Our elementary school principal used to show us these movies, pretty much a year or two after the film was made. One of the reasons I fell in love with planes and KLAX.

The true pleasant, enjoyable days of aviation are gone forever. Now we just have to deal with the way it is, no meals, everybody is looked at as a criminal, etc.

Born in L.A. in 1954, we would go tothe airport just to watch the takeoffs and landings ! This film is exactly what we remember. With prop jobs included.

United Flight 766 is quite the chameleon-a United Boeing 720 @ 09:44-magically turns into a United Douglas DC-8 @ 09:52 before turning back into a United Boeing 720 again @ 10:04, rolling down the runway @ 10:18... but takes off as a Pan American Boeing 707-320 Intercontinental @ 10:28!

@@charlesduran8700 And UA 766 was never operated with a DC-8 either or scheduled to fly nonstop from LAX to IDL. During that time period, 700 flight numbers were 720s and 800 flight numbers were DC-8s. After the 727s arrived, United changed the flight numbers and 700 flights were DC-6s and DC-6Bs.

Airline travel was great in those days. Nowadays everyone is herded onto planes after being searched like criminals, crammed like sardines into tiny uncomfortable seats and subjected to screaming babies and wild kids. And if lucky a small bag of stale peanuts.

Very true and people are just plain nasty and selfish now too.

Not exactly Brian. Fly first class. It's cheaper than coach back then (corrected for inflation). You have great lounges and the industry has a far superior safety record. In reality we have the same service, with better safety but with a giant Greyhound bus of cheap seats at the back of the jet. Not trying to be classist, but that's what the consumers wanted and that's what they got. Spend the equivalent money for the same service but a safer experience (well, except for the TSA part). Cheers

Welcome a real family (Williams) dressed for flying at 7:00 minute mark. I still remember this when flying with my parents before the big sardine cans changed everything - the 747.

I had no idea United bought 707s, let alone the later 720’s. I’ve flown the 720 several times on Western Airlines. They were simply a shorter 707 made for shorter routes, the layout was the same. In the old days United flew only the DC-8: 727, and the 737. 767s replaced the DC-8s, the 727s were replaced by 757s.

Bobby Paluga, the 720 is actually a 707-020 (shortened fuselage length) as opposed to the original 707-120 (standard fuselage length). Boeing re-named it "720" at the request of United Air Lines. That said, you would not be wrong to call it a 707 because that's what it is. Therefore, United did indeed fly both DC-8's and short fuselage 707's (720's).

Anyone catch the error here ? United did not use B-720's from LAX nonstop to NY, just DC-8's. Before that, piston engined planes.
