In this video we go hands-on with the Unigine game engine. Traditionally used in simulations and engineering as well as benchmarks, Unigine has recently started offering a subscription version aimed at indie game developers. In this video we check out the game engine in action.

it's free now. They have a community edition like everybody else. I see massive potential in this engine it lacks some features but the results are so pretty and superfast. The help is limited, the documentation is good but for a complete beginner is pretty hard to get going with.

In your opinion, if you were to make the same project in ue4 and this, would there be much difference in performance? Also how is this engine's NPR capabilities? Can we get data from the lighting pass for example? Or should this only be used for photorealistic projects?

To be honest I never got into anywhere near the level of depth to make a performance judgment call like that. The framework itself though does seem exceptionally customizable so I doubt you'd have trouble wiring in NPR.

how are you going to get artists and animators to work with an engine thats not widely understood or adopted and isn't free to learn. i dont get it. the genius of unreal is they make it easy to learn with great documentation. you can have the best tech but if its harder to get to forget it these days. unreal's secret is documentation not necessarily tech. its accessible. 2cts

Same way it was done 10-15 years ago when everyone was using in house engines, they just learn to work with them. That's what a studio pays it's artists for, to produce art and to understand the systems they are producing art for.

@@mindspunk if your a small enterprise forget it. it wont be worth it for someone to do that. esp if your a contract worker. esp if you cant reliably pay people which goes on alot in small enterprises. big companies with big budgets sure. but indies you need to pull from a talent pool that already knows the tools. today things are very different than 10-15 years ago. i started working in the industry at looking glass tech on system shock 1. im still working in a big corp now. for them your right. i just question small operators drawing the talent with extra bars to adoption.
@marsmotion

@@harisg8120 i hope they understand this easy adoption model. free to learn pay to make $$ and document the shit out of it. documentation is a form of marketing things. also a community of people doing tutorials and vids to show others how to approach things is massively useful. its easy in easy out as people have to constantly shift hats these days to do anything. i personally would love to see more disruption in the engine category. we've had this big three for a while now. unity unreal cry etc. more players is good.

👎 Not been used for commercial games much 👎 Has it's own language instead of leveraging a good one 👎 Complex method of getting a test version 👎 Not free during development 👍 Pretty looking Unless you have a Texture artist, 3D artist, Level designer, Programmer, and proper backing I don't see it being worth picking up over the slightly less pretty looking but wildly more successful alternatives. I mean, if your a solo developer your probably not going to have the assets you need to make the game look that good.

Well maybe if there were cross platform programs before there were more people who would have used it. It isn't really hard to make programs cross platform nowadays, and it does put a strain on windows monopoly, which is good for the industry in general. So I ask again, why should they kill this feature? It is not very costly, and it is beneficial, and there are people who are using it, although not enough people in your opinion, even if no one was using it right now, it is a good feature to implement.

@@TheBlackbirdii People use unity and unreal because their licensing is available for small studios and individuals, take a look at the things backend and you will start to apreciate this engine, 64 bit floating point precision, 1:1 scale worlds, realistic weather and oceans out of the box. This engine isnt a traditional game engine but more of a simulation engine designed for people who want to build huge scale simulations and or sim games. Checkout the new free version its really damn decent, the only thing stopping me moving over to this engine right now is the lack of in depth tutorials. Unity/Unreal have more users currently so have more tutorials around the net etc.
