The UK is heading towards the "biggest overnight social security cut" since the modern welfare state was founded, according to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. (bit.ly/C4_News...)
They've been investigating the impact of the decision to cut Universal Credit payments by £20 a week from October, and they say it could plunge half a million more people into poverty, as well as putting millions of low income families under further financial strain.

There are many low income workers who are forced to rely on Universal Credit to top up their earnings. The best way the government could help would be to increase the Personal Tax Allowance. Increase it from the current £12,570 per year to £18,000 per year. This would benefit everyone, but those on the lowest incomes would benefit the most. Low income earners wouldn't need to claim Universal Credit top ups, those who are unemployed would be greatly incentivised to find work.

I have just been reading about a chap in Bristol who, as DLA was being phased out, was told to apply for PIP. Before any decision was made his DLA was stopped and for 12 months he received no payments re his disability,PIP then given to him only after the intervention of a help agency, plus an apology from the DWP. People on UC think that they are badly treated! By the way, I am a highly intelligent man who knows how to talk to folk, and I can honestly say that I have never experienced any difficulties when talking to DWP or Council staff about state benefits or HB and CTR; perhaps this is because I am pleasant and don't blow my top with demands.

I was told, officially in 2016, that I because of my health problems, I cannot work. I am in the Limited Capability For Work and Work Related Activity group of Universal Credit Now I did not make that decision. It was made by an INDEPENDENT decision maker, after I attended a Work Capability Assessment (WCA). So I am a GENUINE case. Basically, come October, I will be £80 a month worse off. Now I am one of the fortunate ones. Though it will not be easy, I CAN make cutbacks. But what about the people who simply CANNOT? Who cares about them? 'Get a Job' I hear. Have you TRIED to get a job these days? One that will pay a half decent salary, so that you do not STILL have to claim benefits?

It has cost a fortune during the pandemic, yet we were left out as usual. My fear is that even if the brave people take up the cases of the likes of us on ESA I will not get the money even if they win. The reason being I am paid £8 too much for Universal Credit and I am on earned ESA rather than means tested. The fact that I would be better off on Means Tested benefits as I would be more free is irrelevant to ministers.

You will get the money you are entitled too. The DWP will appeal and lose again. When they changed incapacity benefit to ESA I lost £25 from my benefit and I got the money back dated from 2010. @@C-Rex1 To begin, your use of ignorant is incorrect; consult a dictionary and you'll find that it is applicable to you. With regard to the unemployed parent(s) who may have starving children: a safety net should be in place whereby benefit, eg UC, would have a child increment in the event of job loss. Thus if you were employed you supported your children from your wages/ salary, if not the DWP helped out. I have seen young couples with three children of pre school age and neither parent working, or having ever worked; why should they be given money for having brats because they are sexually incontinent, cannot figure out how to take a pill or insert the male organ of generation into a prophylactic?

There's so little recognition for 'invisible' disabilities :( This means i have been in 'lockdown' since feb 2014. i cannot afford taxi, hobbies etc that make life bearable on my good days when i COULD do stuff, now that my condition has stabilized and heading towards reintegration/convalescence. I have lost ALL my old friends and cannot afford a companion pet also, so the 7 years of isolation, only being able to have real life interaction with my mum n step-dad has had a deleterious effect on my mental health and a tendency to give up my efforts towards remission. @Chris Longden When did the government take "all natural resources"? Most of it just requires privately held companies to abide by certain regulations. Also, the government has no obligation to clothe, house, or feed you. The reason why some people have a higher standard of living is because they either worked hard (promoted at a job), were well educated (and worked hard), took huge financial risks (investments into stocks or a new business), or inherited wealth (their ancestors likely worked hard). Money doesn't grow on trees; it has to be earnt. Every able-bodied child has the potential to live comfortably if they are willing to work hard. Treating yourself as the victim and living off government subsidies in ensures that you are perpertually impoverished (and a total loser, and waste of oxygen, might I add).

Lol, Folk who think the Jobless are Leeching??? Fact is Self Employed Swindle more Tax than all the Unemployed put together!!! What you gotta understand is Benefits aren't Spent on Luxuries, they are spent on things the Government force us to use and so the Taxman gets a Big chunk of that Back so in Reality those on Benefits get Very Very Little!!!!

@@brittishman7870 Most of these Leeches Waste their Government handout money on Tattoos, Cigarettes, and Beer. Social Welfare and Free NHS Healthcare is a Socialist/Communist ideology. Ironic how Brits love Government benefits so much when they're brainwashed by McCarthyism Red Scare.
