Here's a basic Liquid simulation with Unity Shader Graph, an effect that fakes a fluid in a recipient. It uses world position, backface painting and a script to simulate a basic motion.

Thanks for the excellent tutorial! I have a question. I am trying to make the liquid transparent. I made the Surface type to Transparent but it doesn't change anything. On the shader graph, I see the Fragment alpha value sources from Remap > Step. Is there something that can be configured there to make the liquid transparent?

I ended up multiplying the output of the remap function by another float the user can control, that lets you adjust it so every liquid fill will be between 0 and 1, otherwise it seems to be linked to scale. If you're gonna be controlling the fill dynamically this might be easier, then you can just edit that multiplier on your prefab object. Another thing I did was edit the wobble function, so the Y rotation affects it too, for some reason it wasn't like that by default. That way if your character holds a potion and turns in place, it will wobble. Also, this doesn't seem to work with HDRP, which just seems to be a mess anyways

I was looking for a simple explanation of the wobble script but couldn't find one. After studying it a while, I think I can give it an attempt. Pulse is the same as angular frequency, or number of rotations a second. Sin waves are created with this value, so instead of a full rotation the values rock back and forth between half rotations. These are then multiplied by a Lerp value being reduced to zero by a Recovery Rate, making the rocking motion smaller and smaller. After the wobble variables are applied to the shader, the velocity values are calculated using the previous frame's transform data, then stored to be used in the next frame. This causes the rocking motion to be more intense depending on how extreme the current movement was.

It's scary but funny and very exciting that you still can and should use hlsl on top of the shader graph. But you're video feel almost unfairly obligatory for anyone who wants to learn shading in Unity. So many effects and methods with wonderful stylized designs. This is professional work made to be available to absolute beginners.

Nice tutorial! I believe it's better to normalize the vector before using the Split node. That way your Fill can be size independent. You still use the Remap node, but with values of -1 and 1 for the Out Min Max.

as someone who makes unity games for a hobby I guess (since the job market is horrible), this tutorial was excellent. I've been using unity for a while, and I didn't even know the shadergraph existed, because I never really dabbled too far into the art side of things. It looks like a very powerful tool and I can't wait to dive into it deeper. Also, using a double sided mesh and telling the 'inside' texture to look like the top of the liquid is really clever. Thanks for the video, I'll be implementing this into my project

Be careful, shader graphs is a useful tool however writing shaders by hand is way more optimized, what is often made is that you make your shader with a shader graph, and once it's done you convert it to code

@@moonasha I didn't try for the moment but what I read on it is that on the shader graph asset there is a button "generate shader code", but writing in HLSL is what my teachers would advice me

That was amazing. I wonder if there's some modification you can do so when you jog the liquid up and down like the red potion did during the credits, if you could modify the fill to not go from 0->0.7, but based on gravity move it to 0.3->1 as if the liquid is being smushed to the top.

Loved the tutorial! I just wanted to add that it tends to be better if you avoid branching in shaders just because of how they function underneath. Instead the bool can be used as a zero or one value that is then plugged into lerp to lerp between the two colors.

That is exactly how the branch node already works, though. Look up the documentation, it's just a lerp.

for some reason I have to set my remap values to really low numbers, like -.07 and .06. And it seems it depends on the size of the object, what those numbers have to be set to. Am I doing something wrong or is that just the way it is?

If you have a problem with the shader graph note that you have to install the package and also use the Universal Pipeline Render package. This need to be setup first in order to work so also consider other videos to initial setup.

Hi Gabriel, I'm trying to use your technique to make a liquid tube but in my case, it will be static in the world and the camera will move around. my problem is that once the container is too empty, you can see the bottom of it and we should really see liquid still. Do you have any idea/tip on how to sort this out? Thanks in advance.

I think I may be missing something or this is far to advance for me but I followed every step up to when the material was applied to the fill material but all I got was the pink "material missing" color. is there a something that is needed to make it render? even the main preview shows nothing besides the pink color even with a different base color.

Using HDRP and it seems to me like the liquid fill amount is dependent on position relative to the camera. The fill amount changes depending on how i position the camera relative to the objects pivot. Don't think im missing anything on the shader graph

Nice video, I did the exactly samething with my position mass. However the top surface is still missing despite that I scale the liquid body down a little bit. I also tried to create the liquid body in blender, however the surface is still missing. If there an solution to that?

I'm having one problem with this in a fresh URP project in Unity 2020.3.20f1. The "fill" seems to start outside of the mesh, so it would not be visible until you rotate the object with the shader upside down, then what was previously 100% empty is then completely full. I've tried adjusted the min and max thresholds in the remap, but that doesn't help. I'm unable to rotate anything with the shader as empty bottles will be filled randomly, half full ones filled to the brim by tilting just a bit, etc. Any ideas? Should note: It works as expected if I use a default Unity capsule object, but anything else (including a simple capsule made in blender) has this issue with the fill line and the Y axis being offset.

I couldn't find the solution, but if you export an fbx from blender with the pivot point in the center of the geometry, and in unity you use an Y scale of 3 (aprox), it works. There must be some error with the scale when blender exports the file. Could you solve it?

@@gonzatoto Yep, the pivot point vs the centre of the geometry was the issue. After I recentered it, exported into unity, it all worked. Most of the models I had, the pivot was at the bottom which caused the issue.

@@WolfwithSword you're a life saver, I was about to rip my hair out because it wasn't working... turns out maya was exporting every .obj with the pivot at the bottom for some stupid reason. I never would have thought to use FBX

For me the principal graph node/inspector didnt have "Two sided" instead was "Render Face" select Both in the drop down menu. Because in the part with the "TopColor" and "Side Color" topColor wont work

I'd love to see an advanced unity vfx course from you covering realistic vfx like those seen in Black Desert for example (video reference: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZrChdseY2rDVmWw.html) I get that it might be a little advanced for an online course but literally NO ONE teaches stuff like that and I feel like it would be really useful :D Also the new shader graph might make that a bit easier than before!

Hello! I'm trying to make hot chocolate for my VRChat avatar, and I want the liquid inside of the cup to be wobble-y! Creating the "Blank Shader Graph" isn't visible for me in my Unity 2019 Project..

I was using this to fill a pipe and the fill part was not accurate for the cylinder, so I added a new Vector2 - FillCaps and made Fill the time to lerp between the two values and the output would be placed in the Remap.

Hey sorry, I know this is old but do you know what values I should put into the lerp? I tried messing around with it a bit and still getting the awkwardly shaped fill rate inside my vials (cylinders)

@@King_H if I remember correctly, I made one value a minimum fill and another a max. The fill would fill in between the two. To find the values, you just have to experiment.

You can do it with any object. I think I mentioned that you can follow along even with a capsule.

I wonder if there is a way to make this so that the liquid in the bottles is transparent. I feel like there must be a way but I just can't figure it out

You can set the shader to transparent instead of opaque or maybe you can limit the output of the split node that goes to the alpha to something like 0.7 instead of 1.

great tutorial, I've got everything working except the wobble effect, both floats change the rotation of the liquid manually but nothing happens when I move the bottles in game view

Hello Gabriel. I followed the tutorial step by step, however the topface of my liquid is missing and I don't find any solutions online. Do you have any ideas of to solve it?

Not sure but, make sure you have two sides turned on in the shader. Make sure the liquid mesh is a bit smaller than the container mesh.

Change the shader material from lit to unlit.

​@@fatedfreak Doing that makes it looks like the shader is filling the inside container since it becomes brighter, but it doesn't answer what I think the poster was saying. What I think the poster was saying (and what I was expecting) was that the shader was a "solid" thing and has a top so that, for example, if you moved the camera inside of the water and looked up you'd see the inside of the top face (or just all blue since you'd be "inside" the shader). However, if you do this as the videos shows you, you just look straight out of the water as if you were inside a bowl. But when looking more closely at the video, it seems that is how it works. So I'd love to know how to fill up the shader so that it actually looks like water rather than coloring the inside wall of the sphere/capsule/bottle .

This looks super neat and is exactly what I need but apparently I'm missing something here because when I click the plus under active targets there is no universal... in fact there is no anything. :S Does anyone know what I've forgotten to do? I'm on 2020.3.18 and I installed the shader graph under packages, is it really only accessible in 2020.3.11? Or is there something else I've messed up?

To simplify I recommend you do this, open Unity Hub and create a new project with the URP template. Then you can follow the tutorial. The problem you are having seems to be related to a bad URP setup, maybe. Hope this helps.

@@GabrielAguiarProd I'm so sorry for having to be "that guy" but yes that definitely was the problem, more specifically the problem being I didn't use URP to begin with and just jumped into 3D out of habit. Thank you. I just wanted to showcase my bottles with your plugin installed. I'm more of a modeler than anything else.

It looks like you have the wobble axises mixed up, the rotation doesnt look natural. would be easily fixable by switching the variables in the shader

I've a peoblem with this shader. The shader works depends on the size and volume of the mesh of the an object. For smaller objects it doesn't work smoothly instead I've to use very small decimal point to fill/unfill the render part.
