Episode 9 of 50! These are the best sounding records in my collection. Permanent Waves is very much a transitional album in the Rush discography and history. It's one of the first Rush albums that I became aware of in my early teens and remains a very special album to me.
Pick up my brand new Steely Dan T-Shirt (Babylon Sisters) or maybe your own Valedictorian Pennant and help support the Channel!

Great info. Natural Science may very well be my favorite Rush song. I love this album. I have the Anthem versions of all my Rush collection. ( Being Canadian ) But I am still looking for a copy of the first album on Moon Records. I`ll find one eventually. Take care

Thanks for another great video! I listened to my copy last night. I think I got it in the $1 bin. It's got noise in the quiet parts but not so bad that I'm going to replace it. Great listen!

Hard to say I’ve disliked any albums from their first or second periods. Simply, well made, well thought out music.

Great video! I have this album in my collection, and I haven't listened to it in a while. You go into great detail, and I appreciate that.

Another good one. This on on an album by one of my fave if not THE favourite band of mine. I picked up my 1st press Anthem with 'Ray' copy at the local shop when it hit the stores. Never really got to appreciate the quality of sound on it until a couple years later when I upgraded the stereo. Still in great shape. Of course at the time, never paid attention to the dead wax. So great to know. Cheers . Brad.

Great and informative- I have 6 versions of this LP including the Canadian pressing - my favorite is still my MOFI copy of this - the bass response is super tight - IMO this and Moving Pictures where at the pinnacle of Pearts drumming and, as you mentioned, a crossover from the deep Prog work on the previous releases - if anyone comes across ANY OG pressing in good shape- don’t hesitate to buy - good stuff!

Another enjoyable video Tim, doesn't hurt that I'm a life long Rush fan, lol. Could talk all day about Rush, but thought you might be interested, Hugh Syme did all the Rush albums (or almost all, not sure about the first couple), anyway, he released a book, The Art of Rush. I don't have it, yet, pretty pricey, but it's on my want list. You may want to look into it if that is of interest to you. Looking forward to the next episode 👍

And yes, Hugh Syme did the art for almost every Rush Album , single, and poster.

Damn good album! If you want the best sound, get the 1st UK 'R.A.Y.E.S' pressing 👍 (EDIT: Oops, sorry, just got the part where you are talking about it 😁) As always, your history of it was most engrossing, thanks! I was able to trade away a rather 'lifeless' DCC pressing of Aqualung for a pristine UK R.A.Y.E.S pressing along with a lovely MFSL 2-LP pressing of Dead Can Dance: Into the Labyrinth, and another nice, clean 1st Jazz pressing. FWIW, on my system, the only RUSH remasters that I felt sounded a little better were Pressure/Grace (slight) and more so Presto (the original is a tad bright)

So I'm with you 100% on your idea about this album being a Pinnacle point in Rush's career.( I Know I will take a beating for not discussing 2112, Fly by night or Hemispheres all Excellent records) Freewill is one of the Best songs musically ever produced and this Album put them on a Trajectory that Produced some of the top Albums of the 80's and 90's. Of course this just one Obsessed Rush Fan's opinion and now way reflects the views of any other obsessed Rush fan...

I beg to differ!!! I must say I listen ti most all your videos, and in particular, the videos on mastering. In particular, I focus on mastering when buying. I was stunned that you just brushed aside DMM mastering in talking about Permanent Waves. All my Rush are DMM’s and I love them over the originals which I also have. Maybe my system is just superior! Besides. You know what they say about opinions!

An oversight but in my readings on various Hoffman threads, the Rays Cut beats the MoFi
