Wait I recognise those characters. Sally the Witch? Cutie Honey? This is a really strange crossover of oldschool anime girl protagonists but with such star power there's no way this would've been unnoticed in Japan, haha.

I though the same. I thought: "WTF does Cutie Honey doing here? Is it because she's just a magical girl that is not Sailor Moon and really wanted to do something with her IP since she was forgotten for a decade at that time? That franchise had already suffered with identity crisis of what the target audience was just like most of Go Nagai's work.

I absolutely love this game. I remember playing this for the first time on a PS1 demo disc. It was new years eve, at someones house who I didn't know (likely one of my mum's friends) and my uncle and I were going through the PS1 stuff and we played te demo of this for about an hour. One of the few good childhood memories I have XD

Larry, i find your comments on so many youtube videos that I watch that I'm starting to wonder whether you are; a) a part of the youtube algorithm that has become sentient and has created a deep fake of itself so it can comment on every video, even going as far as sending a T-1000 Guru Larry into the past to appear on gaming segments from ancient tv shows b) one of my own demons made manifest, crawling around the web leaving entertaining comments to remind me that there are always funnier, more intelligent people than myself, crushing my nascent self confidence before dragging me back to hell c) spending too much time on youtube? Or is that me? I can't tell anymore

@@dexocube Larry is the video game equivilant of Ricardo Autobahn (Well, for me)... he pops up everywhere when you least expect it, like he's just following you around. Also, loved this game to the point I created a wrestling character with the name Prana Devil back when e-feds were a big thing still.

@@dexocube the efeds were fun. I ran one for quite a while. Always new characters, no real life ones. As for Ricardo Autobahn, I love his stuff, I'm an absolutely huge Spray fan, and am friends with him after meeting him after a gig. A very good bloke. Creates great music too.

Oh wow, as soon as I saw the six legged rhino I had memories flood back of playing unholy war donkeys years ago. I'd forgotten a few of the characters but razorfane, killcycle & your ex all rang a bell for me. Thanks for the Nostalgia trip Octi!

seems a lot like Star Control 1 but with monsters, Star Control being another Toys for Bob game so yeah, makes total sense

yeah my thoughts too... It makes sense. This game oozes Paul Richie. ( Toys for Bob co-founder ) He also made Mail Order Monsters for the commodore 64 in 1985 which is extremely similar in concept.

I can remember playing unholy war on a ps demo The rhino was my go to character for it On the demo it was the one on one arena battle so I didn’t know about the board aspects of it

The only other time I saw a copy of this game was at my cousin's house. He loved this game and I started to love it as well. Any time I went over there, we played this more times than not. Since then I have only heard it mentioned once or twice in passing.

Played this like crazy back in the early 2000s. I also still have my copy. It was 🔥 back then, its still 🔥 nowadays. And somehow I still got the skills 😅

As much as I enjoy your reactions to some of the legitimately horrible games you've subjected yourself too, there's always something wonderful and magical about seeing a KZfaqr just kick back and be like "Hey, here's a game I really like that you may not have heard of." and the entire Bandai Namco thing with the one really cute anime girl that I'm suddenly way too into was just the icing on the cake! Wonderful job, Octavius!

I like your goth finger armor. Reminds me of Acid Burn from Hackers. Toys For Bob is perhaps best known for StarControl, which was a lot like this except in space. And you fought with starships instead of lads, in a manner similar to Spacewar or Asteroids.

You can't use the teleporters when killcycle uses kamakazi. He literally says "teleporters offline". Best to be quicksilver with the shield, or Tesla with his random teleporting

I remember having a demo for Pandemonium that I loved playing back when it came out, though I later discovered that they really did use that absolute best part of the game as a demo. The rest of it didn't look anywhere near as cool.

I'd like to point out, teleporters become deactivated during Killcycle's kamikaze ability. If they were still active, that'd make Killcycle even worse.

Well, I don't know about the other magical girls but the tall one is Cutie Honey, which doesn't kinda fit honestly. Honey is an android(well, a gynoid, female humanoid robot) that has the power to change outfits and gain skill associated with them (she changes into overalls and suddenly she can fix your car! She changes into a nurse outfit and now she can patch you up! You get the idea) with the pink haired swordsman being her "battle" outfit. The weird thing is that she's both clearly adult and a bit lewd, with her ability(called Honey Flash) often used to not quite involuntarily flash her love interest and her outfits often being torn to shreds. So why the hell is she there? Sheer star power, I guess, being the creation of Go Nagai and thus Mazinger's little sister opens you a lot of doors.

You can't use teleporters during Killcycle's Kamikaze. His on-board computer explicitly states that the teleporters are offline.

Paul Reiche III, who designed the game, also designed Archon (and Star Control, which is similar). He's currently working on a sequel to Star Control 2 aka The Ur-Quan Masters so if people are interested in a game that has aspects of the Unholy War design philosophy, they should check that out (note that he had nothing to do with Star Control 3 or Star Control Origins).

Aw poor killcycle isn't completely useless. He has a few favourable match ups (map dependant). Also, on the PSX version I had at least, you couldn't dodge his kamikazi with the teleporter pads. He even muttered 'teleporters offline' when he started his dive.

Killcycle can actually delete a megaprana even. Just do bombs right before it latches onto you and each one will hit. They keep dropping even after megaprana kills you. For that reason you want to die as high as possible. The attack will continue until you land and explode. Wasp is fast enough to strafe-turtle so many fighters. Only one wasp is really weak against is mogalin. Mogalin's main range attack will slap wasp to death. Depending on the zone wasp can kill everything. Cept mogalin.
