This is a multi-part series for those of you that want to learn VMware vSphere. In this video we will examine the Different types of VMware Virtaul Switches, both Standard and Distributed. We will also explain the three different VLANNing options we have. VST, VGT, EST.
It won't be complete until we take a look at the various NIC Teaming polices and high availability option we have. We will wrap things up with a demo on creating various Virtual Switches..
Enjoy the series and leave comments

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I certainly learned a lot and you earned my sub. As a new Sub, might I suggest 1080p or better quality for your videos? 720p was pretty grainy and hard on the eyes. Look forward to the next one! Thanks again!

Super informative. I had not found 'vsphere switch vlan config' this good on any other source. Thanks. Have a doubt. What will be the vlan info on the portgroups in case of EST VST : PG will have vlan id VGT : PG will have 4095/range of vlans EST : ? Thanks in advance. 1 suggestion, video resolution is 720P, slides look slight blurry.

Thanks so much for the info.. I did not notice that some of my videos were at SD quality. Looks like something changed in my Power Director settings. I have resolved the issue moving forward. As for your question On Standard Switches set it to "None 0" On vSphere Distributed Switches Set it to "None". Thanks again and have a good one.

Hi and ty for the excellent video. A simple question i have is that are we able to connect the VMware virtual switches to an SDN controller like ONOS etc?
@TechUnGlued

To be perfectly honest, I have never worked with that product, so I am not sure. I don' think you can use it to manage vSphere Virtual Switches.. Thanks for watching and have a great day.

Does the LACP hashing algorithm have to match between distributed switch and physical switch? I have a Juniper EX4300 switch and it does hashing based on mac/ip/tcp-port all together and doesn’t allow to change the hashing algorithm.

Hi, great video, thanks! Is it possible to migrate from a standard switch to a distributed switch using only one NIC card? I am concerned about losing connectivity during the move from standard to distributed switch or even if this is possible! [Edit] I got it to work. I was able to use the "add host" wizard to add all my hosts *except* the host with VC VM. But, I was able to migrate the VC VM to another host (that was already with the new DVS + uplink) and then add the host successfully. All ok, now :)

Glad you sorted it out.. Nothing like some hands on experience. I was going to suggest a vmotion, but I don't know your exact config... Have a good one. Make sure you backup you vCenter server and the Distributed switch

I have 1 esxi with 1 nic, but I would like to create 2 virtual switch each with a different ip address range, can you make a video to show how to do?
@TechUnGlued
@TechUnGlued 6 ай бұрын
Hi. So you can create a 2nd switch but it will have no nic (uplink) assign to it. Therefore any VM's connected to it, will only be able to talk to each other on that host and not to the outside world.. Also remember, you don't assign IP's to the switches, Vmkernel ports and VM's get IIP's.. Can you provide provide more info on what exactly you want to achieve?? Thanks for watching and have a great day...

Thank for video, i have question, now i have 1 server install esxi and 3 vm machine on esxi, 1 physical switch create vlan 50 and port trunk on switch, on esxi creat vswitch with vlan id 50 connect to port trunk on physical switch - vm machine on esxi can ping outside with ip range vlan50, but vm machine can not connect internet That why, may i config corect? Thanks

So the vswitch that is connected to the uplink NIC. Make sure the nic is connected to the physical switch port that is configured as a trunk and carrying VLAN 50 and any other vlans.. Check to make sure the VM's can ping their default gateway.. If the can - it may me a routing issue.. check your router to make sure it know how to get to the vlan 50 subnet . Hope this help. Have a great day

So we do have to configure the trunk on Layer 3 router not Layer 2 switch self??
@TechUnGlued
@TechUnGlued 8 ай бұрын
So trunbks are configured on Layer 3 devices (Layer 3 of the OSI Model). So if your switch is only Layer 2, then you do it on your router.. Most enterprise grade witched are Layer 2 and 3.. You will need to see which one you have.. Thanks for watching and have a great day....
