For more on this series of video, be sure to check out Parts 1-3. But in Pat 4, we begin with a FAST start from a dead stop with the UP 844 closer to Nunn, CO. We let go of the train for just a moment, but we catch it again as they head towards the Wyoming State Line at Carr. We catch the train at Terry Ranch, then over at Speer where they start the 10+ Mile-long shove down Track 3 into Cheyenne. We wrap up with them backing off P-4, as they begin the process of breaking the train down to complete the plentiful day on the high iron. Next stop: IDAHO! Thank you so much for watching! Rate. Comment. Subscribe. ENJOY!!! Copyright Nick Valdez Railroad Photography 2017.

My wife -and- my dog do not understand my 'addiction. The whistle takes me back to the night in Apr 61 as I was coming up grade on Rte 66 into Albuquerque hearing all the action down in the yards. Ahhhh nostalgia. Do I dare admit to weeping onto my beer? lol

Hats off to the United States of America for bringing back to life a giant of a juggernaut amongst steam engines of yesteryears to show its people of today its heritage and pride! The sheer size of this locomotive is mind-boggling! To reconstruct and re-run a steam engine of this gigantic scale must have cost the Union Pacific company huge amounts and awful toil and patience of engineers and workmen associated with its restoration as well as their steadfast dedication. But the people of the United States have resources to afford this kind of restoration and are known worldwide to be enthusiasts in restoring automobiles and motorcycles of past that lie in their junkyards. We see on the History TV channel successful restoration of Ford Model Ts and the Indian Chief motorcycles. I thank the presenters of this video clip for excellent photography and details.

Awesome video series! I am 53 and do not see the great want this country has to get rid of our past heritage, they seem to want to forget where this country came from. It seems that as diesel came in they scrapped most all of the old trains and couldn't get rid of them fast enough. Now they say we may have a EMP strike that will thrust us back into the days of no power and computers as it will destroy all exposed electronics. If that happens we will be wishing more of these old steam engines were refurbished and put in mothballs! Same with our old diesel ships and other machines that ran on steam.

Thrilling! Every segment! Fantastic videography; soft crossfades, steady recording. Could not have been better chasing the 844 live. And the audio; perfect. The 844s whistle is haunting, and terrifying; a prehistoric beast, a T-rex perhaps. (Speaking of terrifying, we're watching something approaching one million pounds, screaming down freight tracks at, what, 60+ mph? )Glorious. Thank you for bring it to us. (subscribed)

@@jimm3093 844 was already on oil before the last restoration
@jimm3093
@jimm3093 3 жыл бұрын
@@wowitskevin it had to be the furnace technology then. More efficient full burn in the firebox, fuel jet spray pattern, temperature control of the burn, and precise metering of the fuel flow. I’m certain they did fuel, air, temperature calculations to determine the best curve to match the driving piston load demands and conditions. If they had some sort of computer controlled PCM with sensors retrofitted into whatever they could, that would not surprise me either. A PCM would eliminate the need of a fireman; the operator would only have to turn a knob and the PCM would gradually and incrementally adjust the Johnson bar accoringly

What purpose do those high pitch screeching turbines perform? Are they the tender fuel pumps to force bunker oil into the firebox? How are those turbines powered? Or is that the function of the diesel locomotive? To all only as a generator to power the turbines?

Do these beasts "shuffle" down the tracks, like our old "R' Class locos here in Victoria, Australia, used to? The "R" Class, built in the UK, were 4-6-4 locos, mechanical coal stoking, high speed passenger and goods locos.

Yes, the 844 was converted to oil by the Union Pacific very early in her life, in 1945. The 4-6-6-4 Challenger No. 3985 has also been converted to burn fuel oil (in 1990). I personally think the oil conversion for the 4014 will work fine, especially since the Southern Pacific Cab Forwards burned oil and have a very similarly sized firebox.

I guess what he's trying to say is, since there is a 2,000 degree oil-burning fire in there, then it stays pretty toasty. It would probably be pleasant to be inside one of these in the winter, with it being that warm in there haha. Chris.

@brettany_renee_blatchley
@brettany_renee_blatchley 4 жыл бұрын
Yes! You still see these around, but many of them are all welded-shut**. They are not used as offices or shelter anymore, they are just something safe to ride when the engineer needs "eyes" in the back for a "shoving" move. **It is a cost-saving move, as cabooses are no longer needed for their former function. (Train crews are much smaller and safer with air brakes & radios and automatic Flashing Rear End Devices (FRED) to mark the train end and radio brake telemetry to the engineer. And there are computerized wheel inspectors trackside to estimate the health of the train.) Allowing employees inside the caboose would (by strict regulations) mean the cabooses would have to meet full, high-livability standards even if it was seldom used - very costly.

What's the meaning of the X in the number plate (X 844)?
@jimm3093
@jimm3093 3 жыл бұрын
Probably meaning it’s not a functional freight registered and rated unit number. Also, most of the unit numbers of retired locos are reused by newer locos that replaced them. The X allows them to use the number again but distinguish it from the current modern diesel-electric loco registered for freight duty using the same unit number.

The diesel-electric is probably needed to function as an APU to power the tender fuel turbines to feed fuel oil into the firebox. X844 certainly doesn’t have an onboard generator or PTO fast enough to turn such pumps.

For breaking in, X844 must pull the full load for proper wear-in. The Diesel-electric is probably only there to feed power to the tenders to power the fuel pumps. Plus as it idles behind X844, it’s part of the breakin load weight
@09JDCTrainMan
@09JDCTrainMan 2 жыл бұрын
The diesel is nothing more than extra weight to the steamer to pull. All the diesel did was provide dynamic braking.
