I have been using the UT61E+ as my primary multimeter for more than a year now and in this video I will discuss what I like and dislike about this meter. All in all it's an excellent meter to have.

Kerry, thanks for this REX about your UT61E. It's very interesting. I own an UT71D since 2017. I also encoutered issues to establish a link with my PC. After having exchanged with my seller, I had to wait for a new IR/USB interface (different from the first one). This problem was known by UNI-T. When the vendor received the new interface, he sent me one, and since then I have not had any problems. That being said, I am very pleased with the accuracy and resolution of the UT71D, as well as the recording of the measurements.

I agree with all your points on this meter! The power consumption is my biggest gripe but I still love this meter for what it does and its price range.

Great review mate love the probe response time! I've got mixed feelings about some of the UNI-T gear as you basically get what you pay for; The biggest failure for me was a broken voltage socket probe. That's basically a death wish playing with mains wiring. To explain how I realised my instrument was crap: Typically (domestically) I test for mains rated voltage then put it into continuity mode to out balance the rcd taken it offline. This never worked but joys of the NCV I still knew it was energised! Wouldn't want to see a fellow brother hurt that's all.

Thanks for measuring the power consumption, very helpful. For comparison, on my Kaiweets KM601, which also uses AAA batteries (3 of them), I'm getting 33 mA active draw and 0.01 mA when it's off (can only be turned soft-off). The standby draw is not concerning, given that it will deplete a full set of AAA batteries only in >10 years, but the active power draw only allows for ~36 h of active use which I think is quite low. That's what you pay for a large display with a backlight that's permanently on.

I just bought one.$100Cdn on Ali so not too bad. I tested it against my standards and it is far more accurate than my Amprobe 37 or my Klein M700. Like it so far.

Another excellent video Kerry! Hope you are well! I've been looking for a new meter and have watched a ton of reviews of yours, as well as a few other KZfaqrs. I narrowed down my choices to 3 Uni-T meters: UT117C, UT139E/S, and UT61B/D/E. I ruled out the UT61 series because of the insensitive NVC function as well as the dial selector sometimes going in between functions. It really came down to the other two models for me. I chose the 117C because it seems to resolve the issues I mentioned here with the UT61; I don't know if the UT139 resolves the dial issue, but the NCV function seems to be more sensitive than the UT61. At the moment, the pricing on both the UT139 and UT117 is $80, with the UT61 at about $90. Let me just say that there are too many meters out there, even if you consider just one company (Uni-T). Maybe you could do a video on the different lines of meters, and why one would choose one line over another.

Been buying those Uni T probes, they are very nice as upgrade for meters with poor probes, as they do handle rough use quite well for the price you pay.

@@ozzymandius666 Nowhere. These 20 A golden tip probes are really phantastic, but not available anywhere. Kerry missed to mention their very low resistance - 20 A wire inside...

I'm sold. Sadly, I am watching this about a month after my 3-month old $40 Habotest HT118 died. I must have had some static on my body and simply turned it on, all the lights flashed and that was it.. no display, nothing. It was the same model as the Kaiweets (or whatever) DMM 😞

Hello, Kerry I would like to know if I can use the rechargeable Eneloop or Eneloop Pro Ni-MH batteries (1.2V) as the power supply, instead of the 1.5V alkaline batteries, for the UT61E+? Thank you for your time.
@KerryWongBlog

Why using rechargeable when regular batteries are so cheap? That said, it will work with NiMH batteries. NiMH batteries has pretty high self-discharge rate and aren't really suitable for these low current draw devices.

Enveloop is an excellent battery brand and they have very low self discharge, so you can use them for this purpose. Nevertheless there is a detail you must take into account, as follows. The plateau voltage of the NiMH battery cell is 1,2V, which is much lower than the one of an alkaline cell. As these cells are connected in series, this difference is getting even more higher. For example, if the multimeter works on 4 AAA cells, if they are alkaline, the sum of their voltages will stabilize around 6V or there about, while the same sum will be 4,8V for the NiMH cells. This means that you can use the NiMH cells when they are fresh charged and their sum voltage is 1,35V/cell, namely 5,4V for 4 cells. The point is that you will need to charge them more frequently than usual, as the multimeter, being calibrated for alkaline cells, will consider them as exhausted and it will work mostly with the "low battery" indicator energized. Other than that, there is no problem at all. As regards the rechargeable cells themselves, you need a really smart charger (and I propose you the Panasonic BQ-C 17 ,or 54, which are both affordable and slow charging rate chargers), for the longevity of your cells. These chargers recognize the charge level of the cell put on them to be charged, therefore cutting the charging process at the proper time (I.e. much sooner than a standard charger), protecting your cells. Keep in mind that you will need to recharge almost fully charged cells, for the reason I already explained. Therefore the reliability of your charger must be confirmed in order to extend their useful life...

Hello, Would you mind taking a minute to answer my question? I am writing to you to seek your advice on the purchase of a multimeter for measuring small values on the order of millivolts and microamps. I am considering two models: the UT61B+ with a 6000 display count and the UT61E+ with a 22000 display count. I understand that the display count refers to the maximum number of digits that can be displayed on the multimeter's screen. However, I am still unsure of the practical difference between the two models. Would you be able to provide me with some guidance? Thank you for your time and consideration.

I took a look at the specs, yes both the 61B+ and 61E+ have a 0.01mV resolution in the mV range. The higher counts come into play if you are measuring between 60 and 220 mV. For 61B+ because it's a 6000 counts meter, you will only have 0.1 mV resolution instead of the 0.01 mV resolution you get with the 61E+. Similar concept applies to the current ranges as well. Hope it helps.
