Personally, I really like the arcs and plot lines of SHUT UP. Both the Pacifist and Genocide routes convey different themes that tell really captivating stories. In the pacifist run, the game expertly explores topics such as capitalism, and being a true American citizen. The monsters you encounter such as Alphys, Alaska, and King Lucia Smith have doubts about the American dream, and will often discuss becoming British, or bad-talking capitalism, and an assortment of other things. In addition, it almost feels as if SHUT UP’s tutorial character, A Weapon, helps put you, the player, on the right path towards becoming a true American. Also, many characters will discuss former U.S President Donald Trump, as well as Hillary Clinton, and other politicians. However, another important aspect of SHUT UP is the exploration you experience through the game. You visit many real life places and websites such as Texas, Deviantart, Belgium, and most importantly, the University of Ohio. When watching Shayy play this game, I was completely entranced regarding his travels all over the globe, while on the quest to subtly convey capitalism and Americanism. Even though many characters wanted to do inappropriate things along the way, he still triumphed. By the way, that’s another important thing to mention. Many of the characters, such as Asriel and A Weapon, openly share their desires about getting physical with the player. Even though no sane person would do this so openly in real life, I believe that SHUT UP is trying to tell the player to speak their mind, which is a really powerful lesson, which I wish more video games would explore. My favorite character was definitely Sans’ brother, Darius. He always goes into great lengths to describe his physical experiences with others, which is another example of the game conveying the message of speaking your mind. In addition, while he is also inappropriate, he is easily the funniest and most entertaining character in the entire game. As funny as he is, however, it is made clear that Darius is unsure about his sexuality. This is the game expressing that it’s okay to feel lost in that regard. By the end of the game Darius has calmed down in that regard, showing that the player truly left a positive impact on his life. The genocide route, on the other hand, while still having most of the charm and depth of the pacifist route, is not as good, but should still be revered as a masterpiece. It tackles different topics, and has a vastly different story. Besides the fact that the player kills everything they encounter, this route has a much higher emphasis on sexuality. It was still present in the pacifist route, but it wasn’t discussed as much as it is in the genocide route. While Americanism was the main focus of the former, the latter focuses on sexuality primarily. Whenever you level up in SHUT UP, your sexuality increases. As you play through this route; you begin to realize that the genocide route focuses way more on the player, rather than the characters. They’re still their amazing selves, but here, the player is trying to figure out who exactly they are. It feels very emotionally powerful to go on this new adventure in the same world. Not only are you killing the friends you made on the pacifist run, but you’re figuring out who you are in the process: In conclusion, I could go on forever about how much of a masterpiece of a game this is, but it truly is a spectacle to behold. I could talk about this game for hours, and never get tired. No matter how long you play SHUT UP, you are a changed person by the end. 10/10. This, is my new favorite piece of fiction, and I would die a happy man if more people got to see this as the masterpiece that it is. Thank you, Shayy, for presenting this game to your audiences; introducing it to many people, including myself.
