I got these to use for bathrooms for motion and humidity. Was going to use them to turn a smart switch on with Home Assistant for a light and exhaust fan. The problem I ran I to was the temp/humidity reports back to home assistant ever 15 minutes of so and the have the exhaust fan run way longer than needed. I do use them for door sensors in other parts of the house and they work great.i ended up just building so.e temp/humidity sensors for the bath using a esp32 device and a couple of sensora

Yes, I found the same. Temp, ambient light and humidity are updated every 5min for me, but the door sensor (and alarm I'd hope) is immediate. I also use Esp32 or SwitchBot sensors where I need more immediate feedback.

A few things. 1. That automation you made is gonna get triggered even when you switch on the lights in your office, then the lux sensor is gonna think it's day and open your blinds. So, for blinds, best option is still getting the actual sunrise/sunset time according to the location from a service and using that to trigger the blinds. Or you could buy an outdoor lux sensor, but that still is gonna get triggered by outdoor/porch lights,etc. 2. Those unavailable entities in home assistant, i believe if you click on them, you can force enable them to get some more data in home assistant. 3. A few automations that came to my mind, a. At night, if you office is unoccupied, you can create a toggle switch in home assistant to basically arm the motion sensor, so after that if any motion is detected until morning, then someone might have gotten in. b. You should also set very high temp/humidity alerts in home assistant. Very high temp could indicate a fire.
@LarsKlintTech
@LarsKlintTech 5 ай бұрын
You are absolutely right. It was an attempt to create an automation that wouldn't take too long 😂 I do have an outdoor light sensor too, which I use for the outdoor lights on the whole farm. Those are good automation ideas too. I like the high temp one, as that fits nicely with a future video I have planner 😉

I've been using 4 of these for about a year not also integrated through HA and here's what I found. No mater how strong the BT connection is, these sensors tend to drop connection for several seconds and then reconnect. Clearly this causes issues with HA automation as the sensor goes from its current state to unknown and then back to current state. It is annoying. For example, if you walks into a room and expect the sensor to trigger a Lights On automation, it won't do it if its not connected. Then the thing connects and the lights come on. The delay can be significant. Second, these sensors are battery hogs. I replace my batteries at least once a quarter regardless of what sensors are turned on. Overall these sensors are perfect especially if you are in a UniFi Protect environment. However the items above have prevented me from buy additional sensors. Ubiquiti needs to improve the BT connectivity of these sensors or move to a WiFi connection over BT.
@LarsKlintTech
@LarsKlintTech 5 ай бұрын
Great observations Robert, and thanks for sharing ☺ I just checked and while the ambient light, temp and humidity update every 5 minutes, the motion detection should be instant, but I am also getting the occasional "unavailable". It isn't an issue for me as I only trigger on the motion detected event, but I see your point. With regards to the battery usage, that might be why the sensor drops off? To save battery. It is too early for me to make a call on it, but so far the sensor hasn't moved off the 95% battery level. I don't think Wifi is feasible. I have one for my mail box sensor, and talk about power hungry! They would need a much bigger battery I think, so would be a difficult thing to hide. So far, the sensor has worked exactly as I expected, and there are no actual drop-outs, like the Aqara units that I have to re-pair every 3-4 months.
@51av0sh
@51av0sh 3 ай бұрын
That's exactly right. I have 5 and face this issue constantly and consistently on ALL of them. They are the most unreliable sensors I have ever purchased. It really messes up my occupancy/presence automations since they take into account many different sensors but motion is the most important one and the heaviest variable in my bayes calculations
@urielpappilon
@urielpappilon 5 ай бұрын
tampering detection uses accelerometer and usually used in motion sensors to set an alarm when someone tries to mess with sensor by moving it in different position and etc. here it was clearly detecting motion of the door swing when opened/closed, but if you would put it on the door hinge and magnet on the door itself it could provide useful input if someone is trying to break the door itself or to put it down without disrupting open/closed state of the sensor
@LarsKlintTech
@LarsKlintTech 5 ай бұрын
In my case it won't fit the other way, but that makes sense using the accelerometer for that purpose. Although according to the manual, the accelerometer is meant for a garage door opener, so that would trigger the tamper detection constantly? 🤔
@urielpappilon
@urielpappilon 5 ай бұрын
@@LarsKlintTech not sure as i don't own one of these and aware of tampering detection only based on other sensors that i have, but I think that it would trigger tampering if someone would hit the door or smth, but would not trigger if it's also moving up/down (based on settings of where installed). One of my sensors for example also measures tilt in case when installed on window or non-standard door to distinguish positions of normally opened and opened just for ventillation, so i think it's mostly a setting/software config thing here.

Has Ubiquiti already planned to drop these Protect sensors? They're a very cool device. However, they rely on Bluetooth-supported access points. The new U7 line of access points does not have Bluetooth radios. As it stands, only the U6 line of access points and the Dream Routers are compatible.

I did look at these myself but opted to stay with my aqara ZigBee devices, yes it means i need 3 sensors to do the same job but they are very small i can have them in different parts of the room. What can I use it with in Protect though? There isn't anything I can trigger based on the values in the sensor, so for me it makes sense to add them to HA and use them there. I have 5 of these around my house. All within a few feet from a U6 access point. They are all constantly dropping out/offline for 15-20 seconds every few minutes. They are unfortunately the most unreliable sensors I own and I have bought/tried ALOT of different brands over the years. I really like Ubiquity products and didn't question these when I bought them, which is the reason I bought 5... and now I'm just waiting and watching the months pass by for a firmware update to hopefully fix them. Don't buy these if you (like me) rely on these for your home automation and expect them to trigger reliably.

Looks like a good sensor, theres just 2 things that stopping me from buying a bunch of them. I haven't seen other sensors that have the ones I want, I'm after lux, humidity and motion as the main ones. Haven't seen ones that do have all 3 of them in 1, which is why im considtering it, even with the price. 1. Like we talked about in your community post, they dropped bluetooth from the newer AP's which make me concerned if I bought a bunch of them now that when I go to upgrade me AP's it means they might be useless 2. The 5 min update is very slow, I want instant updates for door/motion (in HA), and like 30 second updates for the rest. Obvisually that would destroy battery life, but I'd rather run USB power to it and have the frequent updates, than have very slow updates, as well as a battery you've got to change
@LarsKlintTech
@LarsKlintTech 5 ай бұрын
Valid points. The door/window sensor is immediate, but I can't see a way to update temp/humidity/luminosity more frequent than every 5min. I don't know what will happen with the Bluetooth part. I have plenty of ways within HA to get BT connection to it, but don't think it will work that way. For now I will have the APs for some time still, so not an immediate concern.

Wonder your thoughts on the it being Bluetooth. I don't have a big house (1300 sq. ft.) and I have 2 APs (U6 LR, and U6 In-Wall), but I still have trouble with the sensors losing connectivity because my doors are not close to were my APs are. I really wish there was a better connectivity option.
@LarsKlintTech
@LarsKlintTech 2 ай бұрын
I don't think there was much of a choice for Ubiquiti to make it with another protocol. Bluetooth has the battery life needed, but less range. Using wifi would have compromised either size (to fit a big battery) or battery life. I would use Zigbee, which I have many sensors using, but UI don't have that in their repertoire.

I'm not sure how to feel about this thing. It looks nice but some of the sensors seem to negate each other. Things like putting a temperature and humidity sensor right where a door opens may well subject them to drafts and skew the readings so having them in a door/windows sensor doesn't seem to make sense. Considering the price, it seems rather wasteful to me since I can't think of any situation where I would want most of those sensors in the same place. The big minus for me is that it only works if I spend even more money on a UniFi wireless access point. If it was something like ZigBee, I might consider it

I've gone through the exact same mind exercise as you mate. It is a lot of sensors, and I can't for the life of me think of a scenario where you'd use all, so I can only conclude that isn't the main purpose. As I mention in the video, and as you say too, then I feel like I am missing out somehow. With regards to being in the Unifi world, that is part of the appeal/drawback, as it makes it super simple to set up. Unifi wants you in their eco-system, because then they can guarantee a good user experience they control. I get it, but I also like to tinker, so that is why the Home Assistant integration is so useful.
