Heavy Takeoff out of Chicago O'hare. Boeing 747-400. Flight from Chicago O'hare to Tokyo Narita. I got lucky and got a free upgrade to Buisness class on the Upper deck. Seat 15K to be exact. Channel 9 is included.
Takeoff out of runway 32L, full length. You know your heavy when you need full length out of runway 32L at Chicago. Great flight with United. It was a bumpy departure and holding the camera was kinda hard because the space between the seat and the window is big so I had to stretch my hand out and it was hard to keep the camera still. Plane is N180UA

Fascinating - I measured 9700 ft (2956 m) roll in 62 seconds (courtesy of Google Earth and my computer's clock). What I just now learned is that 32L has since been shortened, and 9R/27L has been renamed 08/26 and lengthened to 13kft (3962m) to accommodate these super-heavy, super-long-haul flights. (And a new runway parallel to 08/26 is being built.) Sorry if this has been discussed earlier in the comments. Thank you, rodgerjohnson, for sharing this excellent video.

United Airlines has the ATC communications available on channel 9 of the audio entertainment system. The pilots don't always turn it on since some people record it and put it on the internet. Some passengers get confused by the radio communications and throw fits about stuff they don't understand. There's not a whole lot of "upside" to putting it on from a pilots perspective.

Long takeoff roll -- very cool. Most flight using 32L depart from Tango 10, but i guess when you are going all the way to NRT you need the fuel. Great video.

32L is shorter than it use to be. Now only 9,685 feet. Runway 10/28 is the longest at ORD -- just over 13,000 feet. It was shortened in spring/summer 2010.

This is a real nice video! don't worry, I couldn't tell the departure was bumpy. It looked to me like the camera was still. I liked the conversation between the captain and ATC too. That plane sure was heavy indeed since it took the entire length of the runway to get off the ground. Nice view from the window all the way. superb job once again!

Love these videos with channel 9- and especially the heavy takeoff! Thanks! Those 747 wings sure are flexible out toward the end (makes for a smoother ride than an Airbus). For the record, the six people who gave this video a thumbs down are idiots!

All heavy aircraft departing O'Hare when O'hare is operating using the westerly runways use the full length of 32L. It's to assure that the wake turbulence after liftoff isn't lingering further down the runway at a higher altitude where the smaller jets taking off from T10 at 32L may encounter the wake. It cuts down on the holding time before departure behind the heavy for the smaller jets. It takes an extra minute or so for the heavies to get up to T10 & hold for smaller aircraft is 2 min.

only have 3000ft remaining. Due to your heavy weight- you were climbing out pretty shallowish [you can see the wings are just barely above the horizon] only around 1500fpm till the plane got "cleaned up" and above 10k. Thanks for the great video. More please! I love Boeings. "If it ain't a Boeing,I'm not a- going!

@nigahiga6400

Just remember if the wing were rigid it would put enormous stresses on the fuselage and wing itself. Up to 20 feet of wing flex is within the design limits posted (actual limits are much greater). Flexing allows it to act as a spring, making turbulence less pronounced for the passengers and crew.

Full length is an air traffic term meaning that there is another airplane at another intersection of the same runway waiting for take off. To avoid confusion and the wrong airplane taking the take off clearance, they use the term full length with the aircraft at the end of the runway.

@Zdogs22 Usually, long haul flights are loaded with freight which adds a lot of weight.Even without passengers, the fuel and freight alone would have weighed down the plane and caused it to eat a lot of concrete on the way up.

@rodgerjohnson I recently flew the Washington DC to Tokyo route earlier this month. I was not able to sleep on the flight so I listened to the pilots talk for almost twelve hours straight. It seemed like they were constantly talking. There were other airliners I was able to hear asking us (UA 803) if a particular course was recommended. I noticed that during that flight..we changed altitude multiple times to avoid "weather". When we got clearance to go higher, the engines roared louder.

All such devices have to be approved by the FCC, so AFIK, they wouldn't cause radio interference. The flight crew wants your attention during critical phases of flight, like take off, which is why they don't want you using them. What this guy did in no way jeopardized the flight he was on.
@rodgerjohnson
@rodgerjohnson 14 жыл бұрын
@laforet98 pilot to pilot interaction is very common. The climbing higher has more to do than weather. It can be because of weather but during long flights you do step climbs to gain fuel efficiency since your plane is more fuel efficient when your higher up. You might ask yourself why they dont start up high, well they are too heavy and during the flight the fuel burns off and the plane gets lighter. which makes it more economical to go higher.

@rodgerjohnson 14 жыл бұрын
@wjelliott598 yes but they have to be United flights not united express. Pilots also have the right to turn channel 9 on or off. Most of the time it is on but Ive been on couple of flights where there was no channel 9 which is a huge bummer.

In Frame 2:21, off the right wing, beyond the white tanks is where the AA DC-10 Flight went down in May 1979 after leaving 32R with one engine missing from its mount. The crash (I believe) remains the deadliest in US Aviation History. The Pilot that day, W. Lux, was a fill-in for the flight--it was not his scheduled flight.

DOLRED, I was just thinking the same and then went to comments. Yes, I remember that vividly as it was flight 191 and was heading for Los Angeles. I lived near O'Hare then and remember looking out our front Living room bay window and saw the black smoke and first thought it was a tank farm fire. It was Memorial Day weekend on a Friday afternoon about 3;30pm and still remember the ambulances and fire truck sirens from all surrounding communities. It's sad all perished and always thought of that went I would drive by that field.

You needed runway 32L full length which is 13000ft long- because you were most likely at or above 800,000lbs for the long flight to NRT . MTOGW for the 744 is 875k and would need around 11,000ft[depending on ISA and some other factors of course] of pavement to get airborne. Your speed was more than likely185kts when the mains lifted off[V2] On your flight- the takeoff roll took almost one minute and you rotated right after you passed by the crossing runway which is 9R/27L and now you would

@xGeminiXII I've travelled from Australia to the USA many times on United. United get you to where you're going in one piece & their staff are friendly. However, their 747 fleet are showing their age inside. They BADLY need to update their in-flight entertainment & tacky 80's decor. United have a few projectors to watch on board. No personal LCD screens with 'chose you own channel' or on-screen in-flight gaming (between other passengers etc) like Qantas, who's fleet is far more modern inside.

@Airplanefinder This is false. "Heavy" simply indicated wake turbulence category. A 757 can be classified as a heavy and it only has a single isle. It has nothing to with seat configuration. These "heavies" are susceptible to produce a large amount of wake turbulence. Everything from a C5 Galaxy to a B2 bomber and 757 can be a "heavy".

I got to go into the cockpit and I took a look at the FMC INIT REF page and there it was. I forgot excactly what the weight was but I can tell you that we had 328,800 lbs of fuel for the flight. Im gonna do this whenever I have the chance flying with UNitEd! Thanks.

It's not the takeoff that's heavy, it's the airplane. Air Traffic Control refers to aircraft as "heavy" (as in "Flight 107 Heavy") if they are capable of takeoff weights of 300,000 pounds or more.
