Thank you for posting this. Can you cut the pleated material out and examine it closely, while flattened? Maybe that would tell some kind of a story. Also, can you flush the filter "paper" out with some kind of solvent? It would be interesting to see if one captured more foreign material than the other.
@CarsSimplified
@CarsSimplified 6 сағат бұрын
I'm not sure if I have any way of doing the solvent thing safely right now, but I can definitely do the further teardown. I have a few other brands I can throw in and I'm working on a big oil filter video that should come out some time later in the year that will touch on this subject as well.

I bought myself a replacement EGR valve on Amazon for less than USD$50 and will be replacing the stock one in my 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan with just shy of 200,000 miles. I figured, eh, what's the point in trying to clean it when it's only $50 for a brand spankin' new one, and the one that's in there now is over 16 years old. If it was only 6 years old, I'd just clean it, but that's not the case. Going to be installing it tomorrow. :) Also cleaned the throttle body and MAF sensor for the very first time and it's looking brand new as well.
@CarsSimplified
@CarsSimplified Күн бұрын
I would hang on to the old one for a while just in case, but if it's a decent one you bought, having it not just clean but all fresh parts is a nice way to go! EGR valves are put through real demanding work with all those heat cycles and the carbon/soot build-up.

There's nothing more expensive than a bargain oil filter. Walmart sells some OEMs finally. But you simply cannot trust ANYTHING you buy online unless it comes from a very reputable source. OEM from the dealership is well worth the money. I do not purchase any filters from eBay or Amazon after too many questionable products arriving. The lack of a proper anti drainback valve on those inverted filters have killed many a Subaru engine.
@CarsSimplified

Definitely seems like a safe way to go! I also saw the OEM Subaru filter at Wal-Mart recently and picked one up. It was one of the black Tokyo Roki (nice) filters, but not the sought after made in Japan version.

I’d say counterfeit. Anybody can sell on Amazon/eBay. Although Amazon is convenient one must look very carefully at the part to ensure it’s legit if possible. Alternatively one can use reliable authorized / OE distributors. That’s stinks man! Glad you caught it though 👍🏼

Indeed, I have been digging deep into the oil filter market lately, and while I haven't found any more sketchy sources, people do seem to come across them from time to time! I am hoping to have an in-depth video on the subject later this year!

I always check who is the seller under the "Sold by" and if they comply with Amazon's standard return policy before purchasing. Although, idk if Amazon will glady accept return for already used oil filter but maybe its more likely if it can clearly be proven its an counterfeit.

Dealers definitely seem like a reliable source for genuine parts! Somewhat recently Subaru had some supply issues with oil filters so there are a lot of different "genuine" filter numbers out there now for my Crosstrek. Baldwin seems to be going for the professional market, so I never see them in the typical retailers near me.

I may be incorrect but, While cranking the voltage available can fall below 8-9 voltsso reducing that can cause parts of the system to not work IE fuel injectors. If I'm wrong please let me know. RP
@CarsSimplified
@CarsSimplified 2 күн бұрын
Engine cranking can certainly drop the voltage a lot, with your range definitely being possible, but it also varies with battery condition. I am not sure how common 5V fuel injectors are (I believe most are 12V) but the controller is likely running at 5V. I don't recall if I mentioned it in the video, but the way a lot of voltage regulators work, if the voltage supplied to them drops too close to 5V, the output voltage that should be at 5V begins to drop. It may be something like 6V input means 4.8V output, but it will depend on the voltage regulator component used, and that's generally well beyond what most people are diagnosing. Digging up spec sheets for individual components can be done, but it's often time consuming.

I'm not sure what you mean; are you asking what button I was pressing when the battery in the key fob was dead/out? The start/stop button of the car. If the car's 12v battery is dead, nothing is going to start it without a jump start or new battery.

Thanks for making an awesome video on this! I installed the filter correctly with the airflow pointing down (as directed for my car). When installing, it seemed that it fit better with the mesh being vertical, rather than horizontal. Does it matter which way the filter is facing (horizontal/vertical), as long as the airflow direction is correct? The reason I bring this up is that I bought a cabin filter from a third party, not an OEM version and the one I received seems to fit better with the mesh pointing vertically (from the cabin filter door opening). Thanks in advance!

I am trying to figure out, from an engineering perspective, how the indirect sensor works? Here's my theory. If tire pressure is low, the tire will have to rotate faster to complete a full revolution for any given speed (because the radius, and consequently the circumferential travel, of the tire is smaller).
