From what I gather, the judges disliked the routine due to their costumes and made an extremely odd decision to state that it was more Jazz-like. I call BS and strongly believe that this is one of the fiercest pom routines ever created. Simply mute this performance and overlay any typical “pom” beats or uptempo songs over top this routine and it looks like a BEAST of a pom dance! Jazz and technical movements have always been in pom routines. It was a low blow and believe this was more political to etch them out of Finals. Minnesota has dominated the college dance arena for years. Further, if the judges wanted to disqualify based on uniform and style of dance, then half the hip hop routines need to be disqualified as well. Why? Because 90% of them look like pom routines or gymnastics. lol

yeah but compared to the routines they have previously competed, this years pom lacked the intensity of pom motions and instead had more 'tricks' which with pom most judges would prefer more motions. it was still an amazing routine, but no where near as impressive as what they could have done with a mix, a different costume and more motions.

Yeah I’m currently doing this type of dancing too and it’s not necessarily jazz it’s in the Pom dance category, but in these type of competitions it is placed in the jazz category. There is a basic pom dance category which is when they dance with poms and then there is a jazz category where you can dance with and without poms.

This is olympic levels. How did this routine not get into finals and actually win? I'm thinking out loud here. What were the reasons/faults/whatever... here? Is it because of their uniform? The fact that these are beautiful, healthy women and not malnourished, malnutritioned girls? What else was it because their routine was not of high jumps and flips and everything typical of a routine everyone expects and is used to seeing? please trust me on this the tone of my post is not to mock or insult or cause undue injury actively or passively or subtly. I'm being genuine here and totally clueless because I see technical mastery here. I see contextual intelligence in their interpretation. I see creativity and a personal individuality that sooo in sync with the rest of the team. I did not see an "I" here. I saw a "we". I'm sure you will agree with me on the above being extremely obvious. So I fail to understand what went wrong that the judges did not reward them with their entry to the finals.
@serenatang5739

First of all I don’t even know how you managed to link body shaming into your comment. If you had any respect for the judges or dance comp at all you would know that judges would NEVER deduct point based off “body type”, that’s complete blasphemy. Second of all, please watch some other pom routines to understand what Pom actually is. University of Minnesota dances wonderfully with amazing technical execution but this is literally a jazz routine with poms in their hands. They lost in having the wrong type of choreography.
@ua6523
@ua6523 4 жыл бұрын
@@serenatang5739 it's interesting to know that out of every heartfelt compliment and high praise written out there in my post the only thing that caught your eye was about body type and that you wrongly assumed that I was shaming their body type. Thank you for that. I appreciate your observation for singling just that one non existent intent. Oh just to further elaborate since you will I'm sure again assume how I mean is this. There is a stereotype of a type when it come to cheerleading, dance routines and competitive forms that unfortunately favour skinny bodies. This was the first time in a long time that I saw a refreshingly breathtaking ser of dancers who defied that norm and smashed their routine out of the ball park. Every reason here to mentally fist pump. I am celebrating them. Again let it be known here that it has been a long time since watching a competitive dance routine routine that comprised of women who had cellulite and fat and every other thing that makes for a healthy normal woman and not some skinny woman this close to dying out of malnutrition. Just to confirm here. I'm saying I love what I saw. The last 2 lines you wrote at the end of your comment was all you had to write to clarify my doubt. Perhaps it would help you understand context here. Did you never think that perhaps I'm not from your geographical,physical and/mental disposition? That maybe... just maybe what you assumed about me was wrong and that perhaps I did deserve the benefit of your doubt? That maybe had you put matters into context I didn't deserve your displeasure? Food for thought here. Of course I'm glad to see that your sense of diplomacy does come with sass. But it would do a world of good if you didnt assume wrongly and out of all the high praise given you pick out the one thing that didnt even exist. To make matters simple. I haven't and do not agree to anyone body shaming. I should know as i myself have lost over 13 kilos of weight. I was obese myself once. If anything I rejoice in a healthy body. That is beauty to me. So read my comment again. See if I was being blasphemous as you so unjustly assumed. I don't do this replying shit for just this reason. I do not regret that I said what was needed to be said instead of what you wanted said. Not that it mattered to you. The assault you did on my character matters to me. So I'm sorry I can't take a joke.
@serenatang5739
@serenatang5739 4 жыл бұрын
Usha Aron I pointed out your comment about bodies because it was out of place and everything else you questioned could be a legitimate question. When I said “link to body shaming” previously I meant that I couldn’t fathom how you considered their bodies to be a possible factor in the deduction of points. Perhaps you unconsciously assume that the dance world favors “malnourished, skinny” dancers when that is in fact not true. Dance takes great strength and stamina, especially college dance teams, so dancers would not be able to survive if they were “malnourished”. As a result, unhealthy dancers are the minority. In addition, please don’t assume skinny means unhealthy. Every body has different levels of metabolism and genetics play a role. University of Minnesota has beautiful, healthy girls and so do most other dance teams regardless of whether they have honey thighs or are stick thin. I fully support your celebration of body diversity; just don’t disrespect professionals by wondering if they deduct precious points based on something as trivial as body type in a college level dance team.

@@ua6523 Are you familiar with dance teams especially at the collegiate level? You asked several great questions trying to understand the lack of placement into finals. While I am not a judge and can't speak 100% these are my thoughts: 1. "Was it because of their uniform? " ~ This is not likely. They are wearing a common costume style. 2."The fact that these are beautiful, healthy women and not malnourished, malnutritioned girls?" ~As Serna Tang explained, this is not the ballet world. Their body types are the norm not the exception. Furthermore the judging scoring system does not factor in body composition. 3. "What else was it because their routine was not of high jumps and flips and everything typical of a routine everyone expects and is used to seeing?" ~ Dance Teams in general don't have a lot of flips other than aerials and an occasional trick in a hip hop routine. They also tend to only have the leaps and jumps that the team did here. 4. "please trust me on this the tone of my post is not to mock or insult or cause undue injury actively or passively or subtly. So I fail to understand what went wrong that the judges did not reward them with their entry to the finals." ~ All of this is true! The routine is BEAUTIFUL and technically executed at a level that few can compare to. The artistry and performance is spectacular! Unfortunately it isn't the correct style for the category. It is an AMAZING dance but it is jazz style not pom style. I can't know 100% because I wasn't a judge and I haven't seen their score sheets but I suspect they lost points in the execution category because it is the wrong style. All the teams are talented so at competition like this even losing tenths or hundreds of a point could have made the difference between getting into finals or not. I sincerely hope that helps!
