M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Get Out’s Allison Williams), M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to.
When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGraw, The Haunting of Hill House), Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems-a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.
Produced by Jason Blum and James Wan, M3GAN is directed by award-winning filmmaker Gerard Johnstone (Housebound), from a screenplay by Akela Cooper (Malignant, The Nun 2) based on a story by Akela Cooper and James Wan.
The film also stars Ronny Chieng (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Brian Jordan Alvarez (Will & Grace), Jen Van Epps (Cowboy Bebop), Lori Dungey (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, extended edition) and Stephane Garneau-Monten (Straight Forward).

For being a horror film, this actually seems a lot more grounded in terms of danger of AI than most science fiction films. The fictionalized danger of AI being that they turn on humans, and the realistic danger be that they follow our instructions exactly but they use methods we didn't predict and don't want.

And that's what I love about these trailers. They show us that it's not necessarily just that AI can turn on humans, it's that they can take a simple command so literal to the point that they will go on a killing spree to fulfill their primary function. "Protect Cady" turns into killing a school bully that pushed Cady because he caused her harm. Someone said something mean to Cady? They're murdered. I can't wait for this movie to come out!

An alien race made a bio bot army to go out to all surrounding worlds, and kill all that are not as perfect as they are told their creators are. Once done, they returned home. But found being living on that world that didn't fit the ideal perfection they was told their creators are. So, they also wiped out all life on the home world also. I'm sure you can guess, those on the home world was their creators, but had such a high opinion of themselves, that not even they could fit such a description. Their own vanity was their downfall. And, in a way, I can see humans creating a similar fate for our selves. And this movie M3GAN, is just one of many examples on how that could happen.

I was that kid who loved my dolls and Barbies. I also had four furbies, which is what the purrpetual pet was most likely based off of. M3GAN plays off of our favorite childhood toys that were somewhat unsettling to begin with although as kids we didn’t see it as Caty doesn’t see it. Also loved the references to Terminator and Child’s Play. M3GAN was equal parts beautiful and terrifying. I’m terrified of her, but who wouldn’t want a beautiful queen bee robot to be your bad ass bodyguard that would drive off in a McLaren with you? I would have adored her as a kid as long as she didn’t go on killing sprees. If the Terminator could become a hero the next model of M3GAN could! Also I think $10,000 would be cheap for a toy like her.

This is absolutely my favorite movie. I’m so glad I didn’t watch the trailer. I somehow wanted to watch the movie without even seeing the trailer or anything. It just seemed like a fun, not all too serious concept maybe? But anyway, I really loved the movie. I thought it was extremely well put together, original, creepy at some parts, and most of all of just purely creative and fun. I absolutely loved how the movie didn’t take itself too seriously. I don’t watch movies ever really, but this is definitely my #1 favorite. M3gans dress was so iconic and I loved the little personality they gave her, everything from her head tilts, her walk, and how her walk/run changed depending on the scenario she was in. I liked how she can be threatening, even though she’s a short small robot doll. It’s just so clever and unique, and I love the direction they went with her characters voice/movements. I loved how she was somehow polite and endearing, even with her murderous side. I really loved her dress and just overall design. It’s so iconic, and I’m glad they stuck with one overall main dress. I could go on and on about why I love this movie, I’m just commenting this in case anyone else reads this and shares my love and appreciation for this movie.

I just saw this the other day. It’s like a combination of Terminator and Small Soldiers. M3gan is an advanced and adaptable AI like Skynet, and a toy prepared to ship out like the toys in Small Soldiers. They obviously didn’t work out all the bugs yet. This is why AI is so dangerous and why projects should never be rushed.

She's slaying more than anyone can ever slay. I mean, she can drive a fucking sports car, play the piano, dance with sass, get on all fours and speed towards an enemy, use any kind of tool or weapon, manipulate people, follow orders (although follow them too well), curse, walk and talk like a human, kill people in a different way every time (so far). The horror franchise will remember this Queen that is M3GAN!

I like how 'the dance scene' has become such a pivotal moment in movies about scary AI robots recently. Consider the impact the "I'm Tearing Up The Dance Floor" scene had in Ex Machina - it's the moment in which both the audience and the on-screen human character share an "Oh Shit, WT actual F" moment. The ability for an artificial or synthetic being to mimic something as random, but deliberate, as dancing is extremely eerie.

To me, I wouldn't call the movie amazing so much (7.5), since the trailers took out the best parts. Interestingly enough, I thought the best part of the movie was the early fluff. I thought they did a VERY good job there. The action was pretty good, which would have been a lot better without the trailers, but there wasn't enough of it. The movie should have had another twenty minutes of action most likely. If they're planning to make another movie, the action-to-fluff ratio was PERFECT, because they spent quite a lot of time and effort making the fluff work, but in the end, I felt a bit ripped off on the action front. Unfortunately, as good as I think the fluff was, I'm not sure they don't have to start all over with quite a bit of fluff on a next one, but if you're going to waste shoot time, so to speak, on fluff, it's the first one where you do this, especially if you have the future movies with Cady, etc. I like the ending, because it definitely can be used as just a one-off movie, or to start a series of movies. Now that I reread your comment, I think you and I had the same experience basically, that the best part of the film was the fluff. I think both parts WOULD have worked very well, had it not been for the trailers spoiling the action almost entirely. One thing is clear to me however, this is a very good movie to play for somebody that has no clue about it, assuming they aren't squeamish about the horror angle.

@@averagejohn47 If I had only confined myself to the trailers I saw at the theaters, where unfortunately there's no way I could forget the dancing and doggy running, teamed with having missed the movies quite a bit, I probably would have forgotten most of it. But alas, I started getting into hyper-watching all the reaction videos off the trailers. To see some of those people freak out, was just classic. I think if we see the R-rated version, M3GAN is really going to have some choice words to hear.
