@@WallieB26 The dead end of the mall that you mentioned used to have the HESS'S department store anchor at the end of it. It is also longer than it appears. Where it looks like it ends with a store front there is another hallway on the other side of that store that has more store fronts and at the end is where HESS'S used to be. HESS'S is that store that you showed from the outside with the mirrored bricks. They added that whole end of the mall on around 1982. HESS'S was only open till about 1988 or so and closed. It was a higher end dept. Store. Where the shoe department is used to be a decent size food court and arcade. It got changed into a fashion bug around 1993 and the a shoe dept. A few years ago. Also the Penny's anchor was added on as well back in the early 1990s. That whole end of the mall was originally a GEE BEES dept. / grocery store it was awesome as well. They sold both food and dept store goods. In the eighties they got rid of the grocery part. You think the mall is awesome now. You should of seen it in its heyday. It even had fountains. Sorry for the long reply.

1985-1988, this place was a hangout for my friends, former band mates and I. 1995 I was there with a girlfriend of mine at the time on a date, a month before she was killed by a drunk driver. I came back to Uniontown last year to reminisce and was sad how dead the mall was. It was booming back then. I definitely miss the 80's and my former girlfriend.

The style of this mall is awesome. Nothing beats something like old school design. Unlike the modern flat, square designs of today. I've never been to Uniontown before. Maybe once things return to some sort of normal I'll make a trip to Pittsburgh and then down into Uniontown.

Because there are less people coming here to shop, the Uniontown Mall could possibly be repurposed as a large gym, with fitness stations and a big indoor swimming pool, along with healthy cafes (to encourage a healthy lifestyle). It could also be turned into a greenhouse to grow fruits and vegetables or maybe even a destination mall with rock climbing, and fun activities for families.

Presumably the reason smaller stores move to the opposite side of malls to where a JC Penny is located, would be the rent prices. Rent is likely a lot more expensive in locations that are close to a major retailer, because they draw the customers in.

The major problem in Oniontown is TOTAL LACK OF PLANNING! Drive around the New Salem Road/Matthew Drive area, and all you see are random stand alone stores and small groupings of shops. No rhyme or reason whatsoever. Look at Walmart--a dialysis clinic next door, a planned Honda dealership next to that, then Dick Sportsware and Hobby Lobby. A small strip of shops in front. That easily could have been a power center like Richland Town Centre in Johnstown. A small strip of shops anchored by Home Depot across the road from another small strip anchored by Target. Would have made too much sense to construct TWO big plazas to make for convenience. Aldi just built a new stand alone food store in Onion--the previous store was in the old Oniontown Shopping Center on Morgantown Road which also hosts a bank, dollar store, pharmacy, Big Lots, laundrymat, McDonald's, hair salon--you know, a place where customers can accomplish several errands in ONE location. Onion is now building ANOTHER stand along Route 40 with Starbucks and Primanti Brothers. Menards is coming in but it will be over the hill from Walmart. ANOTHER isolated store. If there was any planning in Oniontown, consideration would be given to people who don't have cars. The FACT bus depot is in the middle of nowhere and its sad to see people having to walk everywhere if they don't drive or have someone to take them around. For example, Aldi should never have been given a permit to build a stand alone store--they should have built at the mall in one of the anchor spaces or at the Target plaza. Despite all the stores in Onion, its easier to drive to Morgantown, Greensburg or Pittsburgh to shop since you spend more time driving and backtracking instead of finding what you need. Onion is good for destination shopping--you go to a certain store for a specific item; for comparative shopping it is necessary to leave the area.

This looks like a Dan Bell video. Also, that mall is more lively than the Hutchinson mall in Hutchinson, Kansas. Your friend you mentioned who sends you photos of that place being lively and bustling, more than likely has better knowledge of it. I see a lot of stores in that mall, especially big brand names, to consider it not much of a dead mall, but a mall that has been effected by the retail apocalypse just like many malls in America. I found this video interesting to watch and enjoyed your commentary.

WallieB26 it’s our second mall. I believe it was built in the early 2000’s. It’s quite boring and not very inviting. The first mall opened in 1976. They used buildings already there and covered over the street. It closed in 2001. I was a crazy photographer and documented the demolition. Over 5000 photos. All on film. It was very sad. The currant mall is like many across the county and can be considered a dead mall. Lost anchors in Sears, Younkers. Still have Dicks Sporting Goods, bed Bsth & Beyond and JC Penney’s. Several empty spaces. The old mall has charm and as a teenager in the early years we’ll it was my mall. Had a great arcade in the basement and plenty of good food restaurants.

Would it be practical to have these properties in some fashion rezoned as retail/residential? Could apartments of all sizes be constructed in portions that are unutilized areas? Possibly even retail/motels/extended stay type of units? I realize the red tape would have to be cut but who has a better Idea. Of course the type of housing/apartments residents would be in the income range of 50 to 75 thousands yearly income. Possibly condo type of units could be marketed. Lets see someone think outside the retail box for repurposing these properties. They seem in most cases to have priced themselves out of use.
