hi everyone I'm Garrett from zip scanners where we make scanning easy today I'm going to compare the unit in SDS100 and the Whistler TRX-1 these are the two newest handheld scanners on the market the TRX-1 was launched in the summer of 2016 and the SDS100 was launched two years later in the summer of 2018 the SDS100 is by far our best selling scanner but the TRX-1 isn't that far behind the three main differences between the SDS100 and the TRX-1 are also the three main reasons why the SDS100 is more popular than the TRX-1 one the SDS100 is the newest handheld scanner on the market all but solidifying its place as the best scanner on the market by default - we've said it so many times that I started mumbling it in my sleep but the SDS 102 handles simulcast distortion better than any scanner to date and three the SDS100 is GPS capable the TRX-1 is getting long in the tooth when you consider how consistent uniden has been with their product launches and you compare that to Whistler well Whistler announced on Radio reference that they have terminated the production of the TRX 100 and TRX 200 the TRX won a nearly three-year old scanner will remain whistlers newest and best handheld device for the foreseeable future so this could insinuate that this is where the GRE RadioShack Whistler legacy ends so Whistler seems to be blazing a path for unit into walk down alone they could be working on something else that will rival the TRX-1 the SDS100 and all of whistlers previous scanners to this point but at this time we have no way of knowing which direction their head now I'll go through some of the similarities and differences in a little more detail and take these things out of the box all right so I have both scanners out of the box side by side with remtronix antennas which we highly recommend as an aftermarket antenna it improves reception by up to 200% the first thing I'm going to do is power on both scanners at the same time to see which one boots up first so turn it on so the Whistler starts a little bit quicker there goes through the screen but it slows down there so something to consider in the first startup stages of the SDS100 you have to enter your time zone the date and the time so they're relatively the same in speed I know these aren't iPhones and androids but it's something to compare so a few things about these scanners both our handheld phase 2 scanners meaning they can monitor digital analog pretty much anything the TRX-1 cannot handle simulcasts the TRX-1 is not GPS capable so both have SD cards I'll show you the location battery pack here so this battery is bigger than it was the first batch of scanners came in as a hour battery life as opposed to the four that the SDS100 owners started with and this is the SD card location is how you unlock it this is an 8 gig SD card and be careful with this class here it's a very delicate I haven't broken any yet it's a miracle that I haven't but it's an interesting location it could get damaged and I don't know and I don't think I liked the location of the SD card it could become corrupted or broken personally don't really like the Balch in the back the big battery I wish they had modified the smaller battery to have a better battery life but this is what it looks like now and those are the cards we've been dealt and the TRX one takes four double A batteries these are the batteries that we sell there lupa sell rechargeable batteries

@@user-jt5vm3mi1w Absolutely great! High learning curve with this one it seems(as with other scanners too I assume). But that’s what makes it fun to me. Pretty bland text menu but it’s simple and straightforward on that part and it works. Have it set as a default scan list for my own county. Then can include other county scan lists if I’m on the move. The LED is kind of cool to program. Have it set to cherries and berries for police and flashing red for fire and so on. Really wish there were more than 2 companies that made scanners I think it’d help drive the price down and actually help overall development on these things. But overall good scanner.

I ordered the TRX-1 from you guys and got the upgraded Antenna and 1 county programed. Love the TRX-1!! I can hear everything around me now! Took a while to figure EZ Scan (not so EZ scan lol) but did get it figured out. Zip Scanners top notch company with top notch customer service!! Oh as far as the Case for it, I love it! can take it off and put it on easily! Feels like a heavy duty Otterbox case.

The company I work for is an authorized kenwood dealer/ service center, we also sell scanners. I always recommend the whistler over the uniden, we built the radio systems for most of the city’s, and counties in my area they are all NXDN, and a few analog here and there. I’m sitting here as I type this with my whistler TRX-1 scanning listing to all the NXDN traffic, they pick it up fine. Also the uniden scanners require you to buy licenses that the whistler already comes with. I recommend the whistler over the uniden any day of the week. To me it sounds just as good as my NX-5000 series UHF and VHF radios.

my sds came with a bonus , the time bomb cold solder issue , & here in canada no one wants to touch it for repairs , in reading about it and those that have worked on it , it has been said , " there are two types of sds 100 owners , those that experienced the cold solder joint issue , & those that will experience the csj issue in the future " its a shame because I liked the radio , I might give the trx a try

I have to concur with EZScan being anything but. I just gave up and loaded by ZIP code, which slows things down as I'm in a busy area (Northern VA, just south of DC). It doesn't help that Whistler won't cooperate with outside software developers. That said, I don't see the SDS-100 doing anything my TRX-1 won't do, and in fact, I would have to pay extra to get it do cover the same things. I prefer the AA batteries over the proprietary (or at least, not available at the 7-11) one found in the SDS-100. I have complaints, but don't see those 100% answered by the SDS-100.

Zip Code programming in densely populated areas can frontload the scanner and cause transmission issues. Not to mention you're getting absolutely everything in your area. It's just not a good way to monitor in most cases. I do wish the unit could be powered by AA batteries, but Uniden benefits from selling external battery chargers and extra batteries that they custom manufactured for the unit. It's not perfect, but it does have a few tally marks more than the TRX-1 in my book.

Unfortunately we don't have access to a database that would allow us to program for the UK. We ship there, we just can't program for your area.

You're technically supposed to take off the back plastic piece on the TRX-1 rubber back case, you're doing it with it attached, which is why its difficult to do. Remove the colored plastic back plate first, then take the rubber piece off and it's easy. I had the TRX-1 and I returned it for the BC436HP. Did not like the Home Patrol either, finally got the SDS 100. I'm happy, I'm also not alone. Many, if not all people start with or started with other scanners, usually cheaper ones and graduated to the SDS 100. Just buy the SDS 100, unless all you need is analog, you'll thank me later, don't do the try the cheaper one first, you'll end buying two or three cheaper scanners, only to always wonder about the SDS 100, lol. Just get the SDS 100 to begin with and save your money!

Correct. I have a TRX-1 and I have messed with the settings for simulcast systems. You need to put the scanner in a different location or be close to a tower, so it overrides the others. If I am home, I cannot pick up the county system and when I go to a friend's just three miles away, then the county system comes in clear. The SDS does not have that problem. The TRX-1 is a very nice scanner. I wish the talkgroups were sorted like the older Pro-96. It would make it so much easier to change the channel.

Trust me, when you are trying to monitor a 5 site simulcast system, you want a scanner that will handle the phasing correctly or it will drive you bat sh*t crazy.

In my opinion the sds100 is much better, large color screen vs little b&w, can recharge battery while plugged in, most of the time it is sitting on my desk so wider base is better so it doesn't tip over as easily., much better at picking up simulcast stations in my area, when on the go with GPS option it automatically picks up new stations, easier to program

Add 100.00 to get an extra battery that to me makes the SDS a deal breaker add the known issues of the SDS and the poor support from UNIDEN I'd buy the Whistler

When were these changes made? Because I sent in a unit not too long ago and they fixed the unit where it does work but they did it by swapping out the board but never replaced the paid upgrade and when asked what happened with the upgrade they said they would not transfer it so I paid the repair fee but I was left with a lesser unit that I'd have to buy the upgrade again and the end is different That's not a issue what is the issue is losing something I had paid for So sorry but they need to change more

I am not fond of having to use a special battery in any product. I rather be able to buy regular type batteries. Ez scan program is a pain to work with. These companies are full of crap charging for "upgrades"....what a crock...

I hear you, I'd be nice if it ran on 2-4 rechargeable AA batteries, but the life of this battery pack is much greater than any AA battery brand. As far as the software upgrades, Whistler got it right by decoding for free.

Well said!! Especially when you just spent $600 - $700 on a scanner.... Uniden / Bearcat should cover them fees for the customer that pays that kind of money, I wish Radio Shack didn't go out of business because bearcat was garbage and could never compare to radio shack and radio shack would've never charge for them upgrades. also I noticed Uniden / Bearcat didn't get popular until Radio shack left... almost as if radio shack gave Uniden their technology

Both brands have strange trajectories. They've been trending in complete opposite directions ever since the SDS100 came out. Upgrades are still an issue, but Uniden has the upper hand at present.

This TRX-1 I bought from you is garbage. Not your fault, but I really regret buying it and not spending the extra money on the SDS-100. Not to mention my city encrypted everything worth listening to, two weeks after I wasted my money on this !!! 😂😂😫🤬🤬🤬

Dylan Darbyshire Orange County law enforcement has been encrypted for at LEAST 10 years. All of the fire, ems, hospital, and city public works were all unencrypted still but that all changed about 6 months ago and everything is encrypted now. Orange County scanning is dead. All you have left is CHP, for now at least.
