When your normal memory card isn't enough, you can get radical and portable with these Tamagotchi-esque Memory Cards by Sega and Sony. The VMU and PocketStation were both released within a very short time of each other, and ultimately had no major impact on the gaming industry. They were largely trying to ride the wave of other digital pets and micro game systems of the era, but they still found a way to be endearing to gamers and inspire some unique homebrew and revival attempts decades later.

At 0.25x speed your intro song sounds like something from film noir.

Sad to see not a single Digimon game used this feature

Great video on some oft forgotten devices. Quick aside in reference to the intro, I thought the 64 DD and Famicom disk were magnetic floppy disks rather than optical media, being able to read and write on the fly, and thus not needing a memory card.

You're correct, they both had read/write capabilities. Sorry if it seemed like we implied that they couldn't save. It was more or less just an example of the advent of the disc as a medium vs cartridges. Perhaps we should have been more specific since it was only compact discs that truly lacked save functionality since magnetic/floppy discs were able to have a more proper two-way data flow.

I still believe it is an absolute disgrace Sony never released PocketStation in the US. Their awful excuse? It was TOO POPULAR in Japan so the entire supply being manufactured had to go to the Japanese market. My god, in comparison to Japan, the US was basically living in the dark ages in the mid-90s. Their phones were further ahead, their game consoles were further ahead, they had digital satellite radio and television before we did. Ugh. Great video, btw. Not mad at you. 20 years ago I wanted this thing.

I totally get that, there's still a ton of stuff that is lost over in Japan that I'm mad I can't get. Even to this day. Perhaps I should look into a proxy or something to fence stuff for me back over to the states. Also yeah, totally a garbage excuse. But not surprising given typical Japanese business politics. They could have attempted some limited use even into the PS2. Because I learned recently that it can recognize the difference between a PS1 Memory Card and Pocketstation if you plug one into a PS2. It shows a cool 3D model for it and everything in the system's UI. They're still floating around if you want one, I enjoy using them as my primary PS1 memory card. They're so fun and niche. But I don't know if the price has changed over the last couple of years since I bought one or not.

Like the song in particular? As for the footage, it's just a montage of older episodes.

@@Game_and_Browse the montage. Its great! Its just random as all heck hahaha

@@jimmjimms yeah, I was more or less trying to mimick an actual TV show. The later episodes have been branded with a much shorter intro.
