My Tiny Estate™

3 ай бұрын

It’s been a long, cold winter in England…but SPRING is just around the corner and that means tackling our most challenging makeover yet! We spent years clearing out the overgrown brush and downed trees at the Main Estate but when we bought the Dower House -- the massive backyard was nothing but a patch of grass and a bunch of sheds. So, naturally, we decided to restore it to what we imagined it once looked like. Want to see months of creating working gardens, flower beds, an orchard and the greenhouse of our dreams? Wonder what thousands of daffodils planted one at a time looks like? Our vision took months to create but you can watch it all magically come to life here!

Hi there, Master Gardener here. The daffs in the planter box have less room for their roots to grow, so they’re pushing out leaves/blooms earlier. The bulbs in the terra cottage pots are likely growing stronger/deeper roots before sending up leaves and blooms. Next year, you can plant the planter box a few weeks later and the two bloom cycles should catch up to each other. Anyway, lovely (and prolonged) display this way too!

Brand new here. I can fantasize about your estate and gardens. The gardens make a home. How about planting a big crop of French garlic? The kind that make fabulous aioli. At first, plant enough for your own use. Next season, consider a cash crop. Build your reputation as you go. Probably will need a fortress to keep the bunnies and deer out. Life is good with home-sourced garlic. Cheers from Colorado. xo

Love your huge garden and the green house is perfection! It’s important to balance working inside your beautiful reno with time outside in the garden. One suggestion … buy sealant for the clay pots. You spray it on the inside of the pot and it reduces the amount of water that leaks through the pot so not as much watering is required. 😎🦘

Yew hedges can tolerate cold winds, but only if they grow up in them and establish the right root system. If you have your heart set on yes I would recommend getting tiny ones (less than 2 years old) and letting them grow in place. If you want to transplant something bigger for instant impact maybe consider a living willow hedge? Or if you want a dark green maybe holly? Edited for spelling!

Terracotta pots - They can be problematic for growing stuff (ie look good but crap with regard to water retention around the roots). So try sealing the inside of them with a pot sealer or water proof agent. That way the plant roots don't dry out as fast and you will have much better success. I use that black liquid rubber paint stuff you use for wet areas. Paint it across the bottom and maybe 2/3rd of the way up the inside of the pot so you don't see it when you put soil in.
@mytinyestate
@mytinyestate 3 ай бұрын
That is an AMAZING TIP and actually I did hear about that, someone told me to line them with plastic inside but ai like the waterproof agent better. I certainly need them to retain more water for this growing season ☺️
@hispid1
@hispid1 3 ай бұрын
@@mytinyestate Its all about how the root systems dry out and if that causes plant damage. Most plants like a consistent root moisture so drying out then sudden wet, then dry again, causes root dieback. Likewise - sometimes the roots just overheat and bake. You want to aim for constant moisture. Terracotta is notorious for releasing moisture faster when it's hot so if you seal the inside - it helps prevent that. There are special sealers for clay pots - but I just use that black waterproof stuff - Let it dry before the soil goes in.

You guys are so adorable and make such wonderful things that you have become my new addiction! I hope to see much more from you. A question about the daffodils in the trough: you put really a lot of bulbs and very close to each other, but there's no space for growth. They tend to spawn. Aren't there too many? Other bulbs (amaryllis) spawn so much and so big that they regularly break my terracotta and hard plastic vases, but that is another story.
