Sheldon was and is a brilliant character because he is a lovable jerk, meaning he can be an absolute jerk 24/7 but also has a lovable, naive side and this polar opposite combination in one person is very entertaining to watch! He was a perfectly constructed comedy/sitcom character! Jim Parsons was brilliant in the role, and without him, this show wouldn't survived even one season and that's a fact. Without him and Kaley to be exact, because Sheldon and Penny were polar opposites and their friendship, the development of this relationship through the years, was the best thing about this show! Plus, this complex, confusing, and entertaining personality of Sheldon, provided almost 100% of the comedy on the show, as other characters' jokes were almost always directly or indirectly connected to Sheldon, and that's why they were funny, Sheldon was a constant source of comedy inspiration on the show and provided the context for the jokes. This is why people loved him, and this is why he became the most popular character out of all and got his own spin-off show. Without the media and audiences' admiration, the TV executives and producers would have never given him a spin-off, these things are meticulously measured by numbers and data by the studios and production companies. So the haters are in sometimes vocal minority online, but these people don't understand precisely that Sheldon's whole persona had to be constructed this way for comedy's sake, and it worked brilliantly. Yes, in late seasons it was worse because of the material fatigue, something that all long-running TV shows suffer from, and The Big Bang Theory is among the longest-running American TV shows ever, with 12 seasons.

Sheldon shtick in the early seasons is much more likable and enjoyable for a few reasons. It hadn’t gotten old, he would still pay for his behavior at times, and it still made sense the gang would hang out with him. When he was still pulling the same selfish crap by s7 it was harder to excuse. I don’t care if Sheldon saved Lenard’s life one time, that doesn’t make him a slave to Sheldon for life
