Glad you had fun in LA. I lived very close to Atomic - "Chatty, friendly, helpful" is not how I'd describe the owners. I once asked if they had any John Fahey records, the guy simply said "yes". I followed up with "Great, what section could I find them in?" Responded glibly "in the John Fahey section...". Freakbeat, on the other hand, I love. I always walk out of there with something I'd never thought I'd find in the wild.

I have a NM 12" OG Joe Jackson Look Sharp, and the sonics are awesome on it too. In fact, all the Joe Jackson vinyl I have are extremely well mastered.

Based on your solid endorsement of the Joe Jackson Look Sharp! 2x 10" LPs, I tracked one down off Discogs. As with every other specific pressing I have hunted down after your thorough reviews, I was stunned and amazed how good in this case how good a 1979 A&M pressing can sound 45 years later. I love your passion for the hobby and the outlet making videos allows to share your knowledge and experience with fellow enthusiasts. If you are talking about a title I have a remote interest in acquiring, in my book the research has been done and all I have to do is simply pull the trigger on purchase.

You didn’t go to Amoeba? … the Disneyland of Record Shops? … I love that store!

We decided to focus on the smaller shops in the Valley - definitely spoiled for choice! I've been to Amoeba before so we decided to scratch that one off the list...plus....traffic

Nice video! That Nothing’s Shocking has “Pigs in Zen” on the back cover, but not on the actual record, right? The Rhino pressing I have is horrible, “Summertime Rolls” has a sound that comes in and out. I heard that others have the same issue. They need to do a 2LP like they did with “Ritual”. Jane’s Addiction (before they first broke up) was a complete force! Seeing them live was a religious experience! I saw Porno for Pyros a couple months back at the Fillmore in Detroit. Mike Watt came back again for the original bass player that “Quit the Music Business for Nature”. Mike came out with a cane and sat down the whole show, but kicked ass on the bass and was energetic! Great vibe and great show!
@Universityofvinyl2 ай бұрын
Hey...I double checked and Pigs in Zen is not on the record or the back cover. I checked and that song wasn't on any of the '88 Vinyl releases. Did Mike Watt have hip surgery or something? I hope he'd doing OK - national treasure. Saw him with Iggy and the Stooges at Riot Fest Denver '13.
@mlblue53552 ай бұрын
@@Universityofvinyl ok, my bad. I thought I saw it on the back of the cover. It must be my anger getting the best of me. That song was on the CD. I listened to the CD religiously. I know it was on the XXX album (live version) but I think it’s very important for “Nothing’s Shocking”. Maybe he did have some surgery, I don’t know. Yes, he is a national treasure. Wow, with Iggy and the stooges huh? Awesome.

*Wow!* Frank Zappa... and, not only that, but Sleep Dirt! Wow again! Tim, you never cease to amaze me, that is a great record, I've had it almost since it came out. And yes, I have MANY Zappa albums, the ones featuring his guitar mostly, not the silly songs. George Duke is great! I have several of his, but not that one. Great Funky Jazz! His 'The Aura Will Prevail' is quite good too. If you like really excellent keyboard, Funky Jazz, look for the collaboration album Come Together with Jimmy McGriff and Groove Holmes, good stuff! If you like McCoy Tyner, I also like his later more progressive stuff kinda like what that one guy was saying. You should check out the Tone Poet Kevin Gray pressing of Expansions, excellent album! OMG! Tim... A huge *Super WOW* for Jane's Addiction!!! And here I thought you just sat around listening to Neil Young and Steely Dan... 😁 That is an *F'n GREAT* album, one of my all time favourites, I also have a 1st US pressing of that one. If you also like the Ritual De Habitual album by them (if I got the title right) if you can't find an original, get the RSD release of a few years ago, it sounds excellent!

Great trip report Tim! Some really nice finds - in particular the Joe Jackson, Tyner, Rollins and Jane's Addiction It was sad to hear about David Sanborn. While I wasn't a huge fan of his own releases his work as a session player/hired gun on other artist's albums was often phenomenal. I loved what he was doing on the Night Music show that he co-hosted in the late 80's. May he RIP...

Hey Tim, Glad to see you made it to the LA area. I live 5 minutes south of Poo-Bah Records. Did you run into Alex at Record Safari? He used to manage the Glass Door record shop out in Pomona. They have maybe 15 bins of new arrivals. Alex is a cool guy and looks like he does in the movie. Atomic is a great place. Some of these shops bring LPs to a monthly Pasadena College Flea Market/Record fair the 1st Sunday of every month. Last week I was record shopping in Santa Barbra at Warbler Records. Bought a couple of early Rolling Stones including the American pressing of Aftermath and my first 10-inch pressing by Michel Legrand/Paris a la Hi-Fi Thanks again for the vid and for returning to Glendale!

Have someone volunteer to drive is so nice. I didn’t realize how much of a drain LA driving is until I moved. Atomic Records is a great store. Atomic has too many unsorted boxes in the isles, its now taking over in a bad way They neeed to expand into the vacant space next door. Pooh bah has seen better days. No Rockaway in Silver lake? they are open ltd hrs but worth the trouble, just need to call ahead. The Record Parlour between Sunset and hollywood blvd sometimes surprises but $$ for no reason. Record Surplus on the West side is a usual stop for locals. Back in the day at the old location they were the store for film music, soundtracks and classical vinyl.
