Both 36" gauge DL-535E diesel locomotives were operating today. 111 pulled the gypsum train to the mine and back while 112 was switching in the yard.

This has to be the most amazingly CLEAN industrial railroad (& narrow gauge, to boot!) I've ever seen in my life! The locomotives look immaculate & very modern. (What manufacturer built them?). Even the gondoal cars are clean! Iron ically, the ONLY piecr of equipment that showed ANY signs of weathering was the water car! 😄 I'm guessing the fact that this is a desert environment in additon to rxcellent maintenace; and the fact that appatently in a very sparsely populated are means graffitti is non-existent! 🙂 Where in the southwest is this operation located? Very interesting video! 😉

I do have to ask though - how did your truck hold up in the sand? I rented a jeep wrangler specifically for this railroad and it did well for me. I initially had a small truck before upgrading to the wrangler thinking a truck wouldn’t get it done. The jeep did well for the most part - but it did get pretty bad for a quarter mile stretch or so about half a mile past the superstition trestle heading towards the quarry.

There’s no source of drinking water at the mine. It has to be brought in by rail.

How do they transport the finished product from Plaster City? Is there any rail line out that still functions?

Yes, Union Pacific operates the former SD&AE trackage between El Centro and Plaster City.

When you are at the crossing what does the bell indicate?

Doug Koontz It’s an alarm bell electrically linked to the crossing lights. Whenever the gate across the tracks is in the open position, the alarm bell is on to warn personnel of the impending railroad equipment movements around the crossing. Since this is considered an FRA insular railroad operation, they do not have to conform to the common crossing bell/gate setup you see on mainline railroad operations.
