It is always a great joy to see footage of Union Pacific 844 in action, this engine is one of UP's prize possession examples of steam locomotives and is the only operating member of the UP's four surviving FEF class 4-8-4 type engines.

It's awesome to have the old girl give a flawless performance after her rebuild. Also I love how the fire fighters at Lasalle are busy taking pictures, lol!

Follow up question: When the UP 844 is doing 60 mph, how much of the work load is being done by the UP1989 Diesel / Heritage Locomotive? 😎

I have good memories of UP steam excursions coming through Greeley in the first half of the 1970s. Thanks for showing this video that the engine is still at work more than 40 years later. Born in the late 40s, I am a time traveler from the age of steam.

A very impressive video on two counts. 844 looks amazing. Did it look and run as well as this 72 years ago? Top Marks to UP Steam Shop. And this is one of the best quality video clips I have seen - the camera must be a real state of the art model - just 'pause' the clip and the still is superb.

Great to see the 844 performing its magic again and of course your video capture is excellent. I am looking forward to seeing her with the Rocky Mountains and hopefully the Cascade Ranges in the background. Will there be some kind of schedule available that you will follow in order to capture more footage of this lovely engine in America? Cheers from Australia.

Skip, my friend, you've done it again...... By far some of the best footage of all the UP Steam and Heritage operations....... Have to give it to the Steam crew for making 844 look her best after 3 long painful years of restoration and rebuilding, but I have to give it to you for the awesome highball running shots. Not sure what cameras you use, but damn if they don't make 844 look great

+Terminator X lol, apparently when it was converted, the fire couldn't be stoked evenly to build up adequate steam pressure and was converted back to coal. but the big boy they are restoring now has way more technology than available when it was retired in '62

Why is it on Northerns and Mountains that the connecting rod is attached to the second axle, whereas most locomotives with eight drive wheels have it on the third?
@SteyrM1912
@SteyrM1912 7 жыл бұрын
Most of them have large diameter drivers and extending the main rod to the 3rd driver would increase reciprocating mass. That would require heavier counter-weights on the drivers and would probably decrease maximum speed.

what is the fastest they run the engine these days, and in the past before the new rules that come into play in the 1990's, and does a hard run make her hotter or is that just coal fired engines like 1225 and 765, I know it was said when you ran them fast they get more effecent and the cutoff can be used to make it perform and really use that steam they run off the expanding nature.

Can anyone explain to me what those big blinders on the front of the engine are for? Are they to prevent the wind from buffetting the engineer, or is it something to do with how they want the headlight to not leak light off to the sides?
@jomama05
@jomama05 8 жыл бұрын
Smoke Deflectors, or elephant ears. The 800's were prone to having the smoke floating down towards the cab, so The UP put them on. Provides a draft so the smoke goes up and not down.

Okay. I saw in a documentary that the Big Boy got around this problem with a modified smokestack that changed the angle at which the smoke came out.

Are you talking about the Smoke Deflectors? Those are used to push the smoke away from the cab at highspeed. They are sometimes refereed to as "Elephant Ears". Much of the FEF Class had these Smoke Deflectors including the only other persevered FEF-3 No. 838. However they have been given to 844 since then. 838 is mainly used for spare parts.
@SteffenReichel
@SteffenReichel 7 жыл бұрын
Donatello, as many told you, these are SmokeDeflectors. The moving air by driving will be guided along the boiler and a little upwards, which prevents smoke and especially steam to get down aside of the boiler and flooding the cab. So on high speed, the signals stay visible - which is important. Some engines were very prone, some engines very not, so not all engines got those deflectors. You have large defelctors and small deflectors. In Germany we differ betwan big ones, called "Wagner" and small ones, called "Witte" deflectors, but there are also other deflectors, like very small ones beside the chimney. In cold winter this problem is awefull, because smoke isn't the problem - as a good fireman ensures the engine NOT to smoke, because smoke is wasting fuel - so here steam which is the major amout what comes out of the stack, will quickly accumulate in the cold air as white dense clouds and will whirl over the boiler down into the cab, making the seight of the fottplate staff nearly impossible... so hjere the deflectors generate an air stream, which prevents this, leading the steam up and above the cab roof, where it now can spread out, whitout being a disturbance to the footplate staff
