Universal Audio created Volt 276 for collaborators, from musicians and producers to livestreamers and content creators who want to easily record audio with big studio sound. Plug right in to your Mac, PC, iPad, or iPhone and Volt just shows up, ready to capture your inspiration with professional polish, courtesy of Universal Audio.
It is a 2 mic pre-amp that are emulations of the 610; it also has emulations of the 1176's! this is their entry into the affordable interface market.
This is great because many professionals love to use the UA interface products, so this allows beginners and professionals who don't have a lot to spend to use their quality products.
From the team that brought you the game-changing Apollo interface, Volt 276 delivers superior studio sound quality, with more character and tone than any USB interface in its class.
Few sounds can compare to a vintage Universal Audio 610 tube preamp, as used to record everyone from Ray Charles to Van Halen. Volt 276 gives you the rich, full sound of this classic UA mic/line/instrument preamp, thanks to its built-in tube emulation circuitry, a UA exclusive.
Get album-ready punch and presence with Volt 276's onboard 76 Compressor - an innovative analog circuit inspired by UA's classic 1176 Limiting Amplifier. The 76 Compressor features three perfectly tailored presets to tame voice, guitars, synths, and drum machines. Just plug in, pick a setting, and play.
Some audio interfaces give you a smattering of random audio apps. Not Volt. Instead, they put together a bundle of serious music production tools, virtual instruments, and plug‑ins from the industry's best.

FYI - Your featured artist Katie Ferrara is a Los Angeles musical treasure. Her voice is compelling and pitch appropriately perfect, mic's loves her, she sings great harmony, her acoustic guitar playing is exceptional (and she also plays piano), her songwriting is inspired and commercial (and in addition to her writing, she can do covers all day long and does them well), she is as charismatic and attractive as heck, and she is an incredibly nice, well-balanced individual. So glad you featured her on this product review (I figured she deserved a little more introduction). PS - I love your videos Warren, very cool stuff. -colin

@@Producelikeapro This is strictly using UAD's rep and the 1176s name as bells and whistles for a highly mediocore interface.. No plugins, No Pres, No Converters wich everyone would obviously want from such a legendary company. You know people are talking about trading in apollos for this cash grab? I wouldn't want to do that to my fans or customers. For how much they are selling this for, Black Lion Audio makes a truely class leading interface that sounds incredible. They didnt have to cash grab or put out demos to the biggest names in the industry to get people to go "oh shit" They just made a quality product at a reasonable price.

First and foremost: Katie is a marvelous singer and musician! What I consider great with the UA Volt interfaces is, that they encourage you to commit during recording. In many cases, the initial and most intuitive decision is one of the best decisions, in contrast to repetitive tweaking, which often may not provide better or more intriguing results. My primary interface is a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 (2nd gen), I also use a Behringer UMC204HD (whose preamps aren't bad either) and sometimes I use an older Yamaha mixer (MG12/4FX) in front of the interface.

This is exactly the type of video I needed for this product. Thanks so much for doing what you do Warren! I absolutely love the minimalist approach to this recording. So practical and tasteful. Exactly what the song called for IMO.. You're right they will sell a lot of these. Think about the "working" musicians out there who are a bit tech savvy, highly creative, but don't have a lot of money to invest in quality gear. Most people with an ear can really hear it when a sound is right. When the bass drum hit for the first time in this song, I was blown away by the sheer body and depth it had. It was impressive. After seeing the setup, I was pretty sold on the mic pre/comp sound quality from this device. It seems like a solid option for the Musician's out there interested in recording themselves on a budget. I just wish more people did this type of review.. Bravo!

I have an old Avid Mbox, a small collection of chinese knock-off mikes and am using Garageband while I try to teach myself Reaper. This really gives a feel for what is possible on a reasonable budget (except talent will always be lacking!). This also hits home the old adage where art decorates/transcends space while music decorates/transcends time, hearing this cover was like bumping into an old friend....you end up on the verge of tears for no reason!! Beautiful Job!

So simple, such great design makes it a pleasure to work with. I think sound quality wise the two are probably indistinguishable, but having the compressors at your fingertips is great feature. That convo at around 10:44, about the older days-of a committed workflow with compression-to-tape, it reminds me of a humble argument I once had with an audio teacher, contesting the usefulness of destructive editing in a DAW, to the non-destructive regiment of modernizing updates and the like. I felt there's a similar principle in the mindset of commitment to the sound early-on that relied less on experimentation post-record, and more on the singular practices of "getting there" with less to fuss-with, less to troubleshoot when things get too diminished. Like how the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. I'm grateful to see top-tier companies advocating simplicity in their gear designs. I don't see pitfalls of mediocrity in committing-to better sound early on. I see a shorter, straight line to the goal and the suggestive framework for a simpler studio mentality to get things done... Although there IS the legendary horror story of the TV/VCR combo; if either one goes, you lose both to get it fixed. Is that IN-THE-BOX braintalk or "thinking outside the box?" :D OMG what-if THERE IS NO BOX??

We live in spoiled times. I'm amazed at the CD quality performances of non chart talent all over youtube. Pristine recordings with $300 interfaces. I recently got a motu m4 I'm very happy with since I don't input record that often. This thing is going to sell like hotcakes and make the playing field even more level for gear that gives you a polished professional studio sound for very little money. The recording you did here, CD release quality to normal folks easy.

Nice device and what a great song. Awesome performance. I actually just received my Audient Sono 1 month ago. Since I'm a guitarist (from origin...) it makes more sense to me. It's a great practice device as well with all the emulations, and of course the tube pre-amp makes it really nice together with my pedals.

Blair is a great guy. He did drums for my band, The Leeds, several years ago in his backyard studio in Burbank. Probably the most professional drummer I’ve ever dealt with. And I was amazed how fast he tracked everything. I believe we had him do about 8 or 9 songs for our record…. It was the only time I had the pleasure to meet and work with him, and I still remember how simple he was to work with and how talented he is.

@@Producelikeapro What's funny is we had to sneak to Burbank from Vegas to have him do the tracks without pur drummer knowing. We literally used all of Blairs work on the record and not 1 note was from our actual drummer lol. That's how much we liked Blairs work. Our drummer was less happy than the rest of us. 😱 And to this day, whenever I listen to that record, which is maybe once every couple years, I'm still in love with what Blair did and his tones. And the fact he tried and used multiple snares.

I like the concept of the UA Volt. I just wish they made a bigger rack mounted version as well. Like an 8 mic pre version with more outputs. Kinda like the Scarlett series ranging from solo-18i20. It's obvious that UA is trying to compete with the more affordable lines of interfaces with the Volt series like the Scarletts, Moto M series, Audient D series , etc, but if they extended the range to more i/o then they would really have the upper hand. The Apollo series is obviously their big interfaces, but its not in the affordable price range. i could see an affordable larger interface by UA to sell like hot cakes. I know i would buy one.

I love my audient id4 very much, and I treat it like analogue in the digital world. I record straight to my daw through an input aux track that has a gate, an arturia 1973 and a softube Cl1B. Everyone thinks I track analogue, or in fancy rooms, and it's literally all digital. I don't even know why anyone would pay UAD's apollo systems anymore, with todays ssd's being so fast, anyone with a half decent laptop/desktop can do it the way I do.

The news of these Volts dropped on the morning when my new (and first ever) audio interface arrived; D'oh! They do seem cool, and look really great, so if they had arrived earlier I may have considered getting one. But they're a bit beyond my price range right now, especially for my first interface and until I know how much use I'll get out of it. So I went for a cheap, or 'value', interface by a large German/Chinese company that shall remain nameless (soz!). But when/if I upgrade, and if the long term reviews are good, then I do see me getting the 4x4 version of the Volt as my first 'serious' interface. And I'd just like to say thanks for this review, it's really good to hear equipment like this through your professional ears, Warren, because I know my ears are soooo untrained, so your opinion is really valuable to a cloth-eared muppet like me.

Thanks for that great review and awesome recording performance with this beautiful song and artist ! 🤩 Firstly I got an ID4 bundled into an AT2035 studio offer, then recently I acquired an IRIG PRO DUO IO to get a cleaner sound preamp while recording directly into a camera (mostly for vlogging purposes alone into the field). Now I’m looking to upgrade towards an ARTURIA AUDIOFUSE Rev2 which is twice the price of the Volt 276, but coming with an ADAT (in/out) and a little bit more portability as a mobile device to carry on within luggage. Ultimately the Volt 276 should become a great contender at this price point and sound quality I agree. Grettings from France, Marc

I swear by Arturia's Audiofuse products. I don't know how they've done it, but their built in preamps are simply incredible. I've got a good collection of outboard preamps such as Neve and API, however I'm using them less and less since getting the Audiofuse Studio & the Audiofuse 8pre. I love preamps and what they can do to for a signal chain. I don't consider Arturia's preamps a downgrade from my ridiculously expensive ones.
