I like the themes of perfection in this a lot. It’s almost like a perfect human is a robot, and a perfect robot is a human.

For me the story of North no.2 was beautiful, it had me in tears. A truly beautiful episode.

The true genius of Naoki Urasawa, apart from his story writing, is not the flashy battles or animation style (though even that is done quite beautifully) but the way he addresses pretty deep and thought provoking subjects. There's a sort of a value to be had from going through this anime that lasts long after you've actually finished watching it.

This is probably in one of my top 3 or 4 anime next to FMAB, Trigun, and Vinland Saga. I grew up with Mega Man (which was heavily influenced by Astro Boy) and the 2009 Astro Boy film and seeing Astro Boy be effectively turned into a cross between Watchmen and Blade Runner has been incredible! One theme that I really love is how they explored how robots express empathy, especially with Uran. Like, they have that sense of empathy that we do, but they don't fully know how to process that feeling. I don't think I've seen a sci-fi series do that in at least a long time. I need to get the manga. Naoki Urasawa is a fucking genius. If you haven't seen it yet, I recommend watching Monster, which is based on another manga he wrote.

Watching Episode 1 and it's everything I ever dreamed of. The manga was incredible and I never thought I'd see the day it would be animated. And in spectacular form too.

Just like Monster, this Anime is very well made

I definitely did feel an advantage, having read the manga years ago. The anime unlocked some deep memories, so it was easy for me to catch up with the info dumps. This is definitely an incredible adaptation. And it did it’s job by making you want to go back and research more. Just like how years ago, the manga made me go back and rewatch the 2003 Astro Boy series

This anime series reminds me why I love the art form so much. It's so beautiful, powerful, and touching on so many relevant topics and levels. Like for instance how we should never become the thing we are trying to fight against. How everyone should have the same unalienable rights. The one point that hits home the most for me is the way that A.I. robots (even with rights) are depicted as protectors and servants to humanity. They are depicted in the same light as past and present emergency service personnel. The public views them as the heros that they are, but there service providers see them as an unexhostable service resorce and if damaged or malfunctioning are more easily tossed aside and easily forgotten. Few in the public stand with them in support, but they still stand tall as best they can, considering everything and fighting the good fight. But it's so relevant right now with everything that's going on. I am very very impressed with the characters and story line they have evolved and created here. Really brilliant piece of cinema. This deserves recognition and awards 👏.

It never showed Pluto killing humans in the anime and manga......SPOILER....... . . . . . . . IT WAS ABDULLAH, he was the perfect AI that didn't even know he was an AI. He killed the humans.

i knew nothing about astro boy going into this and wasn't sure what i expected aside from "cool robots?". i did not expect an emotional rollercoaster of a detective story, nor did I expect an anime adaptation of a manga from 20 years ago to sort of encapsulate the current mood of automation right now so well. i'm studying as a robotics engineer and am very wary of how people talk about robots, in terms of what sorts of things people accept or dislike about them in our lives, and this show captured a lot of what i see, though obviously not entirely analogous in their anime world. I think my basis of my understanding for the show comes from the line Dr Tenma repeats about the perfect artificial intelligence; My take on the story, just from what I understand, is that it's a story about what it means to be human, based on what it takes for robots to become human (spoilers ahead). The ability to feel hatred, sorrow, etc. are things we as humans have, and regardless of if any good necessarily comes from them, they are things we feel and overcome. The robots we see in the show are able to start feeling these things, but it isn't until near the end, when Atom is able to overcome his hatred, that we see he's finally able to fully cross the line. Brau, when he touches Atom, understands what a complete human heart is, as Atom is the first robot to be able to not only feel those powerful emotions, but overcome them in the moment. I think unfortunately people that watch this video , and people that have read the manga or already seen Pluto's design, will not necessarily get to experience how the show builds up that reveal, which is one of the things which kept me going throughout the story. I thought the first episode was probably the most impactful single episode, but the themes built upon and the mystery that unfolds around bora/pluto kept me just as engaged through the rest of the series. I would say that the scenes with thracia and the anti robot cult could probably have been changed to either be more a larger part of the story, explained a bit better, or just not included personally.

Atom was part of my introduction to anime back in the sixties when I was kid. And we get that amazing melding of Tezuka and Urasawa’s style. I finished it yesterday and can’t wait to start it again. I thought the last few episodes were all exceptional, as well as the first one. The way the story approached the nature of humanity was powerful and thought provoking. A powerful, thoughtful series, one which I will return to again hand again and again). Thanks for the review. It is a series that benefits from deep discussion and I think your review was a worthy discussion of a special series.

It feels inferior to Monster for a couple of reasons: 1. I dont get why you need "hatred" to wake up the worlds most advanced AI. Can someone clarify this? Why cant it be like something like extreme happiness so a super advanced good robot can be created? It feels like they chose hatred for no apparent reason at all than to advance the plot. How did Tenma come to the conclusion that it had to be hatred and then entirely contradicting himself by creating Atom? 2. The instigator of everything was the teddy bear but why was its origins never explained? That wouldve been better use of screen time. 3. The anime fails to establish a main theme and instead confusingly dips itself into many themes like politics, religion, cycle of hatred, AI & etc. resulting in an incohesive experience. Maybe my wording isnt exactly correct but you get the gist If monster was a 10 this was sadly a 6. Its a 10 animation wise tho.

Pluto is fucking incredible. It’s an absolute masterpiece. It’s one of the best animes I have ever seen. I dare say it’s the same level of quality as Attack on Titan and JoJos Bizarre Adventure, and I hold both series in very high regard.

I finished watching it and it is an amazing anime. The story and anime wow. I need to read the manga which is based on. It uses characters from the original creator Osamu Tezuka. Just like it how the Astro boy character is given the original Japanese name Atom.

Pluto is a series I got the physical copies as a xmas present around 2015ish. While I enjoyed the read back then, being in my mid 20's then and a rushing reader, I didn't take the time to really appreciate what the series does. Meanwhile, I just finished watching episode 1, and I was bawling the last couple of minutes with North Nr2 and Sir Duncan ... just thinking about it I get teary eyed again. Will pace myself with 1 episode a day but man do I want to kick my past self for not ligering more on the pages.

What an amazing anime with full emotional scene i have cried multiple times ..

Wasn’t an astroy boy fan, but Atom fan and this is ridiculous fantastic.

This series is really haunting, and sticks with you for a long time after you’ve finished it. Still thought provoking for something published nearly 20 years ago. My favorite character is Atom, and honestly his backstory and arc is really heartbreaking if you think about it. Poor kid had to go through so much, first being abandoned by his dad after he didn’t meet his expectations of being a “perfect” son like Tobio was. Then, he has to go through hell finding out about how bleak the world is around him, finding out he’s a robot, and then finding out that he is supposed to save the world…geez, no kid should ever have to go through that, robot or not. Thing is, I wish that they had actually when they did the dub (excellent though it is) did actual regional accents for the characters, or had people of the actual nationalities depicted voicing them. Their backgrounds are supposed to be part of the arc. I always wanted for Epsilon to have an Australian accent, Gesicht having a German accent, North No. 2 having a Scottish accent, Mont Blanc having a Swiss accent, Atom and Uran having (subtle but still noticeable) Japanese accents, Brando having a Turkish accent, Hercules being Greek, et cetera.

Struggling to keep up with Pluto is a Urasawa manga thing, not really many other manga or anime has such crazy interconnected web of stories. His stories are a work of art. Please check out Monster and his other mangas.

When I saw the trailer, I immediately realized it was a Naoki Urasawa series because no other mangaka draws noses quite like he does

This show was a masterpiece

was really pleasantly surprised. Felt a lot to me like those old school anime/series whereas you're pretty much on the edge of your seat all the time, just waiting to uncover all of the world's mysteries, one right after the other. Characters were also very well developed and layer, even thought most of them being robots; and dialogue was great except for maybe 1% being a little bit of awkward scenes/exchanges. A solid 8.5/10 for me, with most of the issues I had with it being the direction and overall cinematography. Both the art-style (very old-school similar to Monster, which is great to me) and animation where veeery competent, and honestly a lot more than I was expecting, altho they're often marred by the simply uninteresting camera work, shots (especially during ordinary dialogue scenes), and weird choice of where to put the highest animation budget on, I guess: for example, I constantly saw extremely (technically) impressive and fully animated crowd scenes, just so right after I had to endure a 5min long slide show of 2 characters talking to each other (and a lot of the times about pretty important subjects). Action scenes were always pretty good tho, but the in-between moments def could have used a lot more of overall creativity... Maybe I'm spoiled by modern anime, but I can't help but to notice how bland lots of the scenes felt like - be it due to editing, camera work, transitions, and more.

I was ecstatic when I learned Pluto was getting an anime adaptation. Pluto is my favorite Naoki Urasawa work. I loved its characters and the humanity they showed good and bad. I hope more of his works can adapted as an anime cause he has so many beautiful works that should be shown, I would kill for a Billy bat anime.

I think Gesichts revelation is my highlight and the whole thing around the laws of robotics. There is something so primal and beautiful about his reaction to the events.

i loved the story and themes of Pluto and will definitely need to give it a rewatch as i was left confused by a few things but maybe someone here can give me answers. like, did they ever reveal what the policebot saw jump from the building or did i just miss it? and why did Ali kill Gesicht? if he was controlled by Abullah/ Pluto then why didn't they give him horns after killing him? Also what was with the teddy bear?? I don't remember them ever giving it a proper introduction, it just kinda showed up.

When I first watched this series I was confused how Pluto became mentally and emotionally stable after fighting and talking with Astro Boy. He decided to became a hero and save humanity, but I was not able to understand what caused the change. Maybe if I watch this again I would be able to understand.

I went into this show totally blind. I was so delighted with it. Very dascinating show.

There are 2 things I didn't enjoy about the anime 1) the fact that they kept bringing up hate. I get that that's the theme of the show, but the word be more dull the more they use that word, like it gets watered down. 2) The reveal of the motive aka the reveal of the mystery. I felt like the war/revenge plot wasn't that interesting as well as the villain being pretty one dimensional and uninteresting, which made the reveal of him being the perfect robot pretty lame. They didn't do anything with the perfect robot after the reveal even when they, for the lack of a better word, kept hyping it up.

Its very beautiful to look at however the story was a drag… couldn’t finished it because it goes nowhere

I really enjoyed the first few episodes, but then it started to get really repetitive and suffered a lot of pacing issues. I feel like it would have been much better if it was cut down to 5 or 6 episodes.

Im glad you talked about the peak that is ep 1, it totally lured me in like you said and the rest was, well, great, but not on THAT level. It had me in stitches and I sort of got digimon vibes from it, like the robot had the proportions of Angemon and he was gentle and kind, and then at the end turned into a war machine, man I still get the chills.

I do agree that north number two is a very good introduction but to say it is the best part of the anime? I don't it feels a bit too predictable and say slightly too much at times for me. (Just to say for people that fear that the anime peaks early is a pretty subjective take.)

You know what was crazy to me and I didn't get till the end? Gesicht is actually not one of Temna's "perfect" robots with imbued emotions, he just delevoped the emotion hate all by himself just by seeing his "daugther" dead. It's the same thing for the first robot that killed a human, nothing is wrong with his AI because he developed REAL feelings himself, essentially meaning a robot doesn't need an especially developed AI with imbued feelings, like Temna thought. They have feelings, just by existing and they will develope strong emotions just like humans even if we don't want them to. If there is a real Artifical Intelligence it will have feelings.

I'm sorry, the Netflix trailers were misleading. I was expecting something so different. Kind of wish I would've watched this KZfaq clip first.

Wow this review basically took the words right out of mu mouth. The only downside to this anime is trying to keep up with the plat, but man, it is a masterpiece. I couldnt stop watching. The North No. 2 story was my favorite part aswell. His death actually hit me.

Better question. Say we finally achieve such levels of AI where it truly just IS pretty much sentient life. Say we achieve that... and it IS better at living up to our own creed than we are. Are we-- being us-- prepared to peacefully allow them to?

The dialogue in the final episode was as subtle as a hammer. "Hatred only gives birth to more hatred. Hatred is bad. Do not hate. Can we ever end hatred?" I'd be curious to see a word count stat on the number of times the words "hate" or "hatred" are used in that episode. I still REALLY liked the series. But the final episode was the weakest one of the 8 for me. ****SPOILER TALK BELOW***** ***** ***** I also still want to know what happened to the anti-Robot hate group. That felt like an important story, and I was invested in seeing how it would wrap up, but it was suddenly dropped after Gesicht saved Adolf. I really wanted to see that story end with some justice.

Great anime, timeless topics with a good twist. I have a question. 1. Why are the fight scenes so subdued? Also, an observation. The tension between the protagonists who keep fighting 1v1 and Pluto felt frustrating with so many other realistic human motifs. Epsilon cares more about not killing Pluto than being with his orphans?

I understand that the fact that there are many protagonists, important secondary characters and jumps from country to country can be a bit annoying or complex to follow, but it is not the "fault" of the anime, it is the style of the creator, Naoki Urasawa. If you read other of his works like Monster or 20th Century Boys, there are always several protagonists, many important characters, sudden changes of locations and time jumps as well.

The anime is so good. I watched it with friends and I cried a few times. I do agree thag the beginning was really good. North No2 was such a good character and cried when he was singing in the sky. He never wanted to return to the battlefield. Gesicht is such a fantastic character and I would argue he was the most human out of the seven. He felt loved, sadness, happiness, wonder, anger, hatred, and learned how to move on from hatred. He was a wonderfully written character

For me the anime felt so strong, my partner and I just watched it in a couple of sittings and to us we didn't like the last episode all too much but the themes the show presented were done so well and very well written. The story of North no. 2 was one of the strongest stories in the series IMO and made me really feel for the characters.

I'm honest. A robots' sense of value is only within the range of the value of the human who programmed it. Because robots genuinely realize these values, they have more human-like worries than humans, which is heartbreaking. And eight robots try to solve it. There could be a contradiction in the programmed ideals of humanity itself. Atom completes the basic design of a weapon that would lead to the extinction of hummus, but he tries to protect human. Atom loves Temma but Temma thinks Tobio. I believe it vane true ta ar Tobio loved his father, Dr. Temma. I don't know, though.

The message in the finale about hatred not solvable with more hatred just broke me, considering the world events going on at the moment. Also I kept switching between audio tracks to match the languages the characters would have spoken (German for the Gesicht scenes, Japanese for the Atom/Uran scenes and English otherwise), and it elevated the immersion that much more. I urge you to give it a try, especially with the German dub which I thought was done very well!

This series was absolutely fantastic! I've never cared about Astroboy, so there was no attachment or anticipation for this release. But after giving episode 1 a watch out of curiosity, I was hooked. One day of binge watching later, and I was absolutely thrilled with the result! Easily one of the best anime series I've watched this year, and will be an easy recommendation to people going forward.

10/10 anime gave monster vibes / full metal vibes with war

This show had a lot of parts I liked. But holy hell there was so much about it that just pissed me off while watching, and overall I very much disliked it.

This is how I think the future will be for robots, watching PLUTO. Because after seeing this anime robots in the future will have rights and emotions.

As a Megaman fan I would definitely going to watch this show because the main character reminds me of battle network protagonist except hes not excited boy.

I love crime dramas, but i'm honestly bored of the same cases and killers. I'm glad media like this exist, to bring me back to them. It feels so fresh.

The writing is genius that first episode was a packed punch and the rest was really good buy for me I am confused a little bit I felt that the series needed more oomph and it was too subtle on the other hand I think that the series gave tha main characters a proper storyline that was perfect in every way and I think that the story was too futuristic for us to comprehend it fully and that in the present day we can’t grasp the full concept this story presents

I'm coming into this pretty blind, without hearing the usual buzz I also didn't have too high expectations. But so far I'm on episode 3 and I don't think I am imagining the depth and nuanced intrigue that seems to exude from this show. I'm a computer engineer myself, and I'm sorry but at least with a standard binary Turing machine I don't think any amount of complexity (or even the ability to pass a "Turing Test") will achieve actual consciousness. But if I suspend that idea and instead just assume that these robots are truly conscious (perhaps they are based on a quantum computing neural net akin to something like microtubules) then I can go on to enjoy this show on its level. Given that they have dreams I think this is by design.

I typically should be turned off by a robot themed anime series but Pluto is so damn good. I was hooked, almost like I was watching a movie. This is gonna be a hidden gem in years to come

For anybody who loves this anime: watch Monster. Pluto is like Monster on crack. If you enjoy the slow burn AT ALL Monster is so...hard hitting. I cannot recommend it enough

I just watched this series on netflix and loved it. The one thing that did irk me quite allot though was the galactic impotence of authorities in responding whith known targets of assassination by extremely powerful forces are at your disposal to lay traps, but no, are just left to wander about the place getting knocked off one after the other.... where are all the tanks and jets and battleships? Oh no, just one or 2 mall cops is the response.... how insulting to my intelligence that was. These countries invade 'Persia' over a rumor of robots of mass destruction, but when you got a real one going around killing powerful robots, your barely interested??? Not one single tank, not one single jet fighter, It just makes no F-ing sense, sorry.

This series gave me Bladerunner vibe with a dash of Silence of the Lambs. Would I be wrong to even consider it as noir?
