long period to receive the Spirit, it's simply when you believe. Myth #3 You can't control Tongues, Truth- (1co 14:32) every GIFT holder is in control of their Spirit and also have the FRUIT of Temperance. Myth #4 I can use Tongues for Worship in Church. TRUTH - because Church assembly is all about edifying the WHOLE body (1co 14: 16,23,26,28) it is uncaring to use any gift selfishly, to speak, pray or worship in Tongues IN CHURCH without interpretation is not thinking of others, a Gift is your ministry. There are many traditions of men that say that "speaking in tongues (a Gift) is a MUST HAVE and believe that Spiritual Gifts are the highest form of being Spiritual. However THE HOLY GHOST manifests in BOTH SPIRITUAL FRUITS & GIFTS, its operating in the FRUITS of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), of which Jesus Christ says is a MUST HAVE (John 15:2) that defines the character of the Holy Spirit. The 9 SPIRITUAL FRUITS are the HIGHEST FORM of walking in the Spirit and are what brings SPIRITUAL GIFTS to life. So, PRIMARY focus should be on mastering your Spiritual Fruit. LOVE (a FRUIT) is chosen to define when a GIFT is of the Holy Spirit, (1 Corinthians 13:1-3) says that Tongues and ALL GIFTS are diminished to a useless, lifeless and even a void thing and there is no connection to God, if there is no love (a FRUIT), so therefore LOVE (a FRUIT) governs all spirituality and is what makes all Gifts HOLY & ACCEPTABLE (1 Corinthians 13:13) (Ephesians 4:15). Just as Jesus says in (Matthew 7:16, 20) the evidence of the Spirit of God is in The FRUITS (Galatians 5:22-23) NOT GIFTS. ALSO, (1 Corinthians 13:8-10) says Spiritual FRUITS (Love, Faith, Hope that is Longsuffering) shall always operate in WHOLE and will forever represent the fullness of Holy Spirit, whereas Spiritual Gifts operate in PART (such as with tongues where the understanding is unfruitful - 1 Corinthians 14:14) not having the fullness of spiritual revelation (1 Cor13:12). So therefore, with Spiritual GIFTS being in PART this represents an incompleteness or weakness that later will make them obsolete, BUT Spiritual Fruit being whole can NEVER BE WEAK OR OBSOLETE, so therefore FRUIT are superior. Also, many traditions of men assume (Jude 1:20) to be about praying in Tongues of angels or men, but it's about praying in Faith (a FRUIT of the Spirit), so therefore praying in Faith is praying in the Spirit, by the strength, wisdom & confidence of the Holy Ghost as He directs and empowers us, also (Romans 8:26) reveals how the Holy Ghost prays and it’s not with an uttered language. Also (ROMANS 8:26) says We don't need a Speaking in Tongues language to talk to God in the HIGHEST FORM. Because as you pray in YOUR OWN natural tongue, the Holy Spirit becomes your PRAYER PARTNER interceding for you without words.

I think there is a confusion (s) and counterfeits. The devil will try to mislead no matter what is the situation. But there is true gifts that christians should seek because there are weapons (edification of the church). It is possible to have unknown tongues that are not understandable and not everyone will have the same gifts unless you desire and ask for it. 1 Corinthians 14:2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. In brief description read 1 Corinthians chap 12 to Chap 14. What is yours??

Jesus shared many things with this disciples. How strange I don't hear any reference from Jesus about tongues or praying in the sprit?

Spiritual Gifts ceased at about the time Paul was put in prison. Gifts were for signs to the house of Israel to fulfill what was prophesied by Joel. Gods mystery was being revealed. The mystery was the extension of grace to all Gentiles in christ. Once this mystery was fully revealed, the gifts ceased to operate. Tongues were actual languages upon indivials willed by God. Not enough room here for a complete exposition of scriptures related but when you study it logically you can only come to ONE BIBLICALLY BASED CONCLUSION.

Some correction here and elaboration. It does not say the apostles SPOKE in every tongue. It says the people HEARD them in their own language. The apostles did not suddenly have the ability to speak in all languages so God took their tongues and interpreted it into the language of the listeners. I have seen this in church services. If it was languages then why would the crowd accuse them of being drunk? There was more here than just man standing up and speaking a foreign language.

Isn't it interesting that every recorded time a believer recieved the Holy Spirit they spoke in tongues. According to the original Koine greek, that the Bible was written in, " tongues" means, " a language" or " another language". It never means more than one language. How could anyone stand before the Lord and say I didn't know that speaking in " tongues" was evidence that you have recieved the Holy Spirit. 1Cor. Ch.14 has Paul saying that " He that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh, not unto man , but to God for no man understanding him, howbeit in the Spirit he speaks mysteries ".

The word says don't speak in tongues unless you have an interpreter inside a church. Do it between you and God.

Any study of speaking in " tongues" should be centered on the Word of God alone. The word " tongues" in the N.T.s original greek means " a language". On pentecost the apostles recieved the Holy Spirit and they all began to speak in " a language". Three times the men in the crowd said ," How hear we them in our own languages". Why was this repeated three times ? Because the emphasis is on what they were hearing not on what the believers were sppeaing. Three times, in Acts, we have scriptural examples of believers recieving the Holy Spirit. In all three examples the first thing that happened was that they spoke in " tongues". This is the only biblical evidence of what happens immediately after a believer recieves the Holy Spirit. Nowhere in scripture do we have evidence that a believer recieved the Holy Spirit and then later recieved the Spirit baptism. The only conclusion that can be drawn is that recieving the Holy Spirit occurs as a result of the Spirit baptism. Scriptures shows that speaking in " tongues" as a result of recieving the Holy Spirit baptism edifys only the speaker.(1Cor.14:4). The gift of speaking in " tongues" is a different manifestation of this language that not all believers recieve. It is always accompanied by a believer with the gift of interpretation of " tongues" for the edification of a church.(1Cor.14:5). Prophesying is speaking under the anointing which certainly speaking in " tongues" with interpretation is. Edifying not only ourselves but others also.

This is what happens when people have a religion to defend. They willfully ignore and passover the word of God and choose to find passages that support what their organization teaches. This is exactly what this teacher has done. That's why we have to read the Bible for ourselves least we be led astray by people like this teacher!

There are quite a bit of errors in his preaching. First, is that there were Roman soldiers in the crowd who would have heard the Gospel preached on the Day of Pentecost. Secondly, the gifts of tongues given to the household or Cornelius was to prove to Peter that the Gentiles were to receive the Gospel. Third, the Bible was written in Greek which all would have understood. It was the common language at the time.

Paul was addressing the assembly of the church but you can apply to your personal prayer time too. He who speaks in an unknown tongue speaks to God. Pray for the interpretation of what your spirit is praying (tongues) and you will start to get words of knowledge, the Holy Spirit will show you things to come. It happens to me all the time. While you pray in the spirit also pray in English in your mind and you will get more direction on who and what to pray for.

Bible answer man, Please note they weren't preaching the gospel in Acts 2: 4-11, they were speaking the wonderful works of God. There are EIGHT operations of tongues (Speaking in tongues ) recorded in the Bible, NOT three as you say. And everyone are very good to the believers. There are only FIVE Biblical accounts of people being baptized with the Holy Ghost, and in every account they all spoke in tongues, making tongues the Biblical evidence of the baptism with the Holy Ghost. Just because there's no record of them speaking in tongues in those eighteen times that people were filled with the Holy Ghost, it doesn't mean they didn't. Tongues means languages (Heavenly languages).

IN corrinthians 10:4 the Lord says, I WOULD that ye ALL spoke in tongues but RATHER ye interpret, for it is greater to edify the church, than one self. It is a dangerous thing to call the work of God, to be of the devil. That is Gods spirit in us, praying too God in our behalf. Great is the mystery of God. Mark 16:17,18 should NOT be twisted! acts 2:38
