Nearly half of Kentucky adults have either diabetes or prediabetes. But far too many people don't know it. In a new documentary, KET shines a light on the alarming numbers of people with undiagnosed diabetes or prediabetes and shows how Kentuckians are working to reduce those rates .There's good news to share - -with lifestyle changes and proper care and support , diabetes can be controlled, and in some case, prevented or delayed.

I used to be ‘pre-diabetic’, and I thought I’d just deal with it later, no big deal. Life got in the way, other more important medical things got in the way, and I forgot about it. Fast forward a year and I FINALLY got diagnosed with MS, and due to being so unwell (and then actively working on my health) lost about 70lbs. Thankfully the diabetes that I forgot about is now gone, but if I weren’t diagnosed with MS my life wouldn’t have changed, and I wouldn’t be working on my health. You don’t know how unwell you actually are until you feel better. If you make small changes now and work on your health you can change your future for the better.

I'm glad you changed! I don't have diabetes but i had high cholesterol and made a change to a very healthy diet and fixed it. Also fixed was my high resting heart rate and high weight. I was on blood pressure med but off now and my blood pressure is slightly high at 115/85. The 85 needs to be 79 or lower. It is not at the level that can benefit from medicine yet again, though.

I was diagnosed w diabetes Aug '23. I was taken completely by surprise. I'm now in the At Risk stage below pre diabetes and have some work to do to lower my #s. This is such a reversible disease if one puts their mind to it. I'm doing low carb and as a result all my cravings are gone. This is so amazing. I've lost 20 lbs and still have another 40 to go. Taking small steps toward my goal and trying not to stress out too much. My dr. wanted me to take Diabetes meds and got mad at me when I said no I will change my lifestyle. I've gone from 6.6 down to 5.8. My goal is to reduce this # to 5.0. My dr. told me it probably wouldn't be possible. The medical staff are so negative and don't provide positive reinforcement. I don't want to take more medication! I've decided to become my own positive advocate and get the job done.

Take a deep dive into the keto diet. Dr Berg and Dr. Jason Fung. If you don't eat carbs, you don't have a spike in blood sugar, no spike in blood sugar means no excess insulin spike. Insulin is the real bad guy. I lost 30 pounds. Hubby is diabetic and finally did it and his a1c is much better. Now he is off of one of his blood pressure meds because his BP is too low. I am a nurse. Regular doctors and dieticians etc are not trained. That is when the "recommended daily allowance" was created and implemented all over the US. It has been proven that it was based on faulty information. This is where the diabetes and cardiovascular epidemic began. Now we are all suffering. Processed foods are making politicians rich with kickbacks from pharma companies and the food companies. Please educate yourself on this. It is sickening. I have faith in you.

Diabetes runs in my mother's side of the family like wildfire no matter what. Both of her parents had it despite growing/raising almost all of their own food, never eating at restaurants ever, and all of their food being homemade. They were also old school farmers until the mid 40's when my grandfather switched to building the railroad tracks through Kansas. They still continued to grow and cook all of their own food. Even some of my mom's sisters who have stayed thin or even underweight during their lives have it. Sometimes genetics are just not on your side. Not saying to just give up and get fat, but there are other factors besides McDonald's at work for some.

Physical activity or exercise is very important but it does little to almost nothing and even negative in cases as people who exercise tend to eat more because the body demands it and in their mind they deserve a treat since they exercise or trained hard anyway. It’s the proper diet that is a big help for diabetics. Either be a high fiber low gi vegetarian who supplements for what lacks being one, a high fat low carb keto or carnivore practitioner, a paleo dieter, or a well balanced all organic non processed eater.. whichever works for you or what you can stick to. 😁

Diabetes Type 2 is actually metabolic syndrome aka Insulin resistance. The current AMA ADA approved treatment for diabetes type 2 and pre diabetes are palliative and not curative. . Type 2 Diabetes cannot be treated successfully solely with medications without dietary changes. The progression of T2D can be addressed / slowed down by intermittent fasting and a low carb high fiber Ketogenic diet. ... Diabetes symptoms can manifest itself as high blood pressure, frequent urination, chronic thirst, joint pains, chronic muscle pains, slow healing of infections, nail fungus/ Athlete's foot / skin fungal infection, obesity, and dizziness. T2D weakens the innate immune system response to viral infections - Long term damage from metabolic syndrome include liver cancer/failure, pancreatic cancer/failure, renal/kidney cancer/failure, stroke, and heart attacks,

This is true, but obesity very much increases the likelihood of getting it, makes managing it far harder and leads people that are already at risk due to genetics to develop it far younger than they usually would. There's also a lot of people not usually particularly at risk for T2DM that do end up developing it due to obesity, including younger and younger people. Before it was mostly a thing older people with bad luck in the gene department would get, now it's not uncommon for people middle aged and younger, hell even kids, to get it. How much of that is the Standard American Diet and lack of exercise vs "just" fat is admittedly something I have looked into too deeply, but I do know enough to say that both have at least some impact, whichever one ends up being more prominent.

I had an A1C of 14.0 , had 2 amputated toes , and going blind due to diabetic retinopahty of the eye , and died (for 4.5 minutes ) of a heart attack due to sepsis attacking my heart , I had diabetes for about 30 years or more , I read for years about diabetes , then read everyone who said they succeded in putting diabetes into remission and noticed they all had same basic path they followed 1). Eat fruits and Vegetables every day , especially rice or potatoes ( the low carb and Keto people are way wrong about potatoes and rice because these 2 are the most filling of all foods on earth , no you will not get fat , but will actually get thinner because you will be so satiatiated you can get away with only 1 or 2 mealls only per day leading to even more weight loss 2). Keep your calories low , if you eat lots of rice or potatoes this will be very easy and you will not get hungry , you will get big glucose spikes at first but each day the beggining point of the spikes will be lower each day so the general trajectory will be down (dont worry about the spikes themselves just watch how the resting glucose number (the bottom or beginning of the spike ) slowly goes down each day 3). work out every day about 30 minutes each day , this will have a huge effect on whether you reverse the diabetes or not 4) take your diabetes medecines exactly 30 minutes before you first bite of food ( this will drop all your glucose numbers down about 65 points within your first day compared to taking diabetes medecine at same time as your first bite of food . 5). do not eat any oils at all , not even the supposedly healthy oils like olive oil , I tested this out for only 2 months by eating a Beyond veggie burger evey day for those 2 months my a1c went from 5.4 to 5.9 in that short period , so I now know they are 100-% right , no oil , not even a drop or you will not be able to reverse the diabetes , even eating a single stick of butter will cause your diabetes to come raging back again as Dr Michael Gregor often warns. I have dropped my A1c down to 5.4 doing these things and it only takes most people about 3 or 4 months to accomplish this so it will be easy to test.

The dietary guidelines…. We know the human body can use around 120 grams of glucose energy a day. The human body regulates to 4 gms or 1 teaspoon of glucose in the blood. Why, why, why recommend 200-400 grams of carbohydrates a day on a daily basis? When the body has to over-regulate the blood glucose with insulin, the pancreas can get fatigued and the glucose rises in the blood. This is the definition of diabetes. Our first thing we need to do is help teach people the normal daily diet should be comprised of good Whole Foods, first protein as it is nutrient-dense , then vegetables with limited fruits and very small if any grains. Eliminating highly processed foods and sweets. This would prevent diabetes and help maintain health. It should be a normal dietary pattern. A normal carb level of around 100 carbs, not the ridiculous amounts, we do not need to create disease to then try and treat it.

The whole way we look at metabolic syndrome is skewed. Very little, if any, emphasis should be placed on genetics. Typically, lifestyles get passed down through generations, so bad habits are viewed as "genetic". The best first step in getting numbers (blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, et al.) back within normal parameters: avoid ALL processed foods (including alcohol), "fast" foods, animal products, and salt (i.e. do all shopping in the produce aisle--or, better still, support your local small-farmers). Eat lots of legumes, greens, mushrooms, nuts, and fruits (especially berries). Before starting this, get a checkup. Try it for thirty days, making NO exceptions, and with NO "cheat days" (think of who it is you cheat--YOURSELF). Then, get another checkup. Be amazed. Wonder why no one told you to do this years ago. Several years ago, I was at a college reunion. Amid the small talk, one of my classmates, an MD, was making jokes about my being an "herbivore". It was all in good fun. A little later, another classmate said, in passing, that he was concerned, because he was now on drugs to treat his type 2 diabetes. My MD friend immediately told him, "Start eating what Jack [me] eats. You'll be well in about a week." Thirty days. Give it a try. Your life, or at least quality of life, could well depend on it. Ah, forgot to mention: GET MOVING. It doesn't have to be a lot; a good walk every day is a good start. However, the doctors will tell you that more important, by far, is changing what you put on your plate. GOOD HEALTH ! 🥦❤👍

Plant-Based diets which are easy to follow if you are motivated to saving your own life, can lower blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, reverse arthritis, help prevent cancer, heal eczema, and asthma. Since most tastes in food we love are already enhanced with plant-based seasonings, meals are enjoyable. You are not hungry and can eat what you want to feel full. There are foods one will not lose weight on such as taking a can of Planter’s Nuts and snacking on them. But if you choose other things like salsa with just a few chips like 4 and spread them with refried beans, seasoned with taco seasoning and some garlic salt, all I can say is this is not a diet as I enjoy is too much. I am down from 200 lbs to 156 this AM. I used to be in a wheelchair. Am not missing it. I was pre-diabetic, am no more, my blood pressure is no problem either and my cholesterol is under control. Yes, there are things you have to learn to change how you cook, but when food is delicious and colorful, it does not feel like I have given up anything except my diseases. We are dairy-free as there is a lot wrong with dairy. It is something you should look at from the other point of view, not that it is healthy but that it is not. Just giving up all dairy and my arthritis was so reduced I did not need my wheelchair any more and my hands became useful again. I could not open a jar even when it had been opened before. Now, most jars, from the super market I can open, if not, I have an under cabinet jar opener which works like a charm. Being able to learn at any age makes us human. But it also means that the diet is letting our arteries open up and get that needed oxygen to our brains. Eleven years ago before I started this, I was judged that I had mild cognitive impairment. I am now 69, and at this age, my father, was both feet into Alzheimer’s he had to stop driving as he was a danger to himself and others. I feel fine. Instead of making no sense, I can remember where I put everything, I can look and see the car coming from the left and remember what I saw. Before, I could not. Let me tell you, this is a WONDERFUL effect for me.

SMH.

22m 15s - I don't believe that Arleen was doing 25,000 steps per day. Let's just assume that she's 5ft 6inches tall. That would be 10.93 miles every day. No way was she walking almost 11 miles every day. BS.
