Every angler surveys the water when arriving at a fishing spot and tries to determine which color would be best, but Marsh Man Masson wanted to see if the old adages about appropriate colors for stained water are accurate, so he dropped a GoPro down and jigged an assortment of baits and colors in front of it. Some of the results surprised him!

I'm a saltwater fisherman on the west coast and recently got into bass fishing and my local lake is dirty as hell. Fished it 5 times with all kinds of colors with no results until I tried black and blue and started slaying large mouth there ever since.

fluorescent orange shows up really well in murky water. I did a test like this a couple years ago at a dock in the spring. mounted my underwater camera to the dock and cast lures out, reeling them toward the camera. I was testing some new lures actions, but also their paintjobs as well. a flo orange one was easily visible from the farthest out.

this stuff is always so interesting to see and talk about. if we were to apply this all to walleye fishing, the first 3 colors would most likely produce the most on a river day in and day out. same river for smallies the darker lures would be where you would start. crappie could be any color on any given day.

I always just use a underspin jig with white lure in stained water. The under spin moves water around so they can feel it and it gives noise and also flashes so the fish see it better and the fish seem to always bite like crazy if there are any there.

Indeed. As I mention near the end of the vid, most fish rely on their lateral lines to zero in on prey, but once they get close, I'd prefer to be bouncing something they can see.

Great information/confirmation. I agree with you general assessment too . But I did have one particular trip where the conventional wisdom went out the door. This was several years ago now; fishing the tressles throwing avocado Dudley's picking up one or 2 here and there. Came across a guy that was asses & elbows every cast. Got close enough to see the color he was throwing. It was Dudley's Purple haze (light violet top, pearl bottom). The water was nasty dirty that day, but for whatever reason, they hit that light color every cast after we switched. I will say, that that incident was the only one I ever had with reverse color scheme.

Respectfully, you are assuming that fish see and observe in the same color spectrum as we do. Water temp, light, etc. All effect. The comment that lures are designed for those that fish is spot on!
@FatJeffStew

Oh yea, lots of colors end looking very similar with dichromatic vision. I usually base mine on whether the bait will reflect, thus shine (murkier water) or soak up colors thus giving it more camouflage (clear water). Then there's that middle ground of real natural colors that can be used in about all situations.
@excelsior1018
@excelsior1018 5 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but water begins to filter out the light spectrum with depth. Your lure's colors change in tone the deeper they go.

white is an amazing dirty water color(one of the absolute best) but those swimbaits have some translucence to them(you can see the screwlock through the bait). A solid white pearl is my favorite for that chocolate milk water.

I'm not a color guy either but I met a Team Jackson Kayak Guy Pre-Redfishing a Tournament. He went into a lake area that has Oysters & Grass. It's not deep at all. He told me the Reds were trapped in there by the thousands but they just wouldn't bite! So he grabbed a 4" extremely Clear (no specs, etc) see thru clear paddletail & bit the top end off & slaughtered them in a few minutes. Catching & Releasing Slot Reds, he caught 12, 25 to 27" Reds here in SE TX.

I generally avoid darker colors, I'm not exactly a "match the hatch" type of guy but I like lighter colors. I think darker colors are probably more visible in all water condition but our eyes (and fishes) work off light. To the eye a lighter color will reflect more light off it giving it a brighter glow or halo like effect around it. Dark colors do well due to the color contrast while also blocking light around it but in really dark water they blend in but nothing would work well in these conditions. I prefer light colors with a lot of shimmer (like a white pearl) or maybe even some foil baits. My goal is to make it brighter than everything by reflecting the most light off it. Plus most bottoms are typically a lot darker than the water as well (granted it will never touch the bottom on a popping cork). I don't feel the contrast with darker colors is bad more so than a different solution to the same problem.

I heard from someone that the lure colours in dirty and fresh water have something to do with the UV rating of the day, so black works better due to less UV penetration in brackish water and clearer water has more Uv penetration

Being in Florida with a lot of stained water, I've always heard people swear by dark colored soft plastics... but I've never had more success than when I've been using chartreuse worms. It's always made me feel that silhouette, action, and profile is much more important than color.
