In a Dell survey of 1800 workers, irrational fears prevent people from doing their job well, with 68% acknowledging that they are afraid of making a mistake, being fired, or being found out that they are not good at their job. That is a significant amount of us that are living in fear and allowing it to be a barricade. That is why fear matters to our success - because rather than letting it hold us back, we can use it as a driver. Jacqueline Wales is the author of The Fearless Factor, The Fearless Factor @ Work, When The Crow Sings, a novel, and the creator of Transformational Strategies for Success, a comprehensive program designed to help executives enhance self-awareness, emotional intelligence and communication skills. She has explored human behavior and asked tough questions for more than 35 years. Jacqueline is a certified consultant for Human Synergistics behavioral assessments, the Global Leadership Wellness Survey, and The Immunity to Change program. Jacqueline also works with Australian Homeward Bound leadership program providing senior women in STEM with an opportunity to expand their leadership skills culminating in a journey to Antartica. She is a professionally trained singer, and global nomad who has lived and traveled on three continents, earned a black belt in karate, and is an active co-partner in a long-term marriage and mother of four children and three granddaughters. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Your story of trauma and fear, and your ability to reframe your thinking into a positive, forward-looking vision is truly inspiring Jacqueline. Your statement, "safety is not necessarily being out of danger" but instead is the "willingness to challenge yourself when you get the discomfort...because then you have an opportunity to grow" is such a powerful mantra. It's so important for us to remember that fear, change, challenge, resistance...they all equal growth when we work hard and don't let them break us down.

Jaqueline, what an amazing presentation! The reframe and approach to confronting/challenging our fears is enlightening and inspiring! Love the approach of understanding the fear at a deeper level (a mindset shift around the stories we tell ourselves and the importance of community), getting comfortable with being uncomfortable (channeling this to really unleash the power of fear to invite a more fulfilling life), and really embracing our vision and direction by leaning into the things that feel scary. They wouldn't feel scary if they weren't worth doing! This is going on my motivational playlist and I'm so stoked to have been connected with you! I look forward to continuing to learn from your journey, a journey that I resonate with on so many levels! Thank you for sharing your magic, Jaqueline!

As someone who's spent thirty years learning and teaching about emotions, this is an excellent message about fear. I always say if I'm going to teach about one emotion it would be fear because it's the one that keeps us from feeling everything else and doing what we long to do.

Very thought-provoking Jacqueline. With so few people truly self-aware, it makes me question whether I'm in the 15% or 85% collection. Perhaps it's actually on a scale - levels of awareness? Would be interesting to also evaluate the relationship between fear and risk tolerance. Excellent presentation. It definitely has me thinking!

Thank you for this thoughtful comment. The studies have shown that only a small percentage of people have taken the time to truly understand themselves. We all take big and small risks every day. The bigger the risk the more fear emotion seems to be present. It’s the uncertainty of outcome that worries most. I’m sure you have witnessed that in your own life.

I believe every entrepreneur is plagued at one time or another with the fear of not being good enough. I really like your re-framing around courage, not necessarily to slay the dragon all in one fell swoop. Start with one positive, courageous thought and action, then the next one, and so on… thus over time, you can achieve extraordinary accomplishments (while working with and through your fears). Great lessons on being brave and leveraging and owning your fears to catapult positive life changes… Take one courageous step after the next, as a journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step. Kudos!!!

Thank you @CoreyWengerSEO for sharing your thoughts on this. There is no doubt that moving beyond fear is the courage to take the next step and build incrementally until you have the confidence to take on bigger things. Not being good enough seems to be built into the DNA but it can be overcome if you are willing to do the hard work of eliminating the limiting beliefs.

A thought from the realm of neurochemistry: most (if not all) of our human personality difficulties stem from barriers in the brain, disrupting the full flow of information and feelings, put there to seal off something that another part of the brain judged to be "bad", and fears to confront. It's not just the big conscious fears (like "not good enough to do this job"), but all those small hidden ones that tie us down. "Fear is just a four letter word"... (with profuse apologies to Bob Dylan) - what a wonderful introduction! Thank you, Jacqueline, for all that you have meant to me since that first UPWARD Table of Eight.
@JacquelineWales
@JacquelineWales 5 ай бұрын
@jaynasheats4895 I am deeply grateful for our connection, and always appreciate your insights. The brain is the spark that drives the emotional response that leads to thoughts that leads to behavior and we are all led around by our reactions to those disruptive patterns that emerge. The big things get noticed while the small things are tolerated, hence the attention to them. Love and Fear are just four letter words (I'm singing the phrase as I write).with an enormous baggage train attached to them. 💗

This is a scary world. Balancing caution with risk reduction requires constant work. 67 years ago, I returned to my 5th grade classroom from lunch break to an unexpected sense of dread. Something pulled my soul out of my body and I watched the class bully swing a steel bar at my throat. I returned to my body, only after the teacher pried my hands from his throat. I told my agnostic mom that I don't know about God answering prayers, but we do survive when leave our bodies. We are a soul that wears a body. To support the message of Jacqueline, while the body may be damaged or destroyed, when the time comes to leave it behind there is no pain or fear any longer. Numerous stories on KZfaq tell us of what the other side is like, when some are sent back from death to finish their work in this world. God bless all of you precious souls.
