Thank you so much :-) Yes, give the oils a try - it really is WAY easier than using acrylics, much more time to blend the colours. And the biggest advantage is - they stay true to their wet appearance, acrylics tend to change their colour when they dried. And a new video is coming every sunday ;-) Lots of different topics, pretty sure you will like some of the other videos, too :-)))

Great Painting, tho you made a Big Mistake for the Schooled Eye. I did lots of Turtles. And their "Scales" are very Geometrical, Hexagonal Based. You started and then simply connected them as you went. I did the same mistake on my First. It looks more real if you follow their Pattern.

With enough patience it should work :-)))) but it really is more difficult as the acrylics are nearly dry the moment you put them on, so no time for blending unfortunately.

Hello Tobias, Hope you are well & being safe. My name is James, I am teaching myself oil painting. I stumbled on your tutorials and not only loving your work but learning a lot. I am grateful you are so giving of your knowledge. I have a question for you, after you lay in your underpainting do you let it completely dry before going ahead with the rest? If so how do you get your wet paint to blend with the dry.
@brennerfineart
@brennerfineart 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, great to meet another teacher for the oils :-))) Now to your question - I let the underpainting dry completely, otherwise it would interfere with the new layer of colour. And we would also run into the problem, that in some places the layer of colour would become so thin that we could see the canvas. And that`s something I really don`t like when I do a realistic piece. I blend the fresh layer of colour by drybrushing it into the old/dry layer of colour. In my early days I tried to achieve the effect by putting in the colours wet in wet side by side. But today I drybrush on top adding just the new layer of colour wherever I need it. There are pieces (portraits e.g.) where I underpaint but still go over pretty much the whole piece again with a fresh layer wet in wet. It depends what technique I use, when I need a really soft transition on a face I go wet in wet on top of the old and dry layer. When I have a rock formation like this one here I dry brush the colour into the old layer that in most places "shines through".

Enlighten to see this painting. I feel the joy of starting oil paint now. If I purchase student grade oil paint, will I get the same quality color as yours? Or do you use professional expensive oil paint? Thks in advance.
@brennerfineart
@brennerfineart 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill, great that this painting inspires you to start using oils :-))) The last time I used really "cheap" oil paint is decades ago...so I`m not sure what the quality of todays student grade oil paint is. I would recommend that you don`t spend too much on your first set of oil colours - perhaps you don`t like to paint with oils. But if you like it you can step up the game later and switch to a better colour. Btw - I use Winsor&Newton water mixable oils - they are not extremely expensive, a 200 ml tube is around 20 dollars. So you don`t need "High-End" colour to get decent results :-)))
@artbillcorner
@artbillcorner 3 жыл бұрын
@@brennerfineart . Thks so much for tips. I will search futher about water mixable one.
@RobertF-
@RobertF- 3 жыл бұрын
Did you seal the graphite drawing with fixative spray so it wouldn't mix with the oil paint in the underpainting? And how long did the oil underpainting take to dry? Also, what are the pros and cons of making an underpainting with oils instead of acrylics?
@brennerfineart
@brennerfineart 3 жыл бұрын
I actually use a hard pencil for the presketch on the canvas or the mdf plates - so there is basically no need for a fixative spray. The oils took around two days to dry, I use water mixable oils and in the stage of the underpainting this helps a lot to get the colours dried in a reasonable time when you thin them down with water. Acrylics dry SO quick, especially on a canvas that has not been pre-sealed, that there is basically no chance of getting the colours blended for the underpainting. And here I just wanted to have at least the possibility to "pull the colours around" a little bit.Therefore I used the oils...and most important - I had no deadline to finish the painting ;-) That is one of the most critical aspects when it comes to determining what kind of colour you would use. If there would have been a tight deadline I would definitely have used acrylics.
