The unibody vs body on frame debate has been going on for decades, but quite frankly, they are both good designs with different trade-offs. Body on frame vehicles are typically larger ones like trucks, SUVs, and full size vans. However, before the 80s, almost all vehicles were bodies on frames. Unibody vehicles are now typically coupes, sedans, crossovers, small SUVs, and there are even some pickup trucks now! The type of vehicle frame you have will have an affect on handling, off-road capabilities, towing capacity, and more.

Still don't understand why ladder frame is best for off-roading because once you attach the body to the ladder frame it became one single unit then how it differs from Monocoque in off-roading

A very pithy video which sadly many can't or won't make anymore so I am very appreciative for that. Imho the trucks with short beds are good for transporting a small delivery (such as moderate sized vehicle parts from an auto parts store to a mechanic) and not much else compared to a full sized truck bed. I'd say a person would be better off getting a SUV or van instead unless there are some insurance or cost benefits for a short bed truck.

A unibody is designed to cost you more money in repairs after an accident. Do yourself a favor and get a body on frame Vehicle

Well, in a big crash unibody protects passengers much better. Life is much more important than money, and much stiffer but energy absorbing unibody is not made for crashing for fun, but to protect you in pile-up, rollover etc.

Tube frames are actually notoriously unsafe and are used solely because of weight. It's important not to confuse a tube frame with a roll cage, which is a chassis addition that reinforces the passenger compartment with metal crossbeams. Roll cages can be done to any frame type, but a tube frame replaces a unibody.

This toyota corolla have will be the very last unibody car I ever buy. Because with a very very light 10 mile per hour tap. I am now out over $4000 worth of body damage to the front end? Including a bit unibody frame. Which is not even a frame. If I were driving a 1500. Chevy Silverado or bigger with an actual full Box frame. It's fine i'm I might be looking at maybe a little bit of scratching on the bumper. But considering the fact i'm driving a unibody car you have to have a towed. And I repeat this is my last unibody vehicle from now on I'm buying nothing but a big solid heavy truck. I don't want to be stranded on the side of the road after an accident. I want to actually Be able to drive home.

Okay, here I come with a very important part of the body on frame design and why governments like it so much for their vehicles. It is sturdy and easy to reinforce. Most police and law einforcement vehicles have the risk of ending up in a situation where they absolutely have to impact another vehicle one way or annother. So, having a very simple to understand frame structure is key to reinforcing the vehicle and adding things like a push bar/ bull bar/ ram bar that allows to perform those tasks. Ground clearance is also a nice addition to that, with a body that can be spaced up from the frame, there is no need for suspension upgrades to make a taller vehicle and acomodate larger tires if needed (more of an off road feature than law einforcement, but certain agencies like border patrol may benefit from that). A damaged panel doesn't compromise the integrity of the vehicle structure on most cases. Why? Because the strenght is in the frame, not the body, so a bent part doesn't compromiste the vehicles ability to keep going reliably in most cases. And yes, the structural capacity of surviving a roll over is in the body and not the frame, but that is the only thing that could handicap the vehicle if only the body gets damaged. So, my question is why manufacturers don't make mid size SUV'S suitable for police departments in a body on frame style? A direct competitor of the Toyota 4Runner from an american manufacturer would be amazing. It would be like a 1st gen dodge durango which was quite sturdy, could be very fast, much more nimble than a full size SUV and just heavy enough to pack a serious punch in case of collision with annother vehicle. There are many police departments i Mexico that use the Tacoma due to the managable size, body on frame construction, ground clearance and the practicality of having a bed is a plus, but they would absolutely love to have a police pursuit/interceptor variant of the 4 runner available with a powerful engine available instead of having to go for a durango or an explorer. Something chevy, Ford and Dodge should think about for their next gen mid size SUV'S (and dodge already has the frame for the wrangler and gladiator there, they just need to develop a fully independent suspension for that frame and design a masculine angry looking body for it to sell it like it is nobodys business.

It is. Why F1 cars have monocoque, instead of ladder frame?
@robd1859

A unibody is a piece of shit and they have no strength or rigidity and you will have to pay thousands of dollars to fix the vehicle. If you have a body on frame they're usually a lot cheaper to fix and don't cost no where even close to fix. I highly recommend a body on frame very heavy vehicle. If you want something that will survive a fender bender.
