Because we could not make the next step with fred and mctominay in midfield. He played them almost every time when they where fit, in his 3 years. We always talked about it that they are not good enough for us in midfield. They are for sure good characters but they can not control a midfield, like we all saw. That midfield organization was his biggest mistake imo. Of course its not the only issue, but its very essential. If you look at all great teams, they have all a wordclass midfield. Its the most important area in the game, and we didn't have the right mix in players there who can control a midfield. Fred and mctominay are very similar players who are more allrounders and fighters, they are better for just sit back and counter, and even that did not work every time. You need a world class defensiv midfielder who is smart and protect the defensive line and can also play out from the back, and the other two should be some sort of dictators of the game. That he didn't see that and was not willing to change that, baffles me till today.
